Reddit shuts down RSS feeds and public API to combat AI scraping.

Reddit is killing RSS feeds and ending public API access because of AI bots

Reddit has announced it will shut down support for RSS feeds on November 13, citing their growing use as a tool for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. The company described RSS as a "common surface" for this kind of activity, and said the decision was necessary to protect its platform. For many users and developers, the move marks yet another step away from the open web principles that once defined Reddit's early community.

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, is a long-standing web format that allows users and applications to receive updates from websites in a standardized way. It was especially popular during the blogging era, enabling people to follow multiple sites through a single news-reading app. Google once ran the most popular RSS reader before shutting it down in 2013, leaving the space to services like Feedly and other independent tools. Reddit acknowledged the format's legacy, stating it was "grateful to everyone who used it to stay connected to Reddit."

The timing is no coincidence. Reddit has built a profitable side business licensing its vast library of user-generated content to AI companies. In its most recent quarter, the company reported that revenue beyond advertising — much of it from these AI licensing deals — grew 24% year-over-year to $43 million. Allowing free, automated access to that same content via RSS feeds would undercut that business model significantly.

For moderators who relied on RSS for community alerts and workflow automation, Reddit is recommending a switch to the Discord Relay Devvit app. The company urged moderators to migrate their setups before the November 13 shutdown to avoid any disruption. However, Reddit acknowledged there is no direct replacement for RSS feeds used outside of a moderator's own community — a gap that has already drawn complaints from users who relied on the format to follow Reddit content through third-party readers.

Alongside the RSS shutdown, Reddit confirmed that its public API will also close by March 2027. This will affect a wide range of tools that depend on programmatic access to Reddit's data, including social listening platforms, academic research tools, and AI assistants that currently use Reddit to help answer user questions. After the closure, any company wanting access to Reddit's data will need to negotiate a commercial licensing deal with the platform.

Reddit also announced changes to Old Reddit, the classic text-heavy version of the site. Access will be restricted to logged-in moderators and users who have been active on Old Reddit within the past six months — a threshold the company quietly extended from 90 days to six months shortly after the announcement went public. Reddit attributed these restrictions to the same concerns about abusive scraping and automated traffic.

Finally, Reddit reminded developers building approved third-party apps and bots to register their tools with the company before January 12, 2027. Any developer who fails to register by that date will lose API access. Together, these changes signal a clear shift in Reddit's strategy: tightening control over its data as it looks to monetize its content more aggressively in the age of AI.

Google's new AI model leads benchmarks with a focus on cybersecurity.

Google releases Gemini 4 Argon, called its most powerful model yet

Google has launched Gemini 4 Argon, its most advanced AI model to date. Designed with cybersecurity at its core, Argon is being rolled out to select partners through Google's Fairwind Program. The model can autonomously detect, validate, and patch critical software vulnerabilities — a capability Google says sets it apart from rivals.

Beyond security, Argon excels at coding, engineering, and visual analysis, including parsing long videos and complex charts. Google staff are already using it daily for tasks like debugging and codebase migrations.

Google claims Argon outperforms OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Fable across major AI benchmarks. The launch marks another strong moment for Google, whose Gemini app recently surpassed one billion monthly users.

Shopify debuts Canvas, a way to build online stores by chatting with AI

Shopify Canvas AI store builder interface displayed on a desktop screen

Shopify's new Canvas tool lets merchants build stores through AI chat.

Shopify has launched a new AI-powered site-building tool called Canvas, allowing merchants to create and customize their online stores simply by chatting with Shopify's AI agent, Sidekick. Previously, Shopify offered a no-code builder based on themes, sections, and blocks, but deeper customizations still required coding knowledge or a hired developer. Canvas is designed to remove that barrier entirely.

As merchants describe what they want in conversation, Sidekick makes changes in real time and Canvas renders the results immediately — not as a static preview, but as the actual code powering the store. This means merchants can test full interactivity, animations, and how their store appears across different screen sizes as they build. To keep pace with the merchant's view, Sidekick also takes screenshots of the work in progress so it can see exactly what the user sees.

Sidekick itself is not a new product — it has previously been used to write code, build apps, and customize themes — but Canvas brings it together into a unified, visual site-building experience. To make this possible, Shopify gave Sidekick direct access to theme files and simplified the underlying theme architecture so the AI can more easily understand and modify a store's structure, logic, and design. Merchants retain the option to click on individual elements and make changes manually if they prefer.

Canvas joins a growing wave of AI-driven website builders from companies including Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, as well as vibe-coding platforms like Lovable and Replit, all pointing toward a future where coding a website by hand is no longer necessary.

The product is still in its early stages, and the initial launch does not yet include support for third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, translations, or mobile editing. Shopify has indicated these features are on the roadmap. As Canvas matures, it could significantly lower the bar for launching an online store, making e-commerce more accessible to those without development budgets or technical expertise.
