xAI plans 88-acre solar farm near Memphis data center

Musk's xAI to build small solar farm adjacent to Colossus data center

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has announced plans to construct a solar farm next to its massive Colossus data center in Memphis, according to presentations made to local city and county planners last week.

The proposed solar installation will span 88 acres on the western and southern sides of the data center, utilizing portions of a 136-acre vacant lot owned by the same developer that controls the Colossus property. Industry experts estimate the solar farm will generate approximately 30 megawatts of electricity, which represents only 10% of the data center's total power requirements.

The announcement comes amid mounting criticism over xAI's environmental practices at the facility. The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), partnering with the NAACP, has accused the company of operating more than 400 megawatts of natural gas turbines without proper permits. According to SELC, at least 35 turbines are capable of releasing over 2,000 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOX) pollution annually, contributing to smog formation and respiratory health issues.

The environmental concerns have particularly affected residents of nearby Boxtown, a predominantly Black community. University of Tennessee, Knoxville researchers documented a striking 79% increase in peak nitrogen dioxide concentration levels in areas surrounding the data center following xAI's commencement of operations. Community activists have reported a surge in asthma attacks and other respiratory problems since the facility became operational.

While xAI maintains that the gas turbines are a temporary solution until additional power sources become available, local officials have granted the company permits to operate 15 turbines through January 2027. The company previously stated its intention to transition away from fossil fuel dependency once alternative energy infrastructure is established.

This latest 88-acre solar project builds upon xAI's earlier renewable energy commitments. In September, the company announced plans for a much larger 100-megawatt solar farm in the area, which will be coupled with 100 megawatts of grid-scale battery storage to provide continuous 24/7 electricity supply.

The September project has secured significant federal backing through Seven States Power Corporation, the solar farm's developer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded the company $439 million, including a substantial $414 million interest-free loan. This federal support is particularly noteworthy given the current administration's cancellation of numerous clean energy grants and loans through the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy.

Meanwhile, xAI continues expanding its fossil fuel infrastructure elsewhere. The company has installed additional gas turbines in Mississippi to power its second data center, Colossus 2. Currently, 59 turbines are operational at the Mississippi site, with xAI classifying 18 as "temporary" installations—a designation that exempts them from pollution tracking requirements by regulatory agencies.

The Colossus data center represents one of the world's largest AI model training facilities, requiring enormous amounts of electricity to power the computational infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence development. The proposed solar farm, while a step toward renewable energy, highlights the massive power demands of AI infrastructure and the challenges companies face in balancing rapid expansion with environmental responsibility.

As xAI moves forward with its renewable energy plans, community advocates continue pressing for stronger environmental oversight and faster transition away from pollution-generating gas turbines that disproportionately impact neighboring communities.

⚡ Trends for the Future

Are you balding? There's an AI for that

AI startup helps diagnose hair loss through photo analysis.

A routine haircut two years ago sparked the idea for Cyriac Lefort's latest startup, MyHair AI. When his New York hairdresser told the 32-year-old French entrepreneur he was "starting to lose a bit of hair," Lefort immediately bought the suggested shampoo, despite not believing he was actually balding. A later visit to a hair doctor confirmed he wasn't.

This experience revealed to Lefort how easily people could be manipulated around the emotional topic of hair loss. He discovered the $50 billion hair loss industry was plagued with misinformation and unverified clinic reviews, inspiring him to create a solution using artificial intelligence.

Partnering with 28-year-old Tilen Babnik, Lefort developed MyHair AI, which launched this summer after just a year of development. The app works by analyzing user-uploaded photos of their scalp to measure hair density and detect early signs of hair loss. Over time, the AI tracks hair loss progression and helps users build personalized protection routines.

The platform also connects users with verified specialists and clinics, providing transparency in an industry known for questionable practices. "Our AI tells you what's really happening with your hair, matches you with products that actually make sense for your hair type, and explains the science behind them, including possible side effects," Lefort explained.

The duo "vibe coded" the initial prototype in just a few weeks using Cursor, demonstrating how quickly startups can build today. MyHair AI has already attracted over 1,000 paying subscribers and 200,000 user accounts, analyzing more than 300,000 scalp photos.

Unlike competitors such as Hims, MyHair AI built a dedicated AI model specifically trained on hair images rather than using generic language models. The company recently added renowned dermatologist Dr. Tess to its board and is expanding through clinic partnerships and a booking platform.

"Men worry about two things in their health, sexual dysfunction and hair loss," Lefort noted. "We address one of the biggest day-to-day concerns."
