xAI loses CFO amid wave of executive departures
xAI's CFO is the latest executive to leave Elon Musk's AI firm

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI is experiencing significant leadership turbulence, with Chief Financial Officer Mike Liberatore becoming the latest senior executive to exit the firm, according to recent reports from The Wall Street Journal.
Liberatore, who previously held executive positions at Airbnb, had a remarkably brief tenure at xAI. He joined the AI startup in April but departed by the end of July, spending just three months with the company. During his short stint, the CFO played a crucial role in several major financial initiatives that were vital to xAI's growth strategy.
His most significant contribution was helping orchestrate xAI's ambitious $10 billion fundraising effort, which included $5 billion in debt financing and an additional $5 billion in equity funding. Notably, nearly half of the equity investment came from SpaceX, another company in Musk's business portfolio, highlighting the interconnected nature of the entrepreneur's ventures.
Beyond fundraising, Liberatore also supervised aspects of xAI's infrastructure expansion, particularly overseeing data center development in Memphis. This expansion is critical for the company's ability to train and deploy its AI models at scale, making his departure potentially disruptive to ongoing operations.
The CFO's exit is part of a troubling pattern of high-level departures that has plagued xAI in recent months. In August, the company lost its general counsel, Robert Keele, who had been with the firm for just over a year. Around the same timeframe, Raghu Rao, a senior lawyer, also left the organization, creating additional gaps in the legal team.
Perhaps most significantly, Igor Babuschkin, one of xAI's co-founders, announced his departure last month. Babuschkin cited his intention to launch his own venture capital firm focused specifically on AI safety research, indicating potential philosophical differences about the company's direction or priorities.
The executive exodus extends beyond xAI's immediate leadership team. Linda Yaccarino, who previously served as CEO of X (formerly Twitter), resigned in July following controversial incidents involving Grok, xAI's chatbot accessible through the X platform. Her departure came amid concerns about the chatbot's behavior and performance, suggesting operational challenges with xAI's flagship product.
These departures raise questions about the stability and internal culture at xAI, particularly given the rapid succession of exits across different departments and seniority levels. The loss of key personnel in finance, legal, and technical leadership could potentially impact the company's ability to execute its strategic initiatives and maintain competitive momentum in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
The timing of these departures is particularly noteworthy given xAI's recent major funding round and expansion efforts. Losing experienced executives during a critical growth phase could create operational disruptions and make it more challenging to achieve the company's ambitious goals in the highly competitive artificial intelligence sector.
xAI's connection to X through its Grok chatbot integration also means that leadership instability could affect user experience across Musk's social media platform, potentially impacting both companies' performance and reputation.

Google's NotebookLM now lets you customize the tone of its AI podcasts

NotebookLM introduces customizable podcast formats and new AI voices.
Google has enhanced its AI-powered research assistant NotebookLM with significant new customization options for Audio Overviews, the AI-generated podcasts that summarize and discuss user documents. This update allows users to tailor the tone and format of their AI-generated content to better match their specific needs and preferences.
The platform now offers four distinct podcast formats when generating Audio Overviews. The "Deep Dive" format provides comprehensive conversational dialogues where two AI hosts explore topics with extensive depth and questioning. For users seeking efficiency, the "Brief" option delivers concise, bite-sized overviews designed to quickly convey core concepts from source materials.
Those looking for feedback can select the "Critique" format, which offers constructive reviews and improvement suggestions for their sources. Meanwhile, the "Debate" format presents two AI hosts engaging in discussions from different perspectives, creating a dynamic exploration of the material. Each format allows users to customize the duration of their podcasts according to their time constraints and preferences.
Beyond format customization, Google has addressed user requests by introducing new AI voice options for the podcast hosts, adding variety to the listening experience. This enhancement comes as part of Google's broader expansion of NotebookLM's capabilities over recent months.
The platform has recently introduced Video Overviews, enabling users to transform complex multimedia content including notes, PDFs, and images into accessible visual presentations. Additionally, NotebookLM now features curated notebooks from various authors, publications, researchers, and nonprofits, expanding the range of explorable topics.
Google officially launched standalone mobile applications for Android and iOS in May, making the platform more accessible across devices. The new customization features are rolling out globally across all supported languages and should be available to all users within the week, representing Google's continued investment in making AI-powered research tools more versatile and user-friendly.
