The o3 model employs a "private chain of thought" approach, where the AI pauses to examine its internal dialog and plan ahead before responding. This simulated reasoning (SR) capability represents a significant evolution beyond traditional large language models. The model has achieved remarkable results, including a record-breaking score on the ARC-AGI visual reasoning benchmark, with 87.5% accuracy in high-compute testing—matching human-level performance.
O3's impressive performance extends to academic tests, scoring 96.7% on the 2024 American Invitational Mathematics Exam and 87.7% on GPQA Diamond's graduate-level science questions. The model also achieved unprecedented success on the Frontier Math benchmark, solving 25.2% of problems compared to the previous ceiling of 2% by other models.

The announcement comes amid growing competition in SR model development, with Google's Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental, DeepSeek's R1, and Alibaba's QwQ all entering the field.
