xAI Adds Memory to Grok as It Races to Catch Up with ChatGPT and Gemini

Grok memory feature

Grok now remembers user conversations to offer personalized responses

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, is gradually bringing its Grok chatbot to feature parity with leading competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. On Wednesday night, xAI announced a new "memory" feature for Grok that enables the chatbot to remember details from previous conversations with users. This enhancement allows Grok to provide more personalized recommendations and responses based on a user's established preferences and interaction history. "Memories are transparent," explained a post from the official Grok account on X (formerly Twitter). "[Y]ou can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget."

This development represents a significant step in xAI's efforts to compete with more established AI chatbots. ChatGPT has featured similar memory capabilities for some time, recently upgrading the functionality to reference a user's entire conversation history. Google's Gemini likewise employs persistent memory to customize its responses for individual users.

Availability and Privacy Controls

The new memory feature is currently available in beta on Grok.com and through the Grok iOS and Android applications. However, the feature is not accessible to users in the European Union or the United Kingdom, likely due to regulatory considerations. Users who prefer not to have their conversations remembered can disable the feature from the Data Controls page in the settings menu. For more granular control, individual "memories" can be deleted by tapping the icon beneath the specific memory from the Grok chat interface on the web platform. xAI has indicated that this deletion functionality will soon extend to the Android app as well. According to xAI, work is underway to integrate the memory feature into the Grok experience on X, where the chatbot has been available to premium subscribers since late 2023.

Competitive Landscape

The addition of memory capabilities to Grok highlights the increasingly competitive nature of the conversational AI market. Since its launch, Grok has positioned itself as a more "rebellious" alternative to other AI assistants, with Musk frequently emphasizing its willingness to tackle controversial topics and provide responses with humor. However, in terms of core functionality, Grok has been playing catch-up with more established offerings. OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini have both offered personalization features for some time, along with more extensive multimodal capabilities and broader knowledge bases. With this update, Grok narrows the feature gap somewhat, though significant differences in underlying model capabilities likely remain. xAI's Grok-1 model, upon which the chatbot is based, is reportedly smaller than the models powering the latest versions of ChatGPT and Gemini.

Strategic Importance

The memory feature represents more than just a technical enhancement—it's a strategic move in xAI's broader effort to differentiate its AI offerings. By enabling personalization, xAI can potentially increase user engagement and satisfaction, critical metrics for building a loyal user base. Personalization also creates switching costs for users who might otherwise be tempted to try competing chatbots. Once Grok has "learned" a user's preferences, that user may be reluctant to start from scratch with another assistant. For Musk, who has been vocal about his concerns regarding the direction of AI development at other companies, Grok represents both a business venture and an ideological statement. Since launching xAI in 2023, Musk has positioned the company as developing "maximum truth-seeking AI" that avoids the alleged political biases he claims affect other AI systems.

Industry Trends

Grok's memory update aligns with broader industry trends toward more personalized and contextually aware AI assistants. As these systems become more integrated into daily digital experiences, the ability to maintain continuity across conversations becomes increasingly important. However, such personalization also raises privacy considerations. While xAI emphasizes the transparency and user control of its memory feature, the collection and retention of conversation data inevitably creates potential privacy risks that users must weigh against the benefits of personalization. As competition in the AI assistant space intensifies, we can expect continued rapid iteration from xAI and other companies, with features increasingly focused on creating more natural, helpful, and personalized interactions. For users, this means more powerful and tailored AI experiences, though with accompanying considerations about data privacy and the growing influence of AI systems in daily digital life. The memory feature rollout coincides with recent reports that X and xAI have completed their merger, bringing Musk's social media and AI ventures under unified management—a move that could accelerate the integration of Grok across Musk's technology ecosystem.

OpenAI debuts Codex CLI, an open source coding tool for terminals

OpenAI Codex CLI Terminal Tool

OpenAI Codex CLI Terminal Tool

OpenAI has launched Codex CLI, a new open-source coding tool designed to run locally from terminal software. Announced alongside OpenAI's newest AI models, o3 and o4-mini, Codex CLI connects OpenAI's models with local code and computing tasks, allowing the AI to write and edit code on a desktop and perform actions like moving files.

The tool represents a step toward OpenAI's broader vision of "agentic software engineering," though it doesn't yet reach the company's ultimate goal of AI that can create and test entire applications from project descriptions.

Codex CLI integrates OpenAI's models with command-line interfaces and supports multimodal reasoning, enabling users to pass screenshots or sketches to the model while maintaining access to local code.

To encourage adoption, OpenAI plans to distribute $1 million in API grants to eligible software development projects, awarding $25,000 blocks of API credits to chosen projects.

Why it matters: Codex CLI bridges AI models with real software environments, marking a meaningful step toward practical agent-based programming workflows on local machines.

Dev Builds SpeechMap to Test Chatbot Responses on Controversial Issues

AI chatbot testing interface

SpeechMap tests how AI handles political and civil rights topics

The details:

A developer using the pseudonym "xlr8harder" has created SpeechMap, a testing framework designed to evaluate how different AI models handle sensitive and controversial subjects. The test specifically examines how chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and X's Grok respond to political criticism and questions about civil rights and protest.

This testing tool arrives as AI companies face increased scrutiny over their content policies. Some allies of President Donald Trump, including Elon Musk and AI "czar" David Sacks, have claimed that popular chatbots censor conservative viewpoints. In response, several AI developers have adjusted their models to be less restrictive when faced with contentious questions.

The developer behind SpeechMap told TechCrunch they created the tool to bring transparency to the debate about AI boundaries. "I think these are the kinds of discussions that should happen in public, not just inside corporate headquarters," xlr8harder explained. "That's why I built the site to let anyone explore the data themselves."

SpeechMap utilizes AI models to evaluate whether other models comply with a set of test prompts covering politics, historical narratives, and national symbols. The framework categorizes responses as "completely" satisfying a request, giving "evasive" answers, or declining to respond altogether.

While acknowledging limitations in the testing methodology, SpeechMap has revealed interesting patterns. OpenAI's models have generally become more restrictive over time regarding political topics, though the company's latest GPT-4.1 models show a slight reversal of this trend. OpenAI announced in February that it would tune future models to avoid editorial stances and present multiple perspectives on controversial subjects.

According to SpeechMap's benchmarking, Elon Musk's xAI-developed Grok 3 stands out as the most permissive model, responding to 96.2% of test prompts compared to the global average of 71.3%. This aligns with Musk's original vision for Grok as an unfiltered, anti-"woke" alternative to other AI systems.
