OpenAI has answered one of its most persistent user requests, releasing a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux. The launch, announced on Tuesday, makes ChatGPT available across every major desktop operating system for the first time.

The app is currently available in preview and gives Linux users access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. OpenAI confirmed the release is global, rolling out simultaneously across supported distributions worldwide.

In terms of supported distributions, OpenAI has chosen to back desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. While the broader Linux ecosystem encompasses hundreds of distributions, the ones selected by OpenAI serve as the foundation for many "downstream" distros and flavors, meaning a wider range of Linux users should be able to run the app even if their specific distribution isn't explicitly listed.

"Linux has been one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system," OpenAI said in its announcement. The move signals that the company is taking the open source developer community more seriously as a key audience.

That said, OpenAI is not the first AI company to bring a desktop app to Linux. Rival Anthropic beat them to it by roughly a month, releasing its Claude desktop app for Linux with support for Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later. Despite arriving second, OpenAI's broader distro support and the addition of Codex — its AI-powered coding tool — may give it an edge with developers in the Linux community.

General Catalyst leads $1.1B round into 2-month-old River AI

River AI, an AI startup barely two months old, has raised $1.1 billion in a seed/Series A round led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC — an AI-focused investment firm founded in 2026 by former Andreessen Horowitz general partner Anjney Midha. Additional investors include Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek, making it one of the largest early-stage rounds in recent memory.

The company was founded by Igor Babuschkin, a veteran of DeepMind, OpenAI, and xAI. River came out of stealth in June with an ambitious goal: to reinvent AI from the ground up, starting with how models are trained. Rather than building AI that replaces human workers, Babuschkin wants to create agents that are personally trainable and work exclusively on behalf of their individual users. "They will know you well, and they will be yours, not someone else's," he wrote in his launch blog, describing a vision of AI as a "guardian angel" quietly present in everyday life.

River's first product is an API that lets developers fine-tune open-weight models using reinforcement learning and low-rank adaptation, billed per million tokens. The pitch is a direct challenge to prompt engineering: rather than steering a model you don't own, River lets users train open models into ones they fully control and serve like any standard endpoint. For enterprises, the company claims complex reinforcement learning runs can be completed in 15 to 20 minutes with no infrastructure team, at two to four times the cost savings compared to closed-source alternatives.

The funding round is a striking signal of investor appetite, even by the inflated standards of today's AI market. River's broader premise — that everyone will eventually have their own trained, personal agents — aligns with emerging trends like locally running AI and hardware partnerships between Nvidia and PC makers. How River's technology will ultimately differentiate itself remains to be seen, but it enters the race with substantial resources and a clear, contrarian point of view.
