Senator challenges Pentagon's controversial AI partnership with Musk's company

Warren presses Pentagon over decision to grant xAI access to classified networks

Senator Elizabeth Warren has directly challenged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the Pentagon's controversial decision to grant Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI access to classified military networks. In a formal letter sent Monday, the Massachusetts Democrat raised serious concerns about the security implications of this partnership.

Warren's primary concern centers on Grok, xAI's AI chatbot, which has demonstrated troubling behavior patterns. The senator highlighted that Grok has produced disturbing content, including advice on committing violent crimes and terrorist attacks, antisemitic material, and inappropriate content involving minors. These incidents raise questions about the AI system's safety protocols and content filtering mechanisms.

"Grok's apparent lack of adequate guardrails could pose serious risks to the safety of U.S. military personnel and to the cybersecurity of classified systems," Warren stated in her letter. She demanded comprehensive information about how the Department of Defense plans to address these potential national security vulnerabilities.

Warren isn't alone in her concerns. Last month, multiple nonprofit organizations called for an immediate suspension of Grok's deployment across federal agencies, including the DoD. Their alarm was triggered after X users repeatedly exploited the chatbot to create sexualized images from real photographs of women and children without consent. The timing of Warren's letter coincides with a class action lawsuit filed against xAI, alleging the company's AI generated sexual content using real images of minors.

This controversy unfolds against a complex backdrop of shifting AI partnerships within the defense sector. The Pentagon recently designated Anthropic, an AI safety-focused company, as a supply chain risk after the firm refused to provide unrestricted military access to its AI systems. Anthropic had previously been the sole AI company with classified-ready systems approved for government use.

Following the dispute with Anthropic, the Department of Defense pivoted to new partnerships with both OpenAI and xAI, according to reports from Axios. This strategic shift raises questions about how the military evaluates AI companies and balances operational needs with security concerns.

A senior Pentagon official confirmed that while Grok has been approved for classified environments, it hasn't yet been deployed operationally. Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell expressed optimism about the partnership, stating the department "looks forward to deploying Grok to its official AI platform GenAI.mil in the very near future."

GenAI.mil represents the military's secure platform for generative AI tools, designed to operate within government-approved cloud environments. The system primarily supports non-classified activities such as research, document creation, and data analysis, providing DoD personnel with access to large language models and other AI capabilities.

Warren's letter specifically requests detailed documentation about the xAI partnership, including copies of agreements and explanations of security measures. She wants assurances that Grok will be protected from cyberattacks and won't inadvertently leak sensitive military information.

These concerns are amplified by recent security incidents involving Musk-associated organizations. Last week, reports emerged that a former employee of Musk's Department of Government Efficiency allegedly stole personal data from the Social Security Administration, storing it on a portable device. This incident adds weight to broader concerns about data security practices within Musk's various enterprises.

The controversy highlights the ongoing challenges faced by government agencies as they navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape while maintaining security standards and public trust.

Memories.ai, co-founded by former Meta engineers Shawn Shen and Ben Zhou, is developing visual memory infrastructure for AI wearables and robotics. The startup announced a partnership with Nvidia, utilizing Cosmos-Reason 2 and Nvidia Metropolis to advance their technology.

Founded in 2024 after the duo's work on Meta's Ray-Ban glasses, the company has raised $16 million and launched its large visual memory model (LVMM). Unlike text-based memory systems, Memories.ai focuses on enabling AI devices to remember and recall visual experiences in the physical world.

Picsart now allows creators to 'hire' AI assistants through agent marketplace

Picsart launches AI agent marketplace for creators to hire digital assistants.

AI-powered design platform Picsart has launched an AI agent marketplace, enabling creators to "hire" AI assistants for specific tasks like resizing social content and editing product photos on Shopify. With over 130 million worldwide users that skew Gen Z, Picsart positions itself as a more advanced alternative to Canva for social media managers and content creators.

The timing aligns with growing industry demand for agentic AI chatbots, fueled by viral projects like OpenClaw. "Creators have been stuck as the operator of every workflow — the one doing, not deciding," said Hovhannes Avoyan, Picsart's founder and CEO. "Our Agents change that relationship — you set direction, the agent builds a plan using real data, you approve, it executes."

The platform launches with four specialized agents. Flair, the most sophisticated option, integrates with Shopify to analyze market trends and recommend improvements for online stores, including product photo editing suggestions. Future updates will enable A/B testing and proactive recommendations for underperforming products.

Resize Pro uses AI to resize images and videos for different platform dimensions, generatively extending frames when needed to ensure intentional composition rather than haphazard cropping. The Remix agent allows creators to describe styles like "vintage film" or "cyberpunk" and edit photo libraries accordingly, while Swap changes backgrounds in bulk.

These agents integrate with WhatsApp and Telegram, allowing creators to chat with their AI assistants anywhere. "As agents extend to messaging apps creators already use, that conversation happens anywhere — at your desk or from the subway," Avoyan added.

To address potential AI hallucination concerns, Picsart offers adjustable "autonomy levels" that can require creator approval before actions are taken. The service follows Picsart's freemium model, with a free plan offering limited AI credits and premium subscriptions starting at $10 monthly when billed annually. Using AI agents likely requires a paid plan.
