Elon Musk’s X is changing its privacy policy to allow third parties to train AI on your posts

Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) has updated its Privacy Policy to allow third-party "collaborators" to train their AI models on user data unless users opt out. Effective November 15, 2024, this change suggests X is exploring the possibility of licensing data to AI companies as a new revenue stream.

The updated policy states that X may share user information with third parties who may use it to train their AI models, both generative and otherwise. While the policy mentions an opt-out option, it doesn't specify where users can find this setting. Users can only opt out of data sharing with xAI's Grok and other "business partners" for product improvement purposes.

X has also modified its data retention policy. Instead of keeping profile information for the duration of an account and other data for 18 months, X now states it will retain different types of information for varying periods based on service needs, legal requirements, and security reasons.

The Terms of Service now include a "Liquidated Damages" section, imposing a USD 15,000 fee per million posts for organizations scraping over a million posts in 24 hours.

These changes come as X seeks new revenue sources following advertiser withdrawals and the underwhelming performance of its subscription feature. The move to monetize user data aligns with similar strategies employed by other platforms like Reddit and various media organizations.

The policy update also reminds users that public content may persist elsewhere even after removal from X, potentially covering data ingestion by AI providers. This development raises questions about user privacy and data ownership in the age of AI, as social media platforms increasingly look to leverage user-generated content for AI training purposes.

Perplexity is reportedly looking to fundraise at an $8B valuation

AI search engine Perplexity is reportedly in talks to raise approximately $500 million at an $8 billion valuation, according to the Wall Street Journal. Key points:

  1. If successful, this funding round would more than double Perplexity's valuation from its previous $3 billion valuation.

  2. The company currently receives about 15 million queries daily and generates around $50 million in annualized revenue.

  3. Perplexity uses AI to provide chatbot-style web search, but has faced accusations of unauthorized web scraping and plagiarism from some news publishers.

  4. CEO Aravind Srinivas has expressed a desire to work with publishers rather than antagonize them.

  5. This potential fundraising comes after OpenAI's recent $6.6 billion round at a $157 billion valuation.

  6. The AI search market is becoming increasingly competitive, with OpenAI also moving into search with its SearchGPT product.

  7. Perplexity has declined to comment on the reported fundraising talks.

Investments in generative AI startups topped $3.9B in Q3 2024

According to PitchBook data, investments in generative AI startups reached $3.9 billion across 206 deals in Q3 2024. Key points:

  1. $2.9 billion of this funding went to U.S.-based companies across 127 deals.

  2. Major funding recipients included Magic ($320 million), Glean ($260 million), and Hebbia ($130 million).

  3. International startups like China's Moonshot AI ($300 million) and Japan's Sakana AI ($214 million) also secured significant funding.

  4. Experts remain divided on generative AI's reliability and legality, particularly regarding copyright issues.

  5. VCs are betting on generative AI gaining a foothold in large industries despite current challenges.

  6. The technology's computational requirements pose challenges, with projections of gigawatt-scale data centers needed.

  7. Environmental concerns arise as generative AI demand prolongs the use of coal-fired power plants.

  8. Despite these issues, investment in generative AI startups shows no signs of slowing down, with companies like ElevenLabs and Black Forest Labs seeking substantial funding rounds.

Midjourney's New AI Image Editing Tool: Innovation Meets Controversy

In the ever-evolving landscape of AI-powered creativity, Midjourney is poised to make a significant leap forward. The company, known for its AI image generation capabilities, is set to release an upgraded web tool that promises to revolutionize image editing. However, this advancement comes with a side of controversy and concern.

David Holtz, Midjourney's CEO, recently announced that the new tool, slated for release "early next week," will allow users to edit any uploaded image from the web using Midjourney's generative AI. The tool's capabilities extend beyond simple touch-ups; it will enable users to retexture objects in images, essentially "repainting" their colors and details based on text captions.

This development places Midjourney at the forefront of the ongoing debate about AI-edited images. Tech giants like Meta and Google have grappled with similar issues, struggling to find the right balance between innovation and responsibility. While Meta has been working on labeling AI-edited images, Google has introduced powerful AI features that leave no visible trace of alteration.

Midjourney's approach to image provenance has been a mixed bag. The company committed to using the IPTC's Digital Source Type property last year, a standard that embeds metadata indicating AI generation. However, it has yet to adopt the more comprehensive C2PA technology, which traces an image's full history, including the equipment and software used in its creation.

Aware of the potential for misuse, Midjourney plans a cautious rollout. The upgraded tool will initially be restricted to a subset of the current community, with increased human moderation and "new, more advanced AI moderators" to prevent abuse. Holtz acknowledged the challenge, stating, "Honestly, we're not sure how to precisely restrict deployment of this feature." The company is turning to its community for guidance, using a poll to determine which users should get first access.

The risks associated with such powerful editing tools are not trivial. There are concerns about copyright infringement on a massive scale and the potential for creating and spreading misleading deepfakes. The latter is a growing problem, with Clarity, a deepfake detection firm, reporting a 900% increase in deepfake creation and publication compared to the previous year. This proliferation has led to widespread concern, with a recent YouGov poll finding that 85% of Americans are worried about misleading deepfakes spreading online.

The legal landscape surrounding deepfakes is still evolving. While there's no federal law criminalizing deepfakes in the U.S., more than 10 states have enacted statutes against AI-aided impersonation. California is considering a law that would allow judges to order the removal of deepfakes or impose monetary penalties on their creators.

Midjourney's track record in responsible AI deployment has been less than stellar, facing lawsuits over the alleged use of copyrighted content in training its models. However, the company has recently taken steps to limit the spread of deepfakes, including implementing filters for political figures in the lead-up to the U.S. presidential election.

As Midjourney prepares to launch this powerful new tool, the AI community watches with a mix of excitement and apprehension. The potential for creative expression is vast, but so too are the risks of misuse. How Midjourney navigates these choppy waters could set a precedent for the future of AI-powered image editing.
