Nvidia commits $100B to OpenAI infrastructure partnership deal

Nvidia plans to invest up to $100B in OpenAI

title image

In a groundbreaking move that could reshape the artificial intelligence landscape, Nvidia has announced its intention to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI through a comprehensive infrastructure partnership. The tech giants revealed Monday they have signed a letter of intent focused on building massive data centers specifically designed for training and operating advanced AI models.

The partnership centers around deploying an unprecedented 10 gigawatts worth of Nvidia computing systems – equivalent to the power consumption of millions of homes – to support OpenAI's next-generation AI infrastructure development. This massive scale underscores the enormous computational requirements needed to develop cutting-edge artificial intelligence systems.

This strategic alliance arrives at a crucial time for OpenAI as the company works to diversify its technological partnerships and reduce its heavy dependence on Microsoft. While Microsoft remains OpenAI's largest investor and primary cloud computing provider, the ChatGPT creator has been actively seeking to broaden its infrastructure options since January, when Microsoft adjusted their partnership terms to allow OpenAI greater flexibility in working with other partners.

Since gaining this increased autonomy, OpenAI has been aggressive in forming new strategic partnerships for AI data center projects. The company has already collaborated with various industry players on initiatives like the ambitious Stargate project, demonstrating its commitment to building a more diverse and robust infrastructure ecosystem.

Nvidia emphasized that this new partnership is designed to complement, rather than compete with, OpenAI's existing relationships. The arrangement will work alongside OpenAI's current agreements with major technology companies including Microsoft, Oracle, and SoftBank, creating a comprehensive network of infrastructure support.

Under the terms of this arrangement, OpenAI will treat Nvidia as its "preferred strategic compute and networking partner" for what the company calls its "AI factory growth" initiative. This designation suggests a deep, long-term relationship that goes beyond simple hardware procurement to encompass strategic planning and development of future AI capabilities.

The investment structure remains flexible, with details about the exact payment mechanism still being finalized. Nvidia's $100 billion commitment could potentially be delivered through various forms including hardware chips, cloud computing credits, direct cash investment, or a combination of these approaches. This flexibility allows both companies to adapt the partnership based on OpenAI's evolving needs and market conditions.

This partnership represents a significant escalation in the AI infrastructure arms race, as companies compete to build the computational power necessary for developing increasingly sophisticated AI systems. The 10-gigawatt commitment demonstrates the massive scale required for training future AI models that could surpass current capabilities.

For Nvidia, this investment represents a major bet on OpenAI's continued leadership in artificial intelligence development. The partnership provides Nvidia with a guaranteed customer for its high-end computing systems while positioning the company at the center of the most advanced AI development projects.

The timing of this announcement reflects the growing recognition that AI development requires unprecedented computational resources and infrastructure investments. As AI models become more complex and capable, the infrastructure demands continue to grow exponentially, making partnerships like this essential for maintaining competitive advantage in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector.

After India, OpenAI launches its affordable ChatGPT Go plan in Indonesia

OpenAI expands budget ChatGPT Go plan to Indonesia after India success.

OpenAI is continuing its international expansion of affordable AI services by launching its ChatGPT Go subscription plan in Indonesia. Following the successful rollout in India last month, the company is now offering the same budget-friendly plan to Indonesian users for Rp75,000 ($4.50) per month.

The ChatGPT Go plan represents a strategic middle ground in OpenAI's subscription offerings, positioned between the free version and the premium $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus plan. This mid-tier option provides users with significantly enhanced capabilities, including 10 times higher usage limits compared to the free plan for sending questions, generating images, and uploading files.

One of the key features that sets ChatGPT Go apart is its improved memory functionality, allowing the AI to better remember previous conversations and deliver more personalized responses over time. According to ChatGPT head Nick Turley, this enhanced continuity creates a more tailored user experience that adapts to individual preferences and conversation patterns.

The impact of the ChatGPT Go plan has already proven substantial in its initial market. Turley revealed that since launching the plan in India, OpenAI has witnessed more than double the number of paid subscribers, demonstrating strong demand for affordable AI services in emerging markets.

This expansion puts OpenAI in direct competition with Google, which recently launched its own competitively-priced AI Plus subscription plan in Indonesia earlier this month. Google's offering provides access to its Gemini 2.5 Pro chatbot and includes creative tools like Flow, Whisk, and Veo 3 Fast for image and video creation. The Google plan also enhances NotebookLM research capabilities, integrates AI features into Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, and includes 200GB of cloud storage.

The simultaneous launch of both companies' affordable AI plans in Indonesia highlights the growing importance of Southeast Asian markets in the global AI competition, as tech giants recognize the potential of price-sensitive regions for expanding their user base.
