Your Kindness Is Costing OpenAI Millions — But They’re Okay With That

Every 'please' and 'thank you' adds up in the AI economy
Those extra "please" and "thank you" messages you're sending to ChatGPT aren't just good manners — they're costing OpenAI real money, according to CEO Sam Altman.
What began as a casual observation on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked an interesting discussion about the hidden costs of politeness in our interactions with AI systems. A user posed the question: "I wonder how much money OpenAI has lost in electricity costs from people saying 'please' and 'thank you' to their models."
Altman, known for his active engagement on social media, responded with a surprisingly specific estimate: "tens of millions of dollars well spent — you never know." While his tone suggested a degree of hyperbole, the response raises legitimate questions about the resource implications of how we communicate with AI systems.
The economics of AI politeness
Every word typed into systems like ChatGPT requires computational resources. Each token (roughly corresponding to a word or part of a word) processed by these large language models consumes electricity, contributes to hardware wear, and ultimately translates to operational costs.
Given ChatGPT's massive user base — reported to exceed 200 million monthly active users as of early 2025 — even small inefficiencies can scale to significant expenses. If millions of users routinely add pleasantries to their prompts, the cumulative effect becomes substantial.
Is politeness to AI wasted effort?
Technical considerations aside, there's the question of whether being polite to AI represents misplaced anthropomorphism. After all, these systems don't have feelings to hurt or egos to bruise. From a purely utilitarian perspective, additional words that don't contribute to the functional request could be considered wasteful.
However, Kurt Beavers, a director on Microsoft Copilot's design team, offers a more nuanced perspective: "Using polite language sets a tone for the response," he explains. When an AI model "clocks politeness, it's more likely to be polite back."
The psychology of human-AI interaction
Our tendency toward politeness with AI systems may reflect deeper psychological patterns. Research in human-computer interaction suggests that people naturally apply social norms to their interactions with technology, particularly when that technology displays human-like characteristics.
Dr. Clifford Nass, a pioneering Stanford researcher in this field, demonstrated through numerous experiments that humans instinctively treat computers as social actors. We feel complimented when computers praise us, annoyed when they interrupt us, and yes — inclined to show courtesy even when logically unnecessary.
A balance of efficiency and etiquette
As AI systems become more integrated into daily life, users face an interesting trade-off between communication efficiency and habitual courtesy. Those concerned with energy consumption and environmental impact might choose to streamline their prompts, while others may prefer maintaining polite conventions regardless of the recipient's nature.
Some AI companies have begun addressing this tension by developing systems that can identify and filter social niceties without processing them as substantive content, potentially reducing computational overhead while allowing users to maintain their preferred communication style.
The bigger picture
While the cost of politeness might seem like a trivial concern, it reflects broader questions about the economics and ethics of AI deployment at scale. As these systems consume increasing amounts of global computing resources, even small inefficiencies become meaningful.
For now, Altman's "well spent" comment suggests OpenAI values the quality of human-AI interaction over minor cost savings. Whether future iterations of these systems will be designed to process politeness more efficiently remains to be seen.
⚡ The companies of the future
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan overhauls leadership, elevates AI focus with strategic shakeup

Intel CEO Leadership Restructure
Intel's new CEO Lip-Bu Tan is restructuring the company's leadership and placing key chipmaking divisions under his direct oversight just one month after taking the helm.
The reorganization includes promoting Sachin Katti to Chief Technology and AI Officer, responsible for the company's AI roadmap, Intel Labs, and startup engagement. Both the data center/AI chip group and personal computing chip division will now report directly to Tan, eliminating a management layer.
The changes aim to combat what Tan described as "organizational complexity and bureaucratic processes" that have hindered innovation. This overhaul comes as Intel struggles with manufacturing setbacks and increased competition in AI chips, where Nvidia has established dominance.
Why it matters: With a streamlined structure and renewed focus on AI, Tan is betting on bold leadership to reclaim Intel’s relevance in a fast-moving semiconductor race.

⚡ Trends for the Future
Motorola Picks Perplexity AI as Default Assistant, Samsung Could Be Next

Perplexity may replace Gemini on future Motorola and Samsung devices
The details:
Perplexity AI may soon replace Google's Gemini as the default AI assistant on Motorola and potentially Samsung smartphones, according to a recent Bloomberg report. Perplexity has reportedly already reached an agreement with Motorola to integrate its AI assistant, while discussions with Samsung are still ongoing.
Motorola is expected to announce the partnership at its April 24 event in New York, alongside the launch of the Moto Razr 60 and Razr 60 Ultra. These new devices are likely to debut with Perplexity AI built in.
Samsung, which invested in Perplexity through its venture arm in 2024, is also exploring deeper integration. Potential outcomes include setting Perplexity as the default assistant, pre-installing the app, or boosting visibility through the Galaxy Store.
This shift could impact Samsung's current AI partnership with Google, especially with the Galaxy S25 Edge rumored to launch in May. It also signals rising competition in the AI assistant space, as Perplexity aims to rival ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini.
What makes this crucial: If Perplexity secures a place as the go-to assistant on major smartphone brands, it could challenge Big Tech's grip on mobile AI—and redefine what users expect from their digital helpers.
