Perplexity launches local AI agent for all Mac users

Perplexity's Personal Computer is now available to everyone on Mac

Perplexity has made its Personal Computer AI agent available to all Mac users through its new desktop application, marking a significant expansion from its previous limited release. The company announced Thursday that the local AI assistant, previously restricted to Max subscribers and requiring a waitlist, can now be accessed by anyone with a Mac computer.

Personal Computer represents Perplexity's answer to OpenClaw and similar local AI agents, designed to handle complex, multi-step workflows directly on users' devices. Unlike cloud-based solutions, this tool operates locally while maintaining access to files, applications, web resources, and over 400 connectors to execute tasks on behalf of users.

The AI agent builds upon Perplexity's existing "Computer" platform but brings those capabilities to individual devices rather than keeping them cloud-bound. According to the company, this approach addresses the growing demand for local AI assistance while potentially offering enhanced security compared to competitors like OpenClaw, which has faced criticism for requiring elevated system permissions.

"Personal Computer takes Computer out of the cloud-only world and onto the device where most of your real work already takes place," Perplexity explained in their announcement.

The software integrates seamlessly with native Mac applications and local files, enabling cross-application functionality that wasn't previously possible. For example, users can have agents compare documents from different applications, extract notes from one program to create drafts in another, or manage complex projects involving multiple file types and platforms.

A key feature is the tool's compatibility with Perplexity's AI-powered Comet web browser, which eliminates the need for direct connectors when working with web-based tools. This integration expands the agent's capabilities beyond local applications to include web-based workflows and services.

For users with always-on devices like Mac Mini computers, Personal Computer can run continuously in the background, allowing remote access via iPhone. This feature enables users to initiate tasks or approve agent requests from their mobile devices, extending the utility beyond desktop computing sessions.

The practical applications span various professional scenarios, from spreadsheet analysis and document management to complex project coordination involving multiple materials and applications. The agent's ability to understand context and orchestrate tools across different platforms positions it as a comprehensive digital assistant for knowledge work.

While the new Mac app is freely downloadable, Personal Computer functionality requires either a Pro or Max subscription. The software is currently available only as a direct download, with no immediate plans for Mac App Store distribution.

As part of this transition, Perplexity plans to deprecate its older Mac application in the coming weeks, consolidating development efforts around the Personal Computer platform. This strategic shift reflects the company's commitment to local AI agents as the future of personal computing assistance.

The move positions Perplexity to compete directly with other local AI solutions while potentially addressing security concerns that have plagued competitors. By operating within what the company describes as a "secure development environment" on their servers, Personal Computer aims to balance local functionality with enterprise-grade security measures.

Snap terminated its $400 million deal with AI search company Perplexity during Q1, ending plans to integrate the search engine into Snapchat's Chat interface. The partnership, announced last November, would have allowed users to ask questions and receive AI-powered answers within the app.

Despite the setback, Snap reported positive Q1 results with daily active users growing 5% to 483 million and revenue growth acceleration. The company attributed success to new features and remains focused on AR eyewear investments, including upcoming announcements at AWE conference in June.

How Anthropic's Mythos has rewritten Firefox's approach to cybersecurity

Anthropic's Mythos AI discovers thousands of high-severity Firefox vulnerabilities.

When Anthropic launched its Mythos model in April, it came with a powerful warning: the AI was so effective at finding software vulnerabilities that thousands of high-severity bugs needed fixing before public release. Mozilla's Firefox security researchers are now revealing how this revolutionary tool has transformed their cybersecurity approach.

Mozilla reports that Mythos has uncovered numerous critical bugs, including vulnerabilities that had remained hidden in Firefox's code for over a decade. This represents a dramatic improvement from AI security tools available just six months ago, which typically overwhelmed teams with false positives and low-quality reports.

The impact is measurable: Firefox shipped 423 bug fixes in April 2026, compared to only 31 fixes in April 2025. The team has documented 12 significant discoveries, ranging from unusual sandbox vulnerabilities to a 15-year-old HTML parsing error.

"These things are actually just suddenly very good," said Brian Grinstead, Mozilla's distinguished engineer. The transformation occurred through two key factors: significantly more capable AI models and improved techniques for utilizing them effectively.

Particularly impressive is Mythos' ability to identify Firefox sandbox vulnerabilities, which require complex multi-step attacks to exploit. Mozilla pays up to $20,000 for such discoveries through their bug bounty program, yet Mythos finds these issues more frequently than human researchers.

Despite AI's bug-finding prowess, Mozilla still relies on human engineers for actual fixes. While AI can generate patch code, it typically serves as a model rather than deployable solution, with every fix requiring human engineering and review.

The broader cybersecurity implications remain unclear. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei believes the technology ultimately favors defenders, suggesting a finite number of bugs means eventual improvement. However, Grinstead takes a more cautious view, acknowledging that while the tools help defenders, the ultimate impact on the attacker-defender balance remains uncertain.
