SpaceXAI's Grok 4.5 rivals top AI models at a fraction of the cost.

SpaceXAI releases Grok 4.5, which Elon describes as an 'Opus-class model'

SpaceXAI has launched Grok 4.5, its first major model release since the company went public earlier this year. The new model is positioned as an all-purpose workhorse capable of handling the tasks that have become central to AI adoption: coding, app development, research, writing, office work, and routine knowledge tasks.

What sets Grok 4.5 apart, according to SpaceXAI, is not just what it can do — but how efficiently it does it. The company claims the model delivers twice the token efficiency compared to other leading models on the market. As token costs continue to be a pressure point for businesses adopting AI at scale, that kind of efficiency could be a meaningful competitive advantage if it holds up in real-world use.

Elon Musk, SpaceXAI's founder, took to X — the social media platform that operates as a subsidiary of SpaceXAI — to hype the release. "Based on strong positive feedback from customers in our beta test program, @SpaceXAI will make Grok 4.5 available to the public tomorrow. It is an Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost," Musk wrote.

He followed up with a more specific comparison: "Our internal assessment is that Grok 4.5 is roughly comparable to Opus 4.7, but much faster. The combination of capability, faster speed and lower cost is what makes it competitive."

Opus 4.7 is Anthropic's model built for intensive, complex tasks — generally considered one of the more capable options currently available. Musk's framing puts Grok 4.5 squarely in that tier, while undercutting it significantly on price.

The numbers back that claim up, at least on paper. SpaceXAI has priced Grok 4.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. Anthropic's Opus 4.7, by comparison, runs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens — making Grok 4.5 roughly 60% cheaper on input and more than 75% cheaper on output.

OpenAI's pricing sits in between, depending on the model tier. Its most premium option, Sol, costs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens. Its more affordable variant, Luna, comes in at $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens — putting it close to Grok 4.5 on price, though likely not on capability.

SpaceXAI also published benchmark results alongside the release, which showed Grok 4.5 performing competitively against top models from rival companies — though not quite reaching best-in-class across the board.

The release comes during a notably busy stretch for the AI industry. OpenAI is set to release GPT-5.6 on Thursday, which it has described as its "strongest model yet." The rollout of that model had previously been delayed due to concerns raised by the Trump administration over its potential security implications, making its imminent launch a closely watched moment in the industry.

With Grok 4.5 now public and GPT-5.6 on the horizon, the competition at the top of the AI market is heating up fast — and pricing is quickly becoming just as important a battleground as raw performance.

Google's SynthID watermark successfully exposes a fake AI-generated image of McConnell.

A fake image of Senator Mitch McConnell in a hospital bed spread widely across Reddit and X before fact-checking site Snopes debunked it using Google's SynthID watermark — a rare, high-profile win for anti-deepfake technology.

SynthID embeds an invisible signature directly into AI-generated images, surviving even screenshots across platforms. It can only detect images from tools that participate in the program. Gemini models have included the watermark since its 2025 launch, with OpenAI joining in May 2026. Users can verify images through Gemini or OpenAI's public verification tool.

OpenAI releases new voice models for more natural live conversations

OpenAI launches GPT-Live-1 voice models for more natural, real-time conversations.

OpenAI has released two new conversational voice models — GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini — designed to make AI-powered conversations feel significantly more natural. Unlike previous voice features that stitched together separate speech-to-text, language, and text-to-speech models, these are full-duplex models capable of speaking and listening simultaneously. This allows users to interrupt naturally and enables features like real-time live translation.

The company is replacing its current Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT with GPT-Live-1 mini as the default experience, while paid users will gain access to the more powerful GPT-Live-1. The new models are also connected to OpenAI's latest text models, such as GPT-5.5, giving voice mode access to search, reasoning, and agentic capabilities during a conversation. The assistant can also present information visually when relevant.

OpenAI says the new voice mode is built for longer interactions. ChatGPT Voice product lead Atty Eleti mentioned having 30- to 40-minute voice conversations during walks, suggesting the company sees voice as a potential primary interface for complex, hands-free work. OpenAI has even hinted at future hardware, with reports pointing to a possible AI-powered earbud launch, though no official details were shared.

The company also emphasized responsible design, noting that the new models include safeguards for age-appropriate responses and sensitive topics like self-harm. Despite the more human-like tone, OpenAI was clear that this is not intended to be a companion product.

Still, the new voice mode has room to improve. A live demo of Hindi translation revealed a noticeable American accent and unnaturally formal phrasing. OpenAI said the models are optimized for "most spoken languages" but stopped short of specifying which ones. With over 150 million people already using ChatGPT's voice and dictation features, the pressure to deliver a truly seamless experience across languages and use cases continues to grow.
