The company is charging $150 per million tokens (approximately 750,000 words) for input and an eye-watering $600 per million tokens for model-generated output. These rates represent a doubling of the input cost compared to GPT-4.5 and a tenfold increase over the standard o1 model's output pricing.
The extreme pricing structure suggests OpenAI is targeting a very specific segment of enterprise customers with mission-critical applications where reliability and performance justify the significantly higher costs. "O1-pro in the API is a version of o1 that uses more computing to think harder and provide even better answers to the hardest problems," an OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch. "After getting many requests from our developer community, we're excited to bring it to the API to offer even more reliable responses."
The model is currently available only to developers who have spent at least $5 on OpenAI API services, indicating a strategy of prioritizing established customers who have already demonstrated willingness to pay for the company's technology. This approach could help OpenAI manage the computational demands of running this resource-intensive model while ensuring it's deployed for high-value use cases.

Internal OpenAI benchmarks from late 2024 suggest that o1-pro's advantages over the standard o1 model may be incremental rather than transformative.
