Yope raises $12.3M to build a private social network without algorithms or ads

As mainstream social media platforms increasingly prioritize entertainment and advertising over genuine connection, a London-based startup called Yope is taking a different path. The company has raised $12.3 million in a funding round led by Northzone — the same firm that backed Spotify and Klarna — to build a social network with no algorithms, no ads, and no public content.

At the heart of Yope's platform is the concept of "micro communities" — small, private groups where friends and family can share photos, videos, and messages without the pressure of performing for a public audience. All accounts are private by default, there is no algorithmic feed, and the app is not funded by advertising. Instead, Yope plans to generate revenue through a premium subscription model aimed at its most engaged users.

Co-founder and CEO Bahram Ismailau says the idea emerged from an extensive research effort. Using AI tools, the team conducted over 100,000 interviews to understand how young people actually use social media. What they found was telling: around 30% of young users rely on private "photo dump" or "spam" accounts to share candid moments with a close circle, while many others avoid posting publicly altogether. "Young people don't have any place to self-express if they are not ready to be an influencer," Ismailau said. "We found a big opportunity to create a new space for them to be social."

The app has a distinctly personal feel. Users build profiles by uploading photos, which can be transformed into cut-out stickers and displayed in a collage-style arrangement on a personal "wall." The experience is reminiscent of early Myspace, where users customised their own corner of the internet. Upcoming features will let users add favorite music, interests, and custom colors or wallpapers. Yope also offers in-app messaging, AI-generated recaps of top moments, and lock screen widgets that display friends' photos.

AI plays a supporting role throughout the app, though Ismailau is careful to distinguish how: the team does not use AI to generate content, but rather to strengthen real-world connections. That includes AI-powered mini-games that friends can play together — launching in approximately one month — as well as tools to help users coordinate meetups, such as finding nearby restaurants or events.

The numbers suggest the approach is resonating. Yope now has nearly 15 million registered users, who collectively share between 10 million and 20 million pieces of content every week. More than 50% of active users open the app at least five days a week, signaling strong habitual use. Notably, around 20% of active users have invited an older family member to join them, suggesting the app's appeal extends beyond teenagers.

Those usage metrics were enough to attract investor attention without Yope having to pitch. Northzone approached the company directly. "Yope is a fresh, empowering, and safe take on social media where users are in full control of their experience, in contrast to the predatory practices of Meta, TikTok, or X," said Northzone partner Pär-Jörgen Pärson. Additional investors in the round include Inovo, Redseed, and Geek Ventures, bringing Yope's total funding to $20 million.

The fresh capital will be used to expand the team — currently around 35 people — develop new product features, and open a US office. Yope is available as a free download on both iOS and Android.

White House science advisor Michael Kratsios accused Chinese AI company Moonshot of building Kimi K3 by distilling Anthropic's Fable model and using banned export chips. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed the claims, citing watermarks of U.S. models found in Chinese AI systems. Moonshot did not comment on its training methods.

However, AI researchers are skeptical. Fable only became publicly available on July 1st, leaving no realistic time to distill enough data, train, and release a model of Kimi K3's caliber within two weeks. Experts also note that distillation grows less effective as models advance and training shifts toward reinforcement learning.

Researchers emphasize that Moonshot employs highly capable engineers and isn't simply copying Western AI. Distillation is also common industry-wide — Elon Musk admitted SpaceXAI distilled OpenAI models to build Grok. Separately, concerns remain about Moonshot accessing banned Nvidia chips through black markets and overseas servers.

Lunar Outpost is putting Nvidia Jetson chips on its next moon rover.

Nvidia's push to deploy its chips across every corner of the tech world has reached a new frontier: the moon. Lunar Outpost, a startup developing robotics for space infrastructure, announced that its next lunar rover will use Nvidia's Jetson chips to control its lidar system — making it likely the first GPU ever to operate on the lunar surface.

The Jetson platform is designed to be compact and power-efficient, allowing robotic systems to process sensor data locally and react to their environment in real time. Lunar Outpost CEO Justin Cyrus explained that the company's autonomy stack has evolved significantly, blending traditional deterministic models with physical AI. "We still run both in parallel, and then it's our job to figure out where physical AI can actually plug into our stack and help us do things that no one's done before," he said.

Operating GPUs on the moon presents serious challenges. Unlike satellites in low Earth orbit, lunar hardware must endure intense cosmic radiation and extreme temperature swings across the lunar day-night cycle — all while running on very limited power. Lunar Outpost's engineers believe that if they can crack these conditions, their rovers will be far more capable of independent decision-making, a critical requirement as NASA works toward a sustained human presence on the moon, potentially by 2028.

Lunar Outpost's upcoming rover is packaged aboard an Intuitive Machines lander and is set to launch on a Falcon 9 rocket before the end of the year. A follow-on mission will investigate Reiner Gamma, a region of the lunar surface where a mysterious magnetic anomaly has long puzzled scientists. Nvidia has also separately partnered with Firefly Aerospace — the first private company to land a robot on the moon — to run Jetson chips on a lunar-orbiting satellite that will map the surface and track the growing number of robots operating there.

Looking further ahead, Lunar Outpost's larger crewed rover, Pegasus, is intended to carry astronauts to the moon and is waiting on Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket, which suffered an anomaly this summer. Cyrus remains cautiously optimistic that the 2028 timeline remains intact, describing a future where autonomous robotic workforces — powered by physical AI — lay the groundwork for permanent human habitation beyond Earth.
