Indian news agency sues OpenAI alleging copyright infringement
In a significant legal development that could reshape AI-media relations, Asian News International (ANI), one of India's largest news agencies, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI over copyright infringement. This 287-page legal challenge, submitted to the Delhi High Court, represents the first time an Indian media organization has taken legal action against OpenAI over copyright claims.
Legal Battle and Core Allegations
The lawsuit centers on two primary accusations: OpenAI's alleged unauthorized use of ANI's content for AI model training and the generation of false information attributed to the news agency. During the initial hearing, Justice Amit Bansal issued a summons to OpenAI after the company confirmed it had already restricted ChatGPT's access to ANI's website. The court, recognizing the case's complexity, declined to issue an immediate injunction and scheduled further proceedings for January.
ChatGPT's creation of fabricated content is particularly concerning, including a nonexistent interview with opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. ANI argues these "hallucinations" pose a significant threat to its reputation and could potentially trigger public disorder. This aspect of the case highlights the growing concern about AI systems generating and attributing false information to legitimate news sources.
Global Context and Legal Strategies
This case adds to mounting global pressure on AI companies regarding copyright issues. OpenAI currently faces multiple similar lawsuits worldwide, including over a dozen in the U.S., two in Canada, and one in Germany. The company's defense strategy in India centers on several key arguments, including the assertion that copyright laws don't protect facts and that websites can opt out of data collection.
OpenAI's legal team, led by counsel Amit Sibal, emphasizes that the Microsoft-backed firm has no servers in India and questions the court's jurisdiction. However, ANI's lawyers, represented by Sidhant Kumar of UNUM Law, counter that public availability doesn't grant rights to exploit content.
The company maintains its commitment to supporting news organizations, stating they are "actively engaged in constructive partnerships and conversations with many news organizations around the world, including India, to explore opportunities, listen to feedback, and work collaboratively."
The Delhi High Court plans to appoint an independent expert to advise on the copyright implications of AI models using publicly available content. Future hearings will examine technical aspects of how news content spreads across multiple platforms, potentially setting important precedents for AI and media interactions.
This case could significantly influence how AI companies operate in India and potentially set precedents for similar cases globally. It raises crucial questions about the balance between technological innovation and intellectual property rights in the digital age, particularly in emerging markets where AI regulation is still evolving.
The outcome could have far-reaching implications for both AI development and news media protection, possibly establishing new standards for how AI companies interact with copyrighted content. As the world's most populous nation, India's handling of this case could influence global approaches to AI regulation and copyright protection.
Google Lens can now check prices and inventory when shopping in the real world
Google is launching new shopping features in Google Lens that allow users to check prices, reviews, and inventory while shopping in physical stores. The AI-powered feature, which uses Google's Shopping Graph of 45 billion product listings and Gemini models, lets shoppers compare prices across retailers and access product information by taking photos of items. Initially available for beauty products, toys, and electronics at retailers like Target, Ulta Beauty, and Macy's, the feature is launching for U.S. users. Google is also adding product search capabilities to Maps and expanding buy now, pay later options in Google Pay to include Afterpay, with Klarna coming soon.
OpenAI brings ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode to the web
OpenAI is extending ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode from mobile apps to web browsers, allowing paid subscribers to engage in voice conversations with the chatbot. The feature uses GPT-4's audio capabilities to understand non-verbal cues like talking speed and respond with emotional variation. Users can choose from nine different voice personalities for ChatGPT's responses. Currently available to Plus, Enterprise, Teams, and Edu subscribers with daily usage limits, the feature will roll out to free users in the coming weeks with monthly preview access.

Microsoft Teams to Offer Voice Cloning for Real-Time Translation
In a bold but potentially controversial move, Microsoft has announced plans to introduce voice cloning technology to Teams, allowing users to speak in multiple languages while maintaining their original voice. The new feature, called Interpreter in Teams, promises to revolutionize international communication when it launches in early 2025.
The technology will enable real-time speech-to-speech translation across nine major languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. As Microsoft CMO Jared Spataro explains, "Imagine being able to sound just like you in a different language." The feature aims to create more personal and engaging cross-language interactions in virtual meetings.
However, this innovation arrives amid growing concerns about AI voice technology. The past year has seen a surge in deepfake-related incidents, with high-profile figures from President Biden to Taylor Swift being impersonated, and losses from voice-based impersonation scams exceeding $1 billion. In one notable incident, cybercriminals reportedly used convincing AI technology in a Teams meeting to defraud a company of $25 million.
Microsoft appears mindful of these risks. The company emphasizes that Interpreter won't store biometric data or add artificial emotions to voices, and users must explicitly consent to voice simulation. The feature will be restricted to Microsoft 365 subscribers and can be disabled through Teams settings.
The broader context suggests significant market potential for such technology, with the natural language processing sector projected to reach $35.1 billion by 2026. However, current AI translation technology still faces challenges, particularly in handling colloquialisms, analogies, and cultural nuances.
While Microsoft positions Interpreter as a narrowly focused application of voice cloning technology, security experts remain concerned about potential misuse. The coming months will be crucial as Microsoft reveals more details about its safety measures, especially given that other companies like OpenAI have chosen not to release similar technology due to security concerns.
