OpenAI expands Stargate project with five new data centers nationwide

OpenAI is building five new Stargate data centers with Oracle and SoftBank

OpenAI has unveiled plans to significantly expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure through the construction of five new data centers across the United States, partnering with tech giants Oracle and SoftBank as part of its ambitious Stargate project.

The expansion represents a major milestone in OpenAI's quest to scale its AI capabilities, with the new facilities expected to bring the Stargate project's total capacity to an impressive 7 gigawatts of power – equivalent to the energy consumption of more than 5 million American homes.

The strategic partnership divides the development responsibilities between two major technology companies. Oracle will spearhead the construction of three facilities, with locations spanning across diverse geographic regions. These include sites in Shackelford County, Texas, and Doña Ana County, New Mexico, along with a third facility at an undisclosed location in the Midwest.

Meanwhile, SoftBank will oversee the development of the remaining two data centers. One facility is planned for Lordstown, Ohio, while the second will be established in Milam County, Texas, further strengthening the state's position as a hub for AI infrastructure development.

This massive infrastructure buildout reflects OpenAI's growing computational demands as the company continues to develop increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence models. The data centers will serve dual purposes: training next-generation AI systems and providing the computational power necessary to serve these models to users worldwide.

The announcement comes on the heels of another significant financial development for OpenAI. Just one day prior to revealing the Stargate expansion, the company announced it would receive a substantial $100 billion investment from semiconductor giant Nvidia. This investment will enable OpenAI to purchase Nvidia's cutting-edge AI processors and further expand its data center network beyond the five newly announced facilities.

The timing of these announcements underscores the intense competition in the AI infrastructure space, as companies race to secure the computational resources necessary to maintain their competitive edge. OpenAI's partnership with Oracle and SoftBank brings together complementary expertise: Oracle's enterprise cloud infrastructure experience and SoftBank's investment acumen and technology portfolio.

The geographic distribution of the new facilities appears strategically planned to optimize both operational efficiency and regulatory compliance. Texas emerges as a particularly favored location with two facilities, likely due to the state's business-friendly environment, abundant land availability, and existing technology infrastructure.

The Stargate project represents more than just an expansion of computational capacity; it signals OpenAI's commitment to maintaining its leadership position in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. As AI models become more complex and resource-intensive, having dedicated, purpose-built infrastructure becomes increasingly critical for companies seeking to push the boundaries of what's possible with artificial intelligence.

This infrastructure investment also reflects broader industry trends, as major AI companies recognize that access to sufficient computational resources often determines competitive advantage. The 7-gigawatt capacity target positions OpenAI among the largest operators of AI-specific infrastructure globally.

Alloy is bringing data management to the robotics industry

Australian startup builds data infrastructure to help robotics companies manage information.

Robotics companies face a growing challenge: robots generate massive amounts of data. Even simple robots can produce up to a terabyte of data daily through continuous capture from cameras and sensors. Sydney-based startup Alloy believes it has the solution to this mounting problem.

The Australian company is developing specialized data infrastructure to help robotics firms process and organize the vast amounts of information their machines collect. Alloy's platform encodes and labels collected data while enabling users to search through datasets using natural language to identify bugs and errors. The system also allows companies to establish rules that automatically catch and flag future issues, similar to observability tools used in software development.

"The current pattern is, you look for some kind of anomaly, and then you'll replay the data," explains Joe Harris, Alloy's founder and CEO. He notes that companies spend countless hours manually reviewing flagged data without clear visibility into whether issues are recurring problems or isolated incidents.

Harris, who has been passionate about robotics since childhood, initially pursued other tech roles at companies like Atlassian after graduating in 2018 due to limited robotics opportunities. In 2024, he decided to launch his own robotics venture, originally targeting agriculture. However, conversations with other founders consistently revealed data management as a critical pain point.

"If I need to solve this problem for myself and my robotics company, I will have a great horizontal solution," Harris reasoned. He pivoted to address this fundamental infrastructure challenge first.

Since launching in February 2025, Alloy has secured four Australian robotics companies as design partners and plans U.S. market expansion this year. The company recently raised over AUD $4.5 million (approximately $3 million) in pre-seed funding led by Blackbird Ventures, with participation from Airtree Ventures, Xtal Ventures, and Skip Capital.

Currently, most robotics companies either adapt existing data tools not designed for multimodal robot data or build internal solutions. As commercial robotics applications expand, Alloy aims to capture significant market share by eliminating the need for companies to "reinvent the wheel."
