OpenAI unveils Prism, free AI-powered research workspace for scientists

OpenAI launches Prism, a new AI workspace for scientists

OpenAI has introduced Prism, a groundbreaking AI-enhanced workspace specifically designed for scientific research. Available free to all ChatGPT users, this innovative platform functions as both an advanced word processor and comprehensive research tool, powered by deep integration with GPT-5.2.

The platform enables researchers to assess scientific claims, refine their writing, and conduct thorough literature searches with AI assistance. However, OpenAI emphasizes that Prism isn't intended to replace human researchers but rather to accelerate their work, similar to how coding interfaces like Cursor and Windsurf have transformed software development.

"I think 2026 will be for AI and science what 2025 was for AI and software engineering," declared Kevin Weil, OpenAI's VP of Science, during the announcement. This prediction reflects the company's ambitious vision for AI's role in scientific advancement.

The timing of Prism's launch aligns with growing demand for scientific AI assistance. OpenAI reports that ChatGPT processes approximately 8.4 million weekly messages on advanced hard science topics, though the exact number from professional researchers remains unclear.

AI-assisted research is gaining significant traction in academic circles. Recent breakthroughs include AI models solving long-standing mathematical Erdos problems through sophisticated literature review and novel applications of existing techniques. While the significance of these proofs continues to spark debate, they represent early victories for AI-human collaboration in research.

A notable example emerged in December when a statistics paper utilized GPT 5.2 Pro to establish new proofs for fundamental statistical theory axioms. Human researchers primarily handled prompting and verification while the AI performed the heavy computational lifting. OpenAI praised this approach as a model for future collaborative research efforts.

"In domains with axiomatic theoretical foundations, frontier models can help explore proofs, test hypotheses, and identify connections that might otherwise take substantial human effort to uncover," OpenAI explained in their blog post.

Prism's value proposition extends beyond raw AI capabilities through thoughtful product design. The platform seamlessly integrates with LaTeX, the open-source formatting system standard in scientific publishing, while offering significantly more functionality than traditional LaTeX tools.

One standout feature leverages GPT 5.2's visual processing capabilities, allowing researchers to transform online whiteboard drawings into professional diagrams—addressing a notorious pain point in academic publishing workflows.

Perhaps most importantly, Prism offers enhanced context management that surpasses standalone AI interactions. When researchers access ChatGPT through Prism, the model gains full visibility into their entire research project, resulting in more relevant and intelligent responses tailored to their specific work.

While experienced GPT-5.2 users might achieve similar results through careful prompt engineering, OpenAI believes Prism's streamlined interface will accelerate adoption among scientific researchers who prefer focusing on their research rather than learning complex AI prompting techniques.

Weil drew parallels to the software engineering revolution, explaining that acceleration occurred due to both "amazing models and deep workflow integration." This combination approach appears central to OpenAI's strategy for scientific research transformation.

As AI continues reshaping various industries, Prism represents OpenAI's serious commitment to scientific research enhancement. By providing free access to sophisticated AI tools specifically designed for academic workflows, the company positions itself at the forefront of the next wave of AI-driven innovation in scientific discovery.

Autonomous vehicle startup Waabi raised $1 billion in Series C funding and partnered with Uber to deploy self-driving cars on its ride-hailing platform. The deal includes $750 million in venture funding and $250 million from Uber to support deploying 25,000+ robotaxis exclusively on Uber's platform.

CEO Raquel Urtasun claims Waabi's AI technology can scale across multiple verticals with a single stack, unlike competitors who struggled with similar approaches. The company uses simulation-based training through "Waabi World" rather than relying heavily on real-world data collection.

Risotto raises $10M seed to use AI to make ticketing systems easier to use

Risotto secures $10M seed funding to automate help desk operations.

Help desk automation represents a billion-dollar industry ripe for AI disruption, with startups like Risotto challenging established players such as Zendesk, ServiceNow, and Freshworks. The company announced Tuesday that it has secured $10 million in seed funding led by Bonfire Ventures, with participation from 645 Ventures, Y Combinator, Ritual Capital, and SurgePoint Capital.

Risotto's platform autonomously resolves help desk tickets by connecting ticket management systems like Jira with the complex internal tools needed for resolution. While built on third-party foundation models, CEO Aron Solberg emphasizes that their competitive advantage lies in the infrastructure layer that manages AI reliability.

"Our special sauce is the prompt libraries, the eval suites, and the thousands and thousands of real-world examples that the AI gets trained on to ensure it actually does what it's expected to do," Solberg explained to TechCrunch.

The startup has demonstrated impressive results, helping payroll company Gusto automate 60% of their support tickets. Currently focused on conventional ticketing systems, Risotto is also preparing for a more fundamental industry transformation as AI changes how help desks operate entirely.

Solberg notes that while 95% of customers still use traditional human-driven ticket resolution, newer companies are shifting toward LLM-based interfaces as the primary interaction point between humans and technology. This includes integrations with ChatGPT for Enterprise and Gemini through MCP connections.

This evolution could reshape the SaaS landscape, positioning products like Risotto as specialized tools called by central AI systems rather than standalone platforms. In this paradigm, reliability and context management become more crucial than user-friendly interfaces.

For now, Risotto addresses the immediate challenge of managing complex IT ecosystems. As Solberg points out, one customer employs four full-time staff members just to manage Jira, highlighting the ongoing need for simplified ticketing solutions even before implementing AI automation.
