OpenAI seeks massive $100B funding round at historic valuation
OpenAI is reportedly trying to raise $100B at an $830B valuation
The artificial intelligence powerhouse behind ChatGPT is pursuing one of the largest funding rounds in tech history. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is actively seeking to raise up to $100 billion in a funding round that could propel the company's valuation to an unprecedented $830 billion.
The ambitious fundraising effort targets completion by the end of the first quarter of 2025, with the company reportedly exploring investments from sovereign wealth funds. While The Information initially reported the deal with a $750 billion valuation, the Journal's sources suggest an even higher figure, highlighting the rapid escalation in OpenAI's perceived value.
This massive capital injection reflects OpenAI's commitment to maintaining its leadership position in the increasingly competitive AI landscape. The company faces mounting pressure from rivals including Anthropic and Google, forcing it to accelerate the development and release of new models while expanding its developer ecosystem presence.
The funding comes at a critical time as OpenAI grapples with enormous operational costs. The company is committing trillions of dollars to global deals and infrastructure investments, with inference costs alone requiring substantial cash outlays beyond what cloud partnerships and credits can cover. This suggests that OpenAI's computational demands have grown beyond traditional funding mechanisms.
Market dynamics are adding complexity to the fundraising environment. Investor sentiment around AI has begun to cool as questions emerge about the sustainability of massive debt-fueled investments by tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle. Additionally, chip supply constraints, particularly memory chip shortages, threaten to impact the broader technology sector's growth trajectory.
Despite these challenges, OpenAI's business fundamentals appear strong. The company reportedly generates approximately $20 billion in annual run-rate revenue, providing a solid foundation for its ambitious valuation targets. Current company coffers exceed $64 billion according to PitchBook data, with the most recent secondary transaction valuing the firm at around $500 billion.
The fundraising efforts are part of a broader strategic approach to capital raising. OpenAI has been exploring multiple avenues, including rumors of a potential initial public offering that could raise tens of billions more. Additionally, reports suggest the company is courting Amazon for a separate $10 billion investment that would provide access to the e-commerce giant's advanced AI computing chips.
This multi-pronged funding strategy reflects the enormous capital requirements of leading AI development. As the race to develop artificial general intelligence intensifies, companies like OpenAI must secure sufficient resources to fund research, acquire computational power, and maintain competitive advantages in an increasingly crowded market.
The success of this funding round would establish new benchmarks for private company valuations and demonstrate continued investor confidence in AI's transformative potential. However, it also raises questions about valuation sustainability and the long-term viability of such massive capital commitments in the AI sector.
OpenAI has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the reported funding discussions, leaving market observers to speculate about the timeline and ultimate success of these ambitious fundraising efforts.
AI pioneer launches AMI Labs seeking massive $3.5B valuation
Yann LeCun confirms his new 'world model' startup, reportedly seeks $5B+ valuation
Renowned AI scientist Yann LeCun has officially launched Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), appointing Alex LeBrun as CEO while serving as Executive Chairman himself. The startup reportedly seeks €500 million at a €3 billion valuation, focusing on "world model" AI technology.
Unlike traditional LLMs, world models aim to understand environments and simulate cause-and-effect scenarios to predict outcomes, potentially solving AI hallucination problems. LeBrun transitions from Nabla's CEO role, where he helped triple the company's ARR toward $1 billion annually.

Cursor continues acquisition spree with Graphite deal
AI coding assistant Cursor acquires code review startup Graphite.
AI coding assistant Cursor has announced its acquisition of Graphite, a specialized startup that leverages artificial intelligence to review and debug code. While the financial terms remain undisclosed, Axios reported that Cursor paid significantly above Graphite's previous $290 million valuation from its $52 million Series B funding round earlier this year.
The strategic acquisition addresses a common challenge in AI-generated code development. Since AI-produced code often contains bugs, engineers typically spend considerable time making corrections. Although Cursor already offers AI-powered code review through its Bugbot product, Graphite brings unique capabilities, particularly its "stacked pull request" feature that allows developers to work on multiple dependent changes simultaneously without waiting for approvals.
This combination of AI-powered code writing with sophisticated code review tools creates a streamlined development pipeline, accelerating the journey from initial code drafting to final deployment. The integration represents a logical evolution in the AI coding space, where efficiency gains come from optimizing the entire development workflow rather than individual components.
Cursor faces competition in the AI code review market from companies like CodeRabbit, which achieved a $550 million valuation in September, and smaller players such as Greptile, which secured a $25 million Series A funding round this fall.
The acquisition has strong foundational connections. Cursor CEO Michael Truell first encountered Graphite's co-founders Merrill Lutsky, Greg Foster, and Tomas Reimers through Neo's Scholar program, a prestigious initiative for college students run by Ali Partovi's venture firm Neo. Both companies also share common investors, including Accel and Andreessen Horowitz, facilitating the deal's progression.
This acquisition continues Cursor's aggressive expansion strategy. The company, valued at $29 billion in November, recently purchased Growth by Design, a tech recruiting firm, and acquired talent from AI-powered CRM startup Koala for $129 million in July, demonstrating its commitment to building a comprehensive AI development ecosystem.
