OpenAI partners with AWS, offering models on Amazon's cloud for first time.
For the first time, OpenAI models are available on AWS

OpenAI has made a significant strategic move by partnering with Amazon Web Services to offer its new open-weight reasoning models, marking the first time OpenAI models will be available on AWS. The announcement came as OpenAI revealed two new reasoning models with capabilities matching its premium o-series, now accessible through AWS's Bedrock and SageMaker AI services.
This partnership represents a major competitive shift for both companies. For AWS, it finally connects the cloud giant directly with OpenAI, the industry's most prominent AI model maker. Previously, AWS was primarily known for hosting and financially backing Anthropic's Claude, one of OpenAI's main competitors, alongside models from companies like Cohere, DeepSeek, Meta, and Mistral.
The timing is particularly significant for Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who has faced mounting pressure from Wall Street analysts about AWS losing ground in the AI race to competitors, especially Microsoft. During Amazon's recent quarterly earnings call, JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth questioned the "significantly faster cloud growth among the number two and number three players," referring to Microsoft and Google. Morgan Stanley's Brian Nowak expressed Wall Street's concern that "AWS is falling behind in GenAI with concerns about share loss."
Jassy's defensive response included a pointed jab at Microsoft, noting that "the second player is about 65% of the size of AWS." However, the competitive pressure intensified when Oracle announced a massive $30 billion annual deal with OpenAI for data center services – more than all of Oracle's other cloud customers combined. This left AWS notably absent from OpenAI partnerships until now.
For OpenAI, this AWS partnership serves multiple strategic purposes. The company's relationship with Microsoft, its primary cloud partner, has become increasingly strained as both companies reportedly renegotiate their long-term partnership agreement. By establishing ties with the world's largest cloud provider, OpenAI strengthens its negotiating position and reduces dependency on Microsoft.
The partnership also provides OpenAI access to AWS's extensive enterprise customer base, allowing businesses to easily integrate OpenAI models into their hosted AI applications. This could significantly expand OpenAI's market reach beyond its current user base.
Interestingly, this move also positions OpenAI competitively against Meta's Mark Zuckerberg. While OpenAI releases these high-performing models under the permissive Apache 2.0 open source license, Meta has recently indicated it may not continue open-sourcing all future "superintelligence" models. This gives OpenAI an advantage in the open-source AI community.
The models are available for download via Hugging Face, but Amazon's offering comes with OpenAI's explicit knowledge and approval, according to OpenAI product lead Dmitry Pimenov. Amazon describes this arrangement as similar to how it previously offered DeepSeek-R1 models.
While Microsoft remains OpenAI's most significant cloud partner and continues offering optimized versions of the new models for Windows devices, this AWS partnership signals a potential shift in the AI landscape. It demonstrates OpenAI's strategy to diversify its cloud partnerships while maintaining its competitive edge.
The move represents Sam Altman's broader competitive strategy, using partnerships and open-source releases to pressure competitors across multiple fronts. By offering high-quality models through the world's largest cloud platform while maintaining an open-source approach, OpenAI positions itself as both accessible and cutting-edge.
This partnership could reshape cloud AI competition, forcing other providers to secure similar high-profile AI partnerships. For enterprises, it means greater choice in AI model deployment, potentially accelerating AI adoption across AWS's massive customer base. The collaboration marks a pivotal moment where cloud infrastructure and AI development converge, setting the stage for intensified competition in the rapidly evolving AI market.

Google launches Jules AI coding agent with tiered pricing structure.
Google’s AI coding agent Jules is now out of beta

Google officially launched Jules, its AI coding agent powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, after a successful beta phase. Jules operates asynchronously, integrating with GitHub to fix and update code while developers work on other tasks. The launch introduces tiered pricing: a free plan with 15 daily tasks, and paid plans at $19.99 and $124.99 monthly. Unlike synchronous competitors, Jules runs independently in cloud virtual machines, allowing developers to start tasks and return later. Google updated privacy policies for clarity and added features like Environment Snapshots and automatic pull requests based on beta feedback.

Tavily raises $25M to connect AI agents to the web

Tavily raises $20M to connect AI agents safely to internet
Companies across industries are rapidly implementing AI agents for internal operations, automating diverse tasks from fraud detection to customer research. In the financial sector, these agents analyze massive transaction datasets in real-time to identify fraudulent activity. Sales organizations deploy AI agents to gather comprehensive intelligence on potential customers by scanning web content and social media platforms.
For optimal performance, these agents require internet access and the ability to extract information from relevant sources while adhering to company policies and mimicking human research methodologies. However, connecting agents directly to large language models like ChatGPT without proper enterprise safeguards can produce highly problematic outcomes.
George Mathew from Insight Partners emphasizes the critical importance of governance, risk, and compliance in enterprise AI implementation, warning that unrestricted access creates a chaotic environment. This concern drove Insight Partners to lead a $20 million Series A investment in Tavily, a startup specializing in compliant web connectivity for AI agents. The funding brings the one-year-old company's total capital to $25 million.
Data scientist Rotem Weiss founded Tavily after creating GPT Researcher, an open-source project in 2023 that provided real-time web data access before ChatGPT offered internet connectivity. The consumer-focused project gained significant traction, accumulating nearly 20,000 GitHub stars. When major language models introduced web search capabilities, Weiss pivoted to launch Tavily with an enterprise focus.
Tavily provides comprehensive tools enabling companies like Groq, Cohere, MongoDB, and Writer to implement agents that search, crawl, and extract structured insights from both public and private information sources. While most AI agents currently lack internet connectivity, Weiss envisions Tavily facilitating web access for the next billion agents.
The competitive landscape includes several players offering similar solutions. Exa secured $17 million in Series A funding from Lightspeed, Nvidia, and Y Combinator, while Firecrawl provides comparable web connectivity layers. Additionally, OpenAI and Perplexity offer search solutions targeting independent developers, creating a dynamic market for AI agent web integration services.
