US Army awards Anduril massive 10-year defense contract

US Army announces contract with Anduril worth up to $20B

The U.S. Army has struck a landmark deal with defense technology startup Anduril, signing a 10-year contract potentially worth $20 billion. This massive agreement represents one of the largest defense contracts awarded to a technology startup in recent years.

The comprehensive contract includes a five-year base period with an option to extend for another five years. It covers Anduril's full suite of offerings, including hardware, software, infrastructure, and services. According to the Army, this single enterprise agreement consolidates over 120 separate procurement actions that were previously required for Anduril's commercial solutions.

"The modern battlefield is increasingly defined by software," stated Gabe Chiulli, Chief Technology Officer at the Department of Defense's Office of the Chief Information Officer. "To maintain our advantage, we must be able to acquire and deploy software capabilities with speed and efficiency."

Anduril was co-founded by Palmer Luckey, the entrepreneur who previously founded virtual reality company Oculus and sold it to Facebook (now Meta). Luckey later left Facebook amid controversy after reports surfaced about his donations to a pro-Trump political organization. He has consistently maintained that media coverage misrepresented his political positions.

According to a recent New York Times profile, Luckey and Anduril have found favor with the second Trump administration due to their ambitious vision for transforming U.S. military capabilities. The company aims to revolutionize defense operations through autonomous systems including fighter jets, drones, submarines, and other advanced military technologies. Named after a magical object from "The Lord of the Rings" (similar to fellow defense contractor Palantir), Anduril reportedly generated approximately $2 billion in revenue last year.

The company's rapid growth continues, with separate reports indicating Anduril is pursuing a new funding round at an impressive $60 billion valuation, highlighting investor confidence in the defense technology sector.

This contract announcement comes amid broader tensions between the Department of Defense and AI companies. Anthropic is currently engaged in a legal dispute with the DoD, suing over its designation as a supply chain threat following failed contract negotiations. Meanwhile, OpenAI has faced consumer criticism and internal executive departures after signing its own Pentagon agreement.

Luckey has been vocal about these industry dynamics, particularly criticizing Anthropic's position on AI limitations. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he argued that Anthropic's attempts to establish boundaries around AI use in autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance represent "an untenable position that the United States cannot possibly accept."

The Anduril contract reflects the military's growing emphasis on incorporating cutting-edge technology and artificial intelligence into defense operations. As traditional defense contractors face increasing competition from tech startups, this deal demonstrates the Pentagon's willingness to partner with innovative companies that can rapidly develop and deploy advanced capabilities.

The agreement also signals the military's recognition that future conflicts will be increasingly defined by technological superiority, particularly in software-driven systems and autonomous platforms. By consolidating multiple procurement processes into a single comprehensive contract, the Army aims to streamline acquisition processes and accelerate the deployment of next-generation defense technologies.

ByteDance delays AI video tool amid Hollywood legal concerns

ByteDance reportedly pauses global launch of its Seedance 2.0 video generator

ByteDance has postponed the global rollout of its AI video generator Seedance 2.0, originally planned for mid-March. The TikTok parent company launched the tool in China in February, creating viral videos including celebrity deepfakes.

Hollywood studios responded with legal action, sending cease-and-desist letters. Disney accused ByteDance of "virtual smash-and-grab" of intellectual property. The company is now working with engineers and lawyers to strengthen IP safeguards before proceeding with the international launch.

How Otter.ai's CEO is pushing the company to be more than just a meeting scribe

Otter.ai evolves from meeting transcription to enterprise knowledge base platform.

Otter.ai CEO Sam Liang is transforming his company from a simple meeting notetaker into an enterprise knowledge powerhouse. The Silicon Valley-based AI startup released a new suite of enterprise tools Tuesday, marking a significant evolution in its business strategy.

The new product lineup includes an API for custom integrations with platforms like Jira and HubSpot, an MCP server that connects Otter data to external AI models, and an AI agent capable of searching company meeting notes and presentations. These tools are designed to funnel meeting information into centralized knowledge bases, helping companies extract greater value from recorded conversations.

"We are evolving from a meeting notetaker to a corporate meeting knowledge base," Liang explained. "This is a system record for conversations. It can help corporations scale their growth and drive measurable business value."

Founded in 2016 when meeting transcription companies were scarce, Otter now faces intense competition from AI boom-driven startups like Granola and Circleback, plus established players like Fireflies. Liang believes this strategic pivot separates Otter from its former peers.

The CEO argues that meetings contain the majority of company knowledge, from customer sales calls to marketing strategy discussions. However, without centralized storage, this information remains trapped in silos. "A lot of times, inefficiency happens because of information silos," Liang noted. "One team doesn't know what the other team is doing."

Privacy concerns remain significant, as transcriptions capture informal conversations and small talk that may contain sensitive information. Otter faces an August class-action lawsuit alleging unauthorized recording of private conversations for training purposes.

While Liang cannot comment on the lawsuit specifically, he maintains confidence in the company's direction. "My view is that we are on the right side of history," he said. "We're building this new AI revolution. If you want AI to help, you need to put AI in the meetings."
