And more: AI Is Coming for Big Tech Jobs; Gates invests 1 bil USD in AI

Good morning, aspiring leaders of the next-gen! ☀️

🚀 Here’s what’s going on today in the AI space…

Meta pauses plans to train AI using European users’ data, bowing to regulatory pressure: In response to concerns from the Irish Data Protection Commission and the U.K.'s Information Commissioner’s Office, Meta has halted its plans to use European user data to train its AI systems. This decision underscores tech companies' challenges when aligning their data usage practices with Europe's stringent GDPR regulations. Despite Meta's intent to enhance AI capabilities using user-generated content, the pushback highlights ongoing privacy debates and the need for clear consent mechanisms in the utilization of personal data for AI training.

Tempus rises 9% on the first day of trading, demonstrating investor appetite for a health tech with a promise of AI: Despite its unprofitability, Tempus, a genomic testing and data analysis company, saw a significant first-day stock price increase. This demonstrates a strong investor interest in health technology firms integrating AI into their operations. Tempus aims to enhance its diagnostic tools with AI technology, reflecting a broader trend of tech integration across the health sector.

AI Is Coming for Big Tech Jobs—but Not in the Way You Think: Big tech companies are not yet replacing workers with AI, but they are restructuring and laying off thousands of employees in the pursuit of advancing AI technology. This trend is impacting major firms like Microsoft, Google, and Meta, where shifts towards AI innovation are leading to significant workforce changes, despite these companies' overall growth and profit.

I think we should all be very worried about what the internet is doing to human relationships, human thought, and our ability to think.

Noam Chomsky

Noam Chomsky was an intellectual prodigy who went on to earn a PhD in linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania. Since 1955, he has been a professor at MIT and has produced groundbreaking, controversial theories on human linguistic capacity. Chomsky is widely published, both on topics in his field and on issues of dissent and U.S. foreign policy.

Demystifying AI: A Simple Explanation of Large Language Models

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a ubiquitous topic of discussion, permeating conversations across various fields. People debate its implications, ethical considerations, and potential benefits and drawbacks. However, these discussions often overlook a fundamental aspect: how AI works, particularly large language models (LLMs). The intricacies can seem overwhelming, but the core principle driving today's AI advancements is surprisingly straightforward.

The Cooking Analogy

Imagine you’re preparing a meal but need one more side dish to make it complete. The dish should complement the existing meal—if it's savory, the side should be too; if there’s already a salad, another salad isn’t necessary; and if the meal is heavy on starch, a roasted vegetable might be ideal. Now, envision an app that could suggest the perfect side dish based on what you’re already cooking. This app wouldn’t suggest dishes randomly but would consider the existing components to provide an optimal addition.

To create such an app, we need to tackle two main steps:

  1. Modeling Meals as Data: Computers don’t have taste buds, so we must encode the concept of meals into data.

  2. Learning Patterns: The app must learn to generate a new dish that complements any given set of dishes, even if it has never encountered that particular combination before.

Step One: Modeling Meals

To teach a computer about meals, we don’t feed it direct information about taste or ingredients. Instead, we provide extensive data on which dishes are commonly paired together. For instance, a Caesar salad and a Caprese salad are both Italian and contain vegetables and cheese, making them similar. Computers learn this similarity not by the ingredients but by observing that these dishes often appear alongside other Italian dishes and rarely with other salads.

By examining patterns in a vast dataset, the computer can place similar dishes close together in a conceptual space—let’s call it “meal-space.” Over time, dishes that are often paired together move closer in this space. This process creates a map where similar foods cluster together, while dissimilar foods are spaced far apart.

Interestingly, this placement isn't random. Foods with common characteristics (like containing bread or being salty) are positioned logically relative to each other. This structured mapping allows for “food arithmetic,” where the coordinates of different foods can be manipulated to predict new combinations. For example, subtracting the coordinates of a tortilla from a burrito and adding the coordinates of rice might place you near a burrito bowl in this conceptual space.

Step Two: Learning Patterns

With meal-space established, we can now teach our model to find patterns in complete meals. By examining countless examples, the model learns to predict the best additional dish based on the existing components of a meal. It generalizes from coordinates in meal-space to suggest an optimal dish that fits well with the given meal.

Words Instead of Recipes

This meal-planning analogy translates directly to understanding LLMs. Replace meals with sentences and dishes with words. LLMs learn relationships between words by examining their co-occurrence in vast amounts of text data, akin to how the meal-planning app learned from dish pairings.

In AI terms, this space is called “vector-space.” Words are categorized based on the company they keep, and their relationships are mapped out in this multi-dimensional space. When generating text, the model predicts the next word by finding patterns in vector-space. For example, given the prompt "Tell me you love me," the model determines that "I" is likely to follow, then "love," and so on, constructing coherent sentences.

Conclusion

Despite the sophisticated capabilities of AI, the fundamental principles are not overly complex. By understanding how AI models relationships and patterns, we can demystify the technology and appreciate its transformative potential.
