OpenAI releases ChatGPT’s hyperrealistic voice to some paying users
OpenAI has begun rolling out ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode to a select group of ChatGPT Plus users, with plans to extend access to all Plus users by fall 2024. This feature, powered by GPT-4o, offers hyperrealistic audio responses with significantly lower latency than the previous voice mode.
The new system processes tasks without auxiliary models, enabling it to sense emotional intonations in users' voices. OpenAI has implemented safety measures, including extensive testing with external red teamers speaking 45 languages.
To avoid controversies, Advanced Voice Mode is limited to four preset voices created with paid voice actors. OpenAI has also introduced filters to block requests for generating music or copyrighted audio, aiming to prevent legal issues related to copyright infringement.
The company emphasizes that ChatGPT cannot impersonate individuals' voices and will block outputs differing from the preset voices. While the initial rollout doesn't include video and screensharing capabilities showcased earlier, OpenAI plans to introduce these features at a later date. Read more

The European Union's new law on artificial intelligence (AI), described as an innovative and pioneering framework, officially comes into effect today. This law prioritizes safe and ethical AI development, focusing on protecting people's rights and boosting AI innovation for European businesses. Key provisions will phase in over the next two years, with immediate bans on specific harmful AI practices. The legislation introduces a risk-based classification for AI applications, stringent controls for high-risk categories, and outright bans on certain AI uses to safeguard fundamental rights.
