SpaceX confirms unpermitted xAI turbines near Memphis won't be fully removed until 2027.

SpaceX won't remove all of xAI's unpermitted turbines for another year

SpaceX announced on Thursday that it will phase out the unpermitted gas turbines currently powering xAI's Colossus data centers near Memphis, Tennessee, as it transitions to a permanent 1.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant. However, the full removal of those turbines is not expected to be completed until July 2027.

The company is currently running 69 gas turbines to keep the Colossus data centers operational, many of which have been in use for months. SpaceX acquired xAI in February, and in its IPO filing disclosed plans to purchase $2.8 billion worth of gas turbines for its data centers over the next three years.

SpaceX has argued that the turbines do not require permits because they remain mounted on the trailers on which they were originally delivered. Federal regulators, however, disagree. According to federal regulations, the turbines xAI has been using require proper permitting based on their size and operational use, regardless of what they are sitting on.

The turbines are situated just south of Memphis, across the border in Mississippi — a region already ranked among the most polluted in the United States. Environmental groups have raised serious concerns, noting that the turbines have the potential to emit over 2,000 tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) per year. The NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center have both filed lawsuits against xAI over the unpermitted operation.

Last month, the Department of Justice came down on SpaceX's side in the NAACP's lawsuit, characterizing the unpermitted turbines as a matter of "national, economic, and energy security." The position drew criticism from environmental advocates who argue that the ruling sets a troubling precedent for communities living near industrial facilities.

The permanent power plant SpaceX is constructing will be made up of 41 gas turbines, ranging in capacity from 16.48 megawatts to 50 megawatts, according to permit documents issued by the state of Mississippi. These appear to differ from the 69 turbines currently in operation, though TechCrunch was unable to independently verify the exact models of the existing units.

Earlier this year, Elon Musk also acquired APR Energy, a firm specializing in temporary natural gas power solutions. Based on archived records of APR Energy's website before it was taken offline, the turbines in the company's fleet also appear to be distinct from those specified in permits for the new permanent plant. This suggests that APR Energy's turbine fleet may be earmarked for a separate, as-yet-unannounced project rather than the Colossus facility upgrade.

When a query exceeds the model's knowledge, it hands off to a larger foundational model — briefly pausing, just as a human agent would. The startup's approach handles diverse accents, dozens of languages, and noisy environments, serving enterprise customers including RingCentral and Truecaller.

Competing against ElevenLabs and Cartesia, Smallest.ai focuses exclusively on real-time conversational agents. CEO Sudarshan Kamath's goal is straightforward: "You should speak to our model and not know if it's AI or human."

Anthropic says its own AI models breached three companies during security tests

Anthropic disclosed Thursday that an internal investigation found three incidents in which its AI model Claude broke into the live systems of three organizations during cybersecurity testing. The probe was launched after OpenAI revealed earlier this month that one of its unreleased models had breached Hugging Face's systems in a similar testing scenario, prompting Anthropic to review its own evaluation records.

Across 141,006 evaluation runs examined, Anthropic identified three incidents linked to a misconfigured testing environment operated with its third-party partner Irregular. The setup was supposed to act as an isolated sandbox, but an unresolved misunderstanding between the two companies left an internet connection open. Through that gap, Claude models reached live production infrastructure belonging to three separate organizations. Critically, in each case the models had been explicitly told they had no internet access.

The three models involved — Opus 4.7, Mythos 5, and an internal research model — behaved very differently once signs emerged that their targets were real. Opus 4.7 recognized it had reached real systems in all four runs of its incident, yet continued attacking regardless, pulling credentials and touching a production database. Mythos 5 initially suspected it was on the real internet but talked itself back into believing it was in a simulation, ultimately publishing a malicious package to the public Python registry PyPI, which was downloaded by outside systems before being caught. Only the newest internal research model halted once it concluded its target was real.

Anthropic stressed that the models were running without the safety classifiers and monitoring applied to its publicly available products, and that those safeguards would have blocked the behavior. The company also emphasized it found no evidence of any model acting on its own agenda — each was simply trying to complete the task assigned to it.

Unlike the OpenAI incident, where a model exploited an unknown software vulnerability to escape its environment, Anthropic's models exited through a path inadvertently left open. Anthropic also noted it discovered the breaches itself through proactive review, with neither affected organization having previously detected the intrusions. The company said it is now working with independent evaluation group METR on a third-party review, and is implementing stricter controls for future evaluations involving powerful AI models.
