OpenAI launches budget ChatGPT Go across 16 Asian markets

OpenAI's affordable ChatGPT Go plan expands to 16 new countries in Asia

OpenAI has significantly expanded its affordable ChatGPT Go subscription plan to 16 additional Asian countries, marking a major push to capture market share in high-growth regions. The sub-$5 plan is now accessible in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, East Timor, and Vietnam.

To make the service more accessible, OpenAI is accepting payments in local currencies across five key markets: Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Pakistan. Users in other countries can subscribe for approximately $5 USD, with final pricing adjusted for local taxation.

The ChatGPT Go plan offers substantial improvements over the free version, including higher daily limits for messaging, image generation, and file uploads. Subscribers also receive double the memory capacity, enabling more personalized and contextual conversations with the AI assistant.

This expansion follows impressive growth metrics in Southeast Asia, where OpenAI reports up to four-fold increases in weekly active users. The company initially launched ChatGPT Go in India in August, followed by Indonesia in September. The results have been encouraging, with paid subscribers in India doubling since the plan's introduction.

The timing reflects intensifying competition with Google in the affordable AI space. Google recently launched its similarly priced AI Plus plan in Indonesia before expanding to over 40 countries. Google's offering includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, advanced creative tools like Flow for design, Whisk for image remixing, and Veo 3 Fast for video creation, plus 200GB of cloud storage.

OpenAI's expansion comes during a transformative period for the company. At this week's DevDay 2025 conference in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman announced that ChatGPT now serves 800 million weekly active users globally, up from 700 million in August. The company also revealed a significant platform evolution, introducing integrated apps that transform ChatGPT into an ecosystem resembling an app store.

"The evolution we're trying to make over the next few years is one where ChatGPT itself is more like an operating system where you can come and use applications," explained Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT. The platform now features partnerships with major brands including Spotify, Zillow, and Coursera, offering specialized applications for writing, coding, and interacting with various goods and services.

Despite impressive user growth and a recent $500 billion valuation, OpenAI faces financial challenges, reporting a $7.8 billion operating loss in the first half of 2025. The company continues heavy investment in AI infrastructure development, making affordable subscription tiers like ChatGPT Go crucial for achieving profitability.

The Asian market represents a strategic priority for OpenAI as it seeks to expand its global footprint while competing with established tech giants. These affordable plans are designed to capture price-sensitive users in emerging markets, potentially converting them to higher-tier subscriptions over time. The success of this strategy will be critical as OpenAI works to balance rapid growth with financial sustainability in an increasingly competitive AI landscape.

Google introduces open extension platform for Gemini CLI tool

Google launches extensions system for its command-line coding tool

Google has launched Gemini CLI Extensions, enabling third-party companies to integrate with its AI command-line tool. Initial extensions come from Figma and Stripe, with more available through public GitHub repositories.

Unlike OpenAI's curated ChatGPT apps, Google's system operates as an open ecosystem requiring no company approval. The platform serves over one million users, primarily software developers, and aims to transform Gemini CLI into an extensibility platform connecting various development tools and workflows.

Google's virtual try-on shopping tool expands to more countries, now lets you try on shoes

Google expands AI virtual try-on feature to shoes and three new countries.

Google announced on Wednesday a significant expansion of its AI-powered virtual try-on shopping feature, bringing the technology to Australia, Canada, and Japan while introducing the ability to virtually try on shoes for the first time.

The enhanced feature allows users to upload their own photos to see how real clothing and footwear might look on them. To try on shoes virtually, shoppers simply tap on any product listing on Google, select the "Try It On" button, and upload a full-length photo of themselves. Within seconds, they can see how the shoes appear on a digital version of their body, with options to save or share the resulting image.

This shoe try-on capability represents a notable advancement from Google's virtual try-on launch just two months ago, which initially focused on clothing. The original feature marked a shift from Google's previous approach of showing items on diverse models to letting users see products on virtual versions of their own bodies.

Google has been making broader investments in virtual try-on technology beyond this main feature. In June, the company launched Doppl, an experimental app that uses similar generative AI technology to help users visualize different outfits and curate their personal style. Doppl goes further by creating AI-generated videos, giving shoppers a more dynamic view of how outfits would look in real life.

The virtual try-on space has become increasingly competitive, with major retailers like Amazon and Walmart also introducing similar AI-powered features. This technology aims to bridge the gap between online and in-store shopping experiences by helping customers make more confident purchasing decisions without physically trying on items.

Google's expansion demonstrates the growing importance of AI-enhanced shopping tools in e-commerce, as companies seek to reduce return rates and improve customer satisfaction in online retail.
