Nvidia invests $5B in Intel for AI chip partnership

Nvidia buys $5B stake in Intel, planning AI chip collaboration

In a major industry shake-up, Nvidia has agreed to purchase a $5 billion stake in Intel, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at developing next-generation AI and computing products across multiple product lines.

The deal sees Nvidia acquiring Intel shares at $23.28 each, representing a modest discount from previous trading prices. This investment positions Nvidia as one of Intel's largest shareholders, controlling approximately 4% of the company. Intel's stock surged by as much as 30% in early Thursday trading following the announcement.

At the heart of this collaboration lies the integration of both companies' architectures through Nvidia's advanced NVLink interface technology. This connection method facilitates rapid data and control transfers between central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs), delivering significantly faster performance than traditional standards like PCI Express. This enhanced speed is particularly critical for AI applications that demand coordinated processing across multiple GPUs to handle massive computational workloads.

The partnership encompasses two major market segments. For enterprise data centers, Intel will manufacture a specialized line of x86 processors specifically optimized for Nvidia's AI infrastructure platforms. These custom CPUs will target enterprise clients and hyperscale cloud providers seeking enhanced AI processing capabilities.

In the consumer market, Intel plans to develop innovative x86 system-on-chips that integrate Nvidia's RTX GPU chiplets directly into the processor design. Currently dubbed "x86 RTX SoCs," these hybrid chips promise to deliver superior performance across a broad spectrum of personal computers, potentially giving Intel a competitive advantage over rival AMD's processor offerings.

This strategic alliance comes at a crucial time for Intel, which has faced significant challenges in recent years. The company has struggled to capitalize on the explosive growth in AI chip demand, unlike its new partner Nvidia. Intel's difficulties led to major organizational changes, including the appointment of a new CEO, substantial workforce reductions aimed at improving profit margins, and the cancellation of various manufacturing projects to focus on financial stability.

The timing contrasts sharply with Nvidia's trajectory. The graphics chip giant has experienced another record-breaking quarter, establishing itself as the world's most profitable semiconductor company and ranking among the largest corporations globally by market capitalization. While Nvidia has thrived during the AI boom, Intel has struggled to adapt to rapidly changing market demands, particularly the intense semiconductor requirements driven by artificial intelligence applications.

This collaboration could serve as Intel's pathway to regaining market share from competitors like AMD. By leveraging Nvidia's AI expertise and advanced GPU technology, Intel aims to strengthen its position in both data center and consumer markets.

"Intel's leading data center and client computing platforms, combined with our process technology, manufacturing and advanced packaging capabilities, will complement NVIDIA's AI and accelerated computing leadership to enable new breakthroughs for the industry," stated Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan.

The partnership represents a significant shift in the semiconductor landscape, bringing together Intel's manufacturing expertise and established x86 architecture with Nvidia's cutting-edge AI and GPU technologies. This combination could potentially reshape both companies' competitive positions in the rapidly evolving AI-driven computing market.

Google announced Thursday that users can now share their custom Gemini Gems - specialized AI assistants designed for specific tasks. Originally exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers, Gems include premade options like learning coaches, brainstorming partners, and coding assistants.

The sharing feature works similarly to Google Drive, allowing users to share Gems with friends, family, or colleagues. This prevents duplicate work and ensures consistency across teams. Users can control viewing, usage, and editing permissions through the Gem manager's share icon.

Notion launches agents for data analysis and task automation

Notion introduces AI agents for automated data analysis and task management.

At the "Make with Notion" event on Thursday, the productivity platform unveiled its first AI agent, marking a significant step forward in workplace automation. The new agent leverages all of a user's Notion pages and databases as context to automatically generate meeting notes, competitor evaluation reports, and feedback landing pages.

The agent goes beyond simple content creation by actively managing workspace data. It can create new pages and databases or update existing ones with fresh data, properties, and views. Users can also trigger Notion agents from external platforms connected to the service, such as creating bug-tracking dashboards using information from Slack, email, and Google Drive.

This new functionality builds upon Notion AI, the company's existing feature for searching and summarizing content. However, the agent represents a major upgrade, capable of handling complex multistep tasks through agentic AI technology. The current version can execute tasks running up to 20 minutes across hundreds of pages.

Users can customize their agent experience through a "profile" page that provides specific instructions for referencing sources, output style, and task completion locations. The agent can also "remember" key points from interactions, storing these memories on the profile page where users can edit them as needed.

Demo videos showcased various applications, including providing feedback for landing pages, creating restaurant trackers, analyzing meeting notes, and preparing competitive analysis reports. While these actions currently require manual triggering, Notion plans to introduce customized agents that operate on schedules or automatic triggers.

The company also announced plans for a template library featuring ready-made prompts for common tasks. This launch follows Notion's recent expansion into calendar apps, Gmail clients, meeting note-takers, and enterprise search tools, creating the contextual foundation necessary for advanced automation capabilities.
