OpenAI reportedly developing smartphone with AI agents instead of traditional apps

OpenAI could be making a phone with AI agents replacing apps

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed new details about OpenAI's potential entry into the smartphone market, suggesting the AI giant may be developing a revolutionary device that could fundamentally change how we interact with mobile technology.

According to Kuo, who has a strong track record reporting on Apple hardware developments, OpenAI is collaborating with major tech companies to create this ambitious project. The partnership involves MediaTek and Qualcomm for smartphone chip development, while Luxshare would serve as both co-design and manufacturing partner.

What makes this potential smartphone truly groundbreaking is its proposed departure from traditional mobile applications. Instead of relying on the conventional app ecosystem, the device would utilize AI agents to handle various tasks and functions. This approach could address current limitations that Apple and Google impose on app developers through their control over app pipelines and system access restrictions.

By creating its own hardware stack and smartphone platform, OpenAI would gain unprecedented freedom to implement AI features without the constraints typically faced by third-party developers. This control could enable more sophisticated AI integrations and functionality that current smartphone ecosystems don't allow.

The timing appears strategic for OpenAI, as ChatGPT approaches nearly one billion weekly users. A consumer hardware product designed for daily use could significantly expand the company's reach and provide new opportunities to engage with users beyond software applications.

OpenAI isn't alone in envisioning an app-free future. This concept is gaining traction across the tech industry, with Nothing CEO Carl Pei recently stating at SXSW that traditional apps will eventually become obsolete. Various coding app developers are also predicting a similar transformation in how we interact with digital services.

Kuo believes the proposed OpenAI smartphone would be engineered for continuous contextual understanding of users' behaviors and needs. This approach would provide the company with far more comprehensive data about user habits than what's typically accessible through standalone applications on existing platforms.

The technical architecture would reportedly combine small on-device AI models with cloud-based processing systems. This hybrid approach would allow the smartphone to handle different types of requests and tasks efficiently, balancing performance with privacy considerations.

Regarding timeline, Kuo expects the smartphone's final specifications and component suppliers to be determined by late 2026 or early 2027. Mass production would then commence in 2028, suggesting consumers might see this device available within the next few years.

These smartphone rumors align with earlier reports about OpenAI's hardware ambitions. Earlier this year, Chris Lehane, OpenAI's Chief Global Affairs Officer, indicated the company planned to announce its first hardware product in the second half of 2026. Initial speculation focused on specially designed earbuds, but these new reports suggest OpenAI's hardware strategy may be more comprehensive than previously understood.

The potential smartphone represents a significant shift in the mobile technology landscape. If successful, it could challenge the duopoly that Apple and Google currently maintain over smartphone operating systems and app distribution, while pioneering new ways for AI to enhance mobile computing experiences.

OpenAI has not provided official comments regarding these smartphone development reports, leaving many details about the project's scope and timeline open to speculation.

David Silver, former DeepMind researcher and creator of AlphaZero, has raised $1.1 billion for his startup Ineffable Intelligence at a $5.1 billion valuation. The British AI lab aims to build a "superlearner" that discovers knowledge through reinforcement learning without human data.

Led by Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed, the funding round included Google, Nvidia, and UK sovereign funds. Silver joins other AI researchers raising massive "coconut rounds," signaling London's emergence as a major AI hub alongside several former DeepMind alumni ventures.

Investors back Skye's AI home screen app for iPhone ahead of launch

Skye raises $3.58M for AI-powered iPhone homescreen with widget interface.

Skye, a startup developing an AI-powered iPhone homescreen app, has secured significant investor interest and user demand even before its public launch. The company, operating under Signull Labs, raised over $3.58 million in pre-seed funding with a post-money valuation of $19.5 million.

The app aims to revolutionize smartphone AI interaction by creating an "agentic homescreen" that uses iOS widgets as its primary interface. Instead of opening separate apps or chatbots, Skye provides ambient intelligence directly on the homescreen, offering personalized insights about weather, health, and context-aware information.

Key features include drafting email replies, meeting preparation assistance, sending reminders, and flagging suspicious bank charges. The app also provides location-specific recommendations and detailed information about local businesses, neighborhoods, and attractions. All data integration requires user authorization and permission.

The startup's founder, identified through SEC filings as Nirav Savjani (known online as signüll), previously worked at Google and Meta. Since announcing the project on social media, the app has attracted tens of thousands of users to its waitlist, indicating strong consumer appetite for AI-enhanced iPhone experiences.

Notable investors backing Skye include Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), True Ventures, SV Angel, and Offline Ventures, among others. The significant funding round closed in September 2025, demonstrating investor confidence in the concept of ambient AI integration on mobile devices.

Savjani has maintained relative anonymity, appearing on podcasts as an avatar and posting updates about the app's development on social media. While he declined to provide specific launch dates, he confirmed that Skye plans to launch soon for its waitlisted users. The strong pre-launch interest suggests potential market demand for more sophisticated AI integration in smartphones, possibly paving the way for future AI-focused devices.
