OpenAI just made its first cybersecurity investment

Brian Long, CEO of Adaptive Security, which just secured $43M from OpenAI and a16z
OpenAI has co-led a $43 million Series A round in Adaptive Security—marking its first cybersecurity investment. Alongside Andreessen Horowitz, the deal reflects OpenAI's growing urgency to counter AI-powered threats stemming from its own generative models.
Adaptive Security simulates AI-generated phishing attempts and deepfake attacks to train organizations against social engineering. Its platform mimics spoofed calls, texts, and emails, flagging vulnerable departments and employees. CEO Brian Long calls it an "arms race" against malicious actors.
Founded in 2023, Adaptive has over 100 customers and plans to use the funding to expand engineering and improve simulations. The company targets the weakest link in security: human behavior. Its realism-focused approach helps organizations build resilience beyond technical defenses.
As AI tools lower the barrier for personalized phishing, deepfakes, and cloned voices, OpenAI’s move signals awareness of its dual-use technology. This investment is also a broader strategic step—supporting tools that mitigate harms tied to generative AI while reinforcing responsible innovation.
Adaptive joins a growing ecosystem of AI security startups like Cyberhaven, GetReal, and Snyk. But its strength lies in training the human layer—through controlled exposure to evolving threats. One practical tip from Long? Delete your voicemail. It's a goldmine for voice spoofing models.
For OpenAI, this may be more than a financial play—it's a signal that as AI grows more powerful, accountability must scale with it. Investing in security is fast becoming essential to sustaining trust in the AI age.

⚡ The companies of the future
Intel and TSMC are reportedly launching a joint chipmaking venture

Intel and TSMC Joint Venture
Intel and TSMC are reportedly forming a joint venture to operate Intel's chipmaking facilities, with TSMC taking a 20% stake in the partnership.
Instead of providing capital, TSMC will contribute by sharing its chipmaking expertise and training Intel employees. The discussions were reportedly facilitated by the Trump administration to support Intel's turnaround efforts, as company executives have expressed concerns about potential mass layoffs.
This development comes shortly after Lip-Bu Tan was appointed as Intel's new CEO with plans to implement significant changes at the company. When contacted, TSMC declined to comment, while Intel has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Why it matters: The partnership could mark a turning point in U.S. chip manufacturing, combining Intel’s infrastructure with TSMC’s world-class process expertise to regain competitiveness in the global semiconductor race.

Kindle Adds AI-Generated Recaps to Help Readers Catch Up on Book Series

Amazon’s new AI-powered Kindle Recaps
The details:
Amazon has launched a new "Recaps" feature for Kindle, designed to help readers remember key plot points and character developments before starting the latest installment in a book series. While Amazon's initial press release didn't mention artificial intelligence, the company confirmed to TechCrunch that these summaries are indeed AI-generated.
"We use technology, including GenAI and Amazon moderators, to create short recaps of books that accurately reflect book content," explained Amazon spokesperson Ale Iraheta in an emailed statement.
The new feature has sparked discussion among users on Reddit, with some expressing concerns about the accuracy of AI-generated summaries. Although Amazon asserts that it ensures content accuracy, TechCrunch has requested additional details about the quality control process.
Currently, the feature is available to Kindle device users in the United States for thousands of best-selling English-language e-book series, with plans to expand to the Kindle iOS app soon. To access recaps, users must have the latest Kindle software installed on their devices.
Finding recaps is straightforward—users can look for the "View Recaps" button on series pages in their Kindle Library or access it through the three-dot menu within series groupings. Before displaying the recap, Kindle provides a spoiler warning, alerting readers that the summary contains information about major plot points and characters.
"By adding a new level of convenience to series reading, the Recaps feature enables readers to dive deeper into complex worlds and characters without losing the joy of discovery, all while ensuring an uninterrupted reading experience across every genre," Amazon stated in its blog post announcing the feature.
What makes this crucial: This marks Amazon's latest move to integrate AI into its reading platform, offering convenience for readers who struggle to remember past plotlines, while also raising new questions about content quality and the evolving role of AI in storytelling.
