Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger retires
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has retired effective December 1, with CFO David Zinsner and Client Computing Group GM Michelle Johnston Holthaus named as interim co-CEOs. Gelsinger, who began his career at Intel as an 18-year-old and later served as CTO, returned as CEO in 2021 to lead an ambitious five-year turnaround plan. However, his tenure was marked by setbacks including failed deals, manufacturing challenges, and declining revenue. Intel's revenue dropped to $54 billion in 2023, with the company posting a $16.6 billion quarterly loss in October - its largest ever. Bloomberg reports the board gave Gelsinger the option to retire or be removed. Intel shares rose 2.66% on news of his departure.

World Labs Transforms 2D Photos into Interactive 3D Worlds
AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li's startup World Labs has unveiled a groundbreaking AI system that can turn a single photograph into an interactive, three-dimensional environment. While AI-powered 3D conversion isn't new, World Labs' technology stands out for creating scenes that users can actually explore and modify in real time.
The system generates browser-based environments that users can navigate with a keyboard and mouse, complete with adjustable camera controls and simulated depth of field effects. What makes this technology particularly noteworthy is its consistency - unlike other "world models" that struggle with artifacts and memory issues, World Labs' scenes maintain their integrity and follow basic physics principles.
"[Our tech] lets you step into any image and explore it in 3D," World Labs explained in their announcement. "Beyond the input image, all is generated." The company envisions this technology transforming how we create movies, games, simulators, and other digital content.
However, the current implementation does have limitations. Users can only explore a restricted area within each scene, and occasional rendering errors occur, such as objects blending unnaturally. But World Labs emphasizes this is just an "early preview" of their technology.
The startup, launched earlier this year with $230 million in venture funding from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Ashton Kutcher, and Eric Schmidt, has achieved a valuation exceeding $1 billion. They're targeting a 2025 product launch, with ambitious plans to serve professionals from game developers to filmmakers.
As co-founder Justin Johnson notes, "We already have the ability to create virtual, interactive worlds, but it costs hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars and a ton of development time." World Labs aims to democratize this process, making immersive 3D content creation more accessible and efficient than ever before.
