Cambridge-based startup ReactWise is applying artificial intelligence to accelerate chemical manufacturing, a crucial step in drug development. The Y Combinator-backed company offers an "AI copilot for chemical process optimization" that reportedly speeds up the traditional trial-and-error approach by 30 times.

"Making drugs is really like cooking," explains co-founder and CEO Alexander Pomberger. "You need to find the best recipe to make a drug with high purity and yield." While pharmaceutical companies have historically relied on trial-and-error methods or staff expertise, ReactWise's automation significantly reduces required iteration cycles.

The company aims to deliver "one shot prediction" capabilities within two years, where its AI can immediately predict ideal experiments without multiple iterations. ReactWise's foundation consists of thousands of chemical reactions performed in its labs to feed its AI models. Using high-throughput screening methods, the startup can analyze 300 reactions simultaneously, dramatically accelerating data collection.

"In pharma, there are a handful of reaction types used repeatedly," Pomberger notes. "We generate thousands of data points for these reactions, train foundational models, and when a pharmaceutical company needs to develop a process, they don't start from scratch." The startup is working toward 20,000 chemical data points covering the most important reactions by summer.

Initially focused on small molecule drugs, ReactWise also works with material manufacturers in polymer drug delivery. Their software interfaces with robotic lab equipment for precision manufacturing, though they exclusively sell software rather than hardware.

Founded in July 2024, ReactWise has 12 pilot trials running with pharmaceutical companies, including some major players. The UK startup recently disclosed its $3.4 million pre-seed funding, comprising $500,000 from YC, a £1.2 million Innovate UK grant, and approximately $1.5 million from venture capitalists and angels.

While ReactWise focuses on one specific aspect of drug development, Pomberger emphasizes its significant impact: "A typical drug takes 10-12 years from start to launch, with process development taking 1-2 years. If we can reduce workflows by 60%, the effect is substantial."

ReactWise claims competitive advantage through its high-quality datasets on chemical reactions, which rivals lack. "We offer pretrained models that fundamentally understand chemistry. A client can simply specify their reaction of interest and immediately receive process recommendations based on our laboratory pre-work—something nobody else currently provides," Pomberger states.

What makes this crucial: The company expects its first conversions to full-scale deployments later this year.
