Nvidia says two mystery customers accounted for 39% of Q2 revenue

Nvidia's explosive growth story has a concerning dependency issue lurking beneath its record-breaking numbers. The AI chip giant's latest SEC filing reveals that nearly 40% of its second-quarter revenue came from just two unnamed customers, raising questions about the sustainability of its meteoric rise.

The chipmaker posted stunning Q2 results with record revenue of $46.7 billion for the quarter ending July 27 — a remarkable 56% year-over-year increase fueled by the artificial intelligence data center boom. However, the concentration of this growth among a tiny customer base tells a more complex story.

According to the filing, a single customer dubbed 'Customer A' represented 23% of total Q2 revenue, while 'Customer B' accounted for 16%. Combined, these two anonymous buyers generated nearly $18.5 billion in sales for Nvidia during the three-month period.

The concentration becomes even more pronounced when examining the broader customer landscape. During the first half of fiscal 2024, Customer A and Customer B represented 20% and 15% of total revenue respectively. Adding four other major customers into the mix — accounting for 14%, 11%, 11%, and 10% of Q2 revenue — reveals that just six customers drove the vast majority of Nvidia's business.

Importantly, Nvidia clarifies that these are 'direct' customers — original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), system integrators, or distributors who purchase chips directly from the company. This distinction suggests that household names like Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon, or Google are likely not Customer A or B, though these tech giants may be indirectly driving the massive spending through their AI infrastructure buildouts.

The indirect connection becomes clearer when examining Nvidia's customer breakdown. Chief Financial Officer Nicole Kress revealed that large cloud service providers accounted for 50% of Nvidia's data center revenue, which itself represented 88% of total company revenue. This indicates that while cloud giants aren't buying directly from Nvidia, they're creating enormous downstream demand through intermediaries.

This customer concentration presents both opportunities and risks for Nvidia's future. On the positive side, the company is riding an unprecedented wave of AI investment. Organizations worldwide are racing to build artificial intelligence capabilities, driving insatiable demand for Nvidia's specialized chips that power machine learning workloads.

However, the heavy reliance on a small customer base creates significant vulnerability. If either Customer A or Customer B were to reduce orders — whether due to economic pressures, strategic shifts, or competitive alternatives — Nvidia could face substantial revenue disruption. The concentration risk is particularly acute in the rapidly evolving AI market, where customer priorities and spending patterns can shift quickly.

Gimme Credit analyst Dave Novosel offers a balanced perspective on this concentration risk. While acknowledging that 'concentration of revenue among such a small group of customers does present a significant risk,' he notes positive factors that may mitigate concerns. These major customers 'have bountiful cash on hand, generate massive amounts of free cash flow, and are expected to spend lavishly on data centers over the next couple of years.'

The broader AI infrastructure boom supports this optimistic view. Major technology companies are investing billions in data center expansion and AI capabilities, with no signs of slowing. The race to develop competitive AI products and services continues to drive demand for the specialized computing power that only companies like Nvidia can provide.

Nevertheless, investors and analysts will be watching carefully for signs of customer diversification in future quarters. A healthy business typically spreads revenue across a broader customer base to reduce dependency risks. As competition in the AI chip market intensifies and more players enter the space, Nvidia may need to work harder to maintain its dominant position while expanding its customer portfolio.

For now, Nvidia continues to benefit from being in the right place at the right time, providing essential infrastructure for the AI revolution. But the company's future success may depend on its ability to maintain customer relationships while reducing concentration risk through strategic diversification.

Meta's billions invested in Scale AI faces early turbulence and departures.

Cracks are forming in Meta’s partnership with Scale AI

OpenAI Agent

Meta's $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI is showing cracks just months after bringing CEO Alexandr Wang to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs. Key executive Ruben Mayer left after two months, while Meta's TBD Labs increasingly favors competitors Surge and Mercor over Scale AI's data labeling services, citing quality concerns. Scale AI has lost major clients OpenAI and Google, leading to 200 layoffs. Internal chaos at Meta's AI unit has emerged as new OpenAI talent clashes with company bureaucracy, prompting several high-profile departures including researchers Rishabh Agarwal, Chaya Nayak, and Rohan Varma.

Vocal Image is using AI to help people communicate better

Estonia's Vocal Image raises $3.6M for AI-powered voice coaching app.

Estonia-based startup Vocal Image has reached 4 million app downloads while helping people improve their voice and communication skills through AI-powered coaching. The company's success story is deeply personal to CEO Nick Lahoika, who was born in Belarus, didn't speak English until relocating to Estonia, and once struggled with speaking anxiety and unclear diction that led to school bullying.

Lahoika's transformation began in his early twenties when he met vocal coach Maryna "Rusia" Shukiurava, who taught him that voice and communication could be trained. Together with co-founder and CTO Mikalai Karaliou, they started a YouTube channel that eventually evolved into Vocal Image, positioning their subscription-based app as an affordable alternative to one-on-one coaching that users can access from home.

The platform offers an interactive library featuring tongue twisters, breathing exercises, and gesture advice, with increasing AI integration providing automated feedback and personalized tips. The guided journeys focus primarily on work-related goals such as enhancing professional leadership skills, developing public speaking abilities, and building presentation confidence. However, the app also supports users seeking general self-confidence improvement and serves the LGBTQ community, reflecting Shukiurava's advocacy work in Belarus.

The founding trio relocated from Belarus to Estonia after protests against President Alexander Lukashenko failed and were met with brutal repression. Estonia's favorable business environment proved beneficial for the startup's growth. After joining Tallinn-based accelerator Startup Wise Guys, Vocal Image achieved $6.5 million in annual recurring revenue on less than $1 million in pre-seed funding.

The company recently secured a $3.6 million seed round led by French edtech VC firm Educapital, with participation from Estonia's Specialist VC and Germany's Generations Fund. As of August, Vocal Image reports $12 million ARR with 50,000 paid users among its 160,000 active user base.

Vocal Image's competitive advantage lies in its GDPR-compliant AI dataset, collecting approximately 35,000 recordings daily and amassing over 1 million real-voice samples. These recordings are labeled through Voice Rating, a collaborative feature allowing users to categorize voices as "confident" or "childlike." This valuable dataset not only improves the app's accuracy but could potentially help other AI startups fine-tune artificial voices, creating additional revenue opportunities beyond their B2C foundation.
