OpenAI launches GPT-5, combining reasoning with speed for ChatGPT users.
OpenAI’s GPT-5 is here

OpenAI has launched GPT-5, its most advanced AI model that marks a significant evolution from traditional chatbots toward intelligent agents capable of completing complex tasks. Released Thursday, GPT-5 becomes the default model for all ChatGPT users, including free users who gain access to advanced AI reasoning capabilities for the first time.
GPT-5 represents OpenAI's first "unified" model, combining the deep reasoning abilities of the o-series with the rapid response times of the GPT series. This integration allows ChatGPT to move beyond simple question-answering to executing sophisticated tasks like generating complete software applications, managing calendars, and creating comprehensive research briefs.
The model features an intelligent real-time router that automatically determines the optimal response approach—whether to provide quick answers or take additional time to "think" through complex problems. This eliminates the need for users to manually select settings, making the platform more intuitive.
CEO Sam Altman declared GPT-5 "the best model in the world" and positioned it as a significant step toward artificial general intelligence (AGI)—AI systems that can outperform humans at most economically valuable work. The launch carries enormous expectations, given ChatGPT's explosive growth to over 700 million weekly users, representing nearly 10% of the global population.
Performance benchmarks show GPT-5 leading in several key areas while remaining competitive in others. In coding tasks, GPT-5 achieved a 74.9% success rate on SWE-bench Verified, narrowly outperforming Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.1 (74.5%) and significantly exceeding Google DeepMind's Gemini 2.5 Pro (59.6%). The model excels at "vibe coding"—creating entire software applications on demand.
On PhD-level science questions (GPQA Diamond), GPT-5 Pro scored 89.4%, surpassing Claude Opus 4.1 (80.9%) and Grok 4 Heavy (88.9%). However, on Humanity's Last Exam, GPT-5 Pro achieved 42% compared to xAI's Grok 4 Heavy at 44.4%.
A major improvement comes in accuracy and reliability. GPT-5 dramatically reduces hallucinations—false information generation—to just 4.8% compared to previous models o3 (22%) and GPT-4o (20.6%). In healthcare responses, GPT-5's hallucination rate drops to merely 1.6%, far below GPT-4o's 12.9% and o3's 15.8%. This improvement addresses a critical concern as millions seek health advice from AI systems.
Safety enhancements include reduced deceptive behavior and better discrimination between malicious users and legitimate requests. Safety research lead Alex Beutel noted that GPT-5 is more "transparent and honest," refusing unsafe requests while avoiding unnecessary rejections of harmless inquiries.
The user experience receives notable upgrades with four new personality options: Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd. These personalities automatically adapt responses without requiring specific user prompts.
Access tiers vary by subscription level. Free users get basic GPT-5 access, Plus subscribers ($20/month) receive higher usage limits, while Pro subscribers ($200/month) enjoy unlimited access plus GPT-5 Pro with enhanced computational resources. Enterprise customers gain access next week.
For developers, GPT-5 launches through OpenAI's API in three configurations—gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano—with varying reasoning capabilities. Pricing starts at $1.25 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
The launch follows OpenAI's release of gpt-oss, an open-weight model available for free download that nearly matches previous flagship models' performance while running at reduced costs.
While GPT-5 shows impressive capabilities in many domains, it performs roughly on par with competitor models in others, particularly in some agentic tasks like website navigation. The model's real-world impact will ultimately depend on how developers and users leverage its capabilities beyond benchmark performance.
GPT-5's launch represents a pivotal moment for AI development, with implications extending beyond OpenAI to influence Big Tech strategies, Wall Street investments, and technology regulation. As AI systems transition from conversational tools to capable agents, GPT-5 may define the next phase of artificial intelligence adoption across industries and applications.
Alexa+ shows promise but feels like incomplete beta in real-world testing.
First impressions of Alexa+, Amazon’s upgraded, AI-powered digital assistant

After losing everything in a house fire, I rebuilt my smart home to test if Alexa+ still deserves to be the center of connected living. Setting up the new Echo Spot was streamlined with QR code pairing, and I connected services like OpenTable and Uber. However, Alexa+ feels very much like a beta product. Calendar management worked adequately, but she interrupted conversations and sometimes misheard commands. Document summarization showed promise when processing school emails, though she missed important details. Price tracking for Amazon products had mixed results with frequent silence periods. While the AI attempts natural conversation, it's prone to mistakes and thoroughness issues, raising questions about future agentic capabilities.

Google takes on ChatGPT’s Study Mode with new ‘Guided Learning’ tool in Gemini

Google launches Guided Learning AI tutor to enhance student understanding.
As students prepare for the new school year, Google has introduced Guided Learning within Gemini, a revolutionary AI tool designed to function as a personal tutor rather than a simple answer provider. This launch comes just over a week after OpenAI introduced Study Mode for ChatGPT, highlighting a significant shift in how tech companies are positioning their AI chatbots in educational settings.
Both Google and OpenAI are responding to growing concerns that traditional AI chatbots may undermine genuine learning by providing direct answers without fostering understanding. Instead of simply delivering solutions, these new tools are specifically designed to help users develop critical thinking skills and build deep comprehension of complex subjects.
Guided Learning takes a comprehensive approach to education by breaking down problems into manageable steps and adapting explanations to individual user needs. The feature utilizes a rich multimedia approach, incorporating images, diagrams, videos, and interactive quizzes to help students not only learn concepts but also test their knowledge retention. This method focuses on helping users understand the fundamental 'why' and 'how' behind various concepts.
According to Maureen Heymans, Google's VP of Learning & Sustainability, Guided Learning serves as a collaborative thinking partner for diverse learning scenarios, whether students are preparing for science exams, drafting academic papers, or exploring personal interests like photography. The tool adapts to each learning journey, providing step-by-step guidance throughout the process.
Beyond Guided Learning, Google is enhancing Gemini's overall educational capabilities. The platform now automatically integrates visual aids including images, diagrams, and YouTube videos directly into responses, making complex topics more accessible and understandable. Additionally, users can request custom flashcards and study guides based on quiz results or classroom materials.
To make these advanced learning tools more accessible, Google announced a generous offer for students in the United States, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil: a free one-year subscription to the AI Pro plan. This subscription provides expanded access to cutting-edge features including Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, and Deep Research capabilities, giving students powerful tools to enhance their educational experience.
