OpenAI acquires Statsig for $1.1 billion, reshuffles executive leadership team.
OpenAI acquires product testing startup Statsig and shakes up its leadership team

OpenAI has announced its largest acquisition to date, agreeing to purchase product testing startup Statsig for $1.1 billion in an all-stock deal. The acquisition brings Statsig's founder and CEO Vijaye Raji into OpenAI as the new Chief Technology Officer of Applications, marking a significant expansion of the company's product development capabilities.
The deal, valued under OpenAI's current $300 billion valuation, represents a strategic move to strengthen the company's Applications business unit. Raji will report directly to Fidji Simo, the former Instacart CEO who recently joined OpenAI to lead the Applications division. In his new role, Raji will oversee product engineering for ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI coding tool Codex, and future consumer applications the company plans to develop.
OpenAI believes that integrating Statsig's experimentation platform will significantly accelerate product development across its Applications organization. Statsig specializes in feature flagging, A/B testing, and analytics tools that help companies optimize their products through data-driven insights. By bringing these capabilities in-house, OpenAI aims to enhance its ability to rapidly iterate and improve its consumer-facing products.
The acquisition coincides with notable leadership changes within OpenAI's executive team. Kevin Weil, the company's current Chief Product Officer, is transitioning to lead a new division called OpenAI for Science. Weil announced on LinkedIn that his new organization's mission is to "build the next great scientific instrument: an AI-powered platform that accelerates scientific discovery." He will collaborate closely with Sebastien Bubeck, an OpenAI researcher and former Microsoft AI executive.
Weil expressed confidence in the transition, citing the strength of OpenAI's existing product and design leadership, now complemented by Simo's arrival as CEO of Applications. "OpenAI's products have been my life since I joined, and they're in great hands," he stated.
Additionally, Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI's current head of engineering, is moving to a new position as CTO of B2B applications. In this role, Narayanan will work directly with Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap, who manages many of the company's enterprise customer relationships. This move signals OpenAI's continued focus on expanding its business-to-business offerings alongside its consumer applications.
The Statsig acquisition is subject to regulatory review, a standard process for deals of this magnitude in the tech industry. Once approved, all Statsig employees will join OpenAI's workforce. However, the company has committed to maintaining Statsig's operational independence, with the startup continuing to serve its existing customer base from its Seattle office.
This acquisition reflects OpenAI's broader strategy to build comprehensive product development capabilities as it competes in the rapidly evolving AI market. The company has been investing heavily in both consumer and enterprise applications, seeking to capitalize on the success of ChatGPT and expand its market presence across multiple sectors.
The deal also highlights the premium valuations in the AI sector, with OpenAI paying approximately 10 times what Statsig was reportedly valued at in previous funding rounds. This significant premium underscores the strategic importance OpenAI places on acquiring proven product development expertise and tools.
For Statsig, the acquisition provides access to OpenAI's vast resources and user base, potentially accelerating the development and adoption of its experimentation platform. The startup's tools could prove invaluable as OpenAI continues to refine and expand its AI applications based on user feedback and performance data.
The restructuring and acquisition demonstrate OpenAI's evolution from a research-focused organization into a comprehensive AI company with significant commercial ambitions across multiple market segments.

Tesla shuts down Dojo AI supercomputer after six years of development.
Tesla Dojo: The rise and fall of Elon Musk’s AI supercomputer

Tesla has officially shut down Dojo, its AI supercomputer project hyped for six years as crucial to the company's autonomous driving ambitions. After promising Dojo would power Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology and robotaxis, Elon Musk reversed course in August 2025, calling it 'an evolutionary dead end.' The project aimed to reduce Tesla's reliance on expensive Nvidia chips through custom D1 processors, but never met ambitious performance targets. Tesla disbanded the team and pivoted to partnerships with Samsung for AI6 chips and expanded its Cortex supercomputer using traditional Nvidia hardware instead.

Amazon launches Lens Live, an AI-powered shopping tool for use in the real world

Amazon launches Lens Live for real-time AI-powered visual shopping experiences.
Amazon has launched Lens Live, an AI-powered enhancement to its existing Amazon Lens visual search feature that brings real-time shopping capabilities to consumers' smartphones. This new tool allows users to point their phones at items in the real world and instantly see matching or similar products available on Amazon through a swipeable carousel interface at the bottom of their screen.
Unlike the original Amazon Lens that required users to take photos, upload images, or scan barcodes, Lens Live operates in real-time, making it more convenient for shoppers who want to compare prices while browsing in physical retail stores. The feature recognizes when customers are already engaging in comparison shopping behaviors and provides them with Amazon's alternatives and pricing information on the spot.
The technology integrates seamlessly with Amazon's AI shopping assistant Rufus, offering users AI-generated product summaries and suggested conversation prompts to help them research items before purchasing. When users find products they're interested in, they can easily add items to their cart using the plus icon or save them to their wish list with the heart icon.
This launch represents another step in Amazon's broader AI strategy for enhancing the shopping experience. Over the past year, the company has introduced numerous AI-powered features including shopping guides, enhanced product reviews, clothing fit tools, audio product summaries, and personalized shopping recommendations. These innovations demonstrate Amazon's commitment to using artificial intelligence to streamline and improve the customer journey.
Lens Live is powered by Amazon SageMaker services, which enable machine learning models to operate at scale, running on AWS-managed Amazon OpenSearch infrastructure. The feature is currently available exclusively on the Amazon Shopping app for iOS devices, initially reaching tens of millions of U.S. shoppers before expanding to other American users. Amazon has not yet announced plans for international expansion to other global markets, suggesting the company is taking a measured approach to rolling out this new technology.
