Nothing introduces Playground AI for creating widget apps with prompts
Nothing launches AI tool for building mini apps using prompts

Smartphone manufacturer Nothing has unveiled Playground, an AI-powered development tool that enables users to create mini-apps through simple text commands. The tool deploys these applications to Nothing's Essential Apps platform, marking the company's latest push into AI-driven software development.
Currently, Playground focuses exclusively on widget creation, allowing users to build applications like flight trackers, meeting briefings, and virtual pets from scratch using natural language prompts. Users can also customize existing apps within the Essential Apps ecosystem or modify underlying code for more precise functionality. However, Nothing has clarified that full-screen app development isn't available yet due to technological limitations.
This launch follows Nothing's recent $200 million funding round led by Tiger Global, where CEO Carl Pei outlined ambitious plans for AI-integrated operating systems and specialized AI devices. Pei has been vocal about his frustration with the smartphone industry's slow software evolution, criticizing manufacturers for following safer, incremental approaches rather than pursuing meaningful innovation.
"Something that has always bothered me is why we aren't improving software? A lot of people look at what big companies like Apple do, and follow that because that is the safer path," Pei explained in a recent interview. He believes AI breakthroughs will fundamentally transform operating systems, making them more personalized by leveraging the vast contextual data our devices already possess.
Despite these aspirations, Nothing's current AI offerings remain limited. The company has only released one AI-enabled application: Essential Space, which handles screenshot sharing, voice note recording, and meeting transcriptions. These features are already standard in most modern smartphone operating systems, and users can easily install similar AI applications independently.
Nothing faces significant challenges in establishing itself within the competitive smartphone market. According to IDC analytics data, the company holds less than 1% of global smartphone market share, competing against tech giants like Apple, Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, and others with vastly larger resources and user bases.
However, Pei views Nothing's smaller scale as a strategic advantage. He believes the company's agility allows for more focused development of AI-specific hardware, potentially creating specialized devices for particular use cases once they perfect the smartphone implementation.
The concept of prompt-based app development shows promise theoretically, but similar smartphone applications have struggled to gain widespread adoption. Appfigures data indicates that security concerns and maintenance challenges have historically limited success in this space. Pei acknowledges these obstacles and emphasizes that maintaining robust security while enabling developer creativity will be crucial for Nothing's future success.
"We have millions of users on our devices. So whatever we ship should be easy to use and hard to make a mistake on," Pei stated, highlighting the company's commitment to security as they expand their AI toolkit offerings.
Nothing currently offers these AI development tools free of charge, with no immediate plans for monetization through paid tiers. Instead, the company is prioritizing community building around Playground, focusing on recognizing and supporting users who create valuable contributions to the platform.
As AI-powered app development continues gaining momentum across the tech industry, Nothing's Playground represents an interesting approach to democratizing software creation. Whether this tool can overcome historical challenges in the space and help Nothing differentiate itself in the crowded smartphone market remains to be seen.

CommanderAI says it's building the Salesforce for the waste management industry

CommanderAI raises $5M to digitize waste management sales processes.
David Berg discovered a major gap in the waste management industry while driving garbage trucks as the first employee at Battle Motors. Despite numerous sales platforms existing, the $100 billion waste management industry still relies heavily on pen-and-paper processes, door-to-door sales, and minimal technology adoption.
This insight led Berg to launch CommanderAI in early 2024, a specialized CRM and sales prospecting platform designed specifically for waste management companies, dumpster rental services, and industrial recyclers. Unlike generic platforms like Salesforce or HubSpot, CommanderAI addresses the unique challenges facing waste management sales teams.
The platform's key advantage lies in its ability to identify prospects that traditional CRM systems miss. Waste management companies often sell to small businesses without strong online presence and new construction projects that aren't widely advertised. CommanderAI uses AI to collect and segment this hard-to-find data from across the public web.
"Although that data is inherently available somewhere on the public web, to be able to segment it and actually repurpose it to where it's useful took a lot of work," Berg explained. The company's AI pipeline identifies industry-specific nuances that generic platforms overlook.
CommanderAI recently secured a $5 million seed round led by 11 Tribes Ventures, with participation from Watchfire Ventures, Gaingels, and Rad Fund. The funding will expand the sales team and add new features including mapping, marketing, and routing capabilities.
The company currently focuses on mid-to-large regional players and has found particular success with medical and hazardous waste management companies. Berg's approach emphasizes enhancing existing sales processes rather than replacing them entirely.
With only about 10 active software providers serving the entire waste management industry, CommanderAI sees significant opportunity ahead. The company aims to capture 30% of the waste management industry as users and plans eventual expansion into adjacent industrial sectors.
