OpenAI launches dedicated health chatbot for 230 million weekly users

OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Health, says 230 million users ask about health each week

OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Health, a specialized platform designed to create a dedicated environment for health-related conversations with artificial intelligence. The announcement comes as the company reveals that more than 230 million users weekly seek health and wellness guidance through their existing ChatGPT platform.

The new service addresses a growing demand for accessible health information by creating a separate space for medical discussions, ensuring these conversations remain isolated from users' general ChatGPT interactions. This compartmentalization means that sensitive health information won't accidentally surface during routine conversations with the AI assistant.

One of the key features of ChatGPT Health is its intelligent conversation routing system. When users begin health-related discussions outside the dedicated Health section, the AI will automatically suggest migrating the conversation to the appropriate space. However, the system maintains contextual awareness across platforms - if a user discusses marathon training in regular ChatGPT, the Health version will understand their running background when addressing fitness-related queries.

The platform's integration capabilities represent a significant step forward in personalized health AI. ChatGPT Health can connect with popular wellness applications including Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal, allowing it to access personal health data and medical records for more tailored responses. OpenAI has committed to protecting user privacy by pledging not to use Health conversations for model training purposes.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications, positioned ChatGPT Health as a solution to persistent healthcare system challenges. In her blog post, she highlighted common issues such as high medical costs, limited access to healthcare services, overbooked physician schedules, and fragmented care continuity that plague modern healthcare delivery.

Despite these ambitious goals, the launch raises significant concerns about AI-powered medical advice. Large language models like ChatGPT operate on probability-based predictions rather than factual accuracy, generating responses based on statistical likelihood rather than medical truth. These systems lack inherent understanding of what constitutes accurate medical information and are susceptible to generating false or misleading content, known as AI hallucinations.

The limitations are clearly acknowledged in OpenAI's own legal documentation. Their terms of service explicitly state that the platform is "not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition," creating a notable disconnect between the service's capabilities and its intended medical applications.

This disclaimer highlights the complex ethical and practical challenges surrounding AI in healthcare. While ChatGPT Health may provide valuable general wellness information and help users organize their health thoughts, it cannot replace professional medical diagnosis, treatment recommendations, or emergency medical care.

The timing of this launch reflects the broader trend of AI integration into healthcare services, as technology companies seek to address accessibility gaps in medical care. However, medical professionals and regulatory bodies continue to emphasize the importance of human oversight in healthcare decisions.

ChatGPT Health is scheduled to become available to users over the coming weeks, marking OpenAI's most significant venture into specialized healthcare AI services. The rollout will likely be closely monitored by healthcare professionals, regulators, and patient advocacy groups concerned about the implications of AI-powered health guidance.

As the platform launches, users will need to navigate the balance between convenient health information access and the critical importance of professional medical care for serious health concerns.

Anthropic is reportedly raising $10 billion at a $350 billion valuation, nearly doubling its value from three months ago when it secured $13 billion at $183 billion. Coatue Management and Singapore's GIC will lead the round, expected to close within weeks.

This funding is separate from the $15 billion commitment by Nvidia and Microsoft. The fresh capital comes as Anthropic gains traction with Claude Code and prepares for a potential IPO alongside rival OpenAI, which is raising up to $100 billion at an $830 billion valuation.
