ChatGPT’s newest feature lets users assign it traits like ‘chatty’ and ‘Gen Z’

ChatGPT Customization

ChatGPT Customization Interface

OpenAI is rolling out a significant update to ChatGPT, allowing users to customize their AI interactions through personality traits and personal details. The new feature represents an evolution of the platform's custom instructions menu, offering a more user-friendly way to personalize the chatbot experience.

New Customization Options

The updated interface enables users to specify their preferred name, profession, and other personal details they'd like ChatGPT to know. More notably, users can now assign specific personality traits to the AI, such as "Chatty," "Encouraging," or "Gen Z," influencing how the chatbot communicates.

Technical Implementation

The update appears to be more of a user interface enhancement than a fundamental technical change. The system still relies on prompt engineering, a method that "primes" the AI with user-provided instructions to guide its responses. The new menu simply presents these options in a more accessible format.

OpenAI continues to apply moderation to custom instructions to ensure compliance with its terms of use. This oversight remains crucial as the company balances personalization with responsible AI deployment.

Why it matters: The development suggests a broader trend in AI toward more personalized interactions. The ability to customize interaction styles could become increasingly important for user acceptance and engagement, influencing future developments in AI platforms.

⚡ The companies of the future

Nvidia, Google, OpenAI Turn To 'Synthetic Data' Factories To Train AI Models

Synthetic Data Factories

Nvidia Cosmos system generating synthetic data

Nvidia, Google, and OpenAI are increasingly turning to "synthetic data" factories to train AI models as they face shortages of real-world training data. At CES 2025, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang discussed how the company is using its "Nvidia Cosmos" system, which has watched 20 million hours of video, to create synthetic data for training robots and autonomous vehicles.

Google Cloud and OpenAI are also embracing synthetic data generation, as tech companies debate whether AI models are plateauing due to difficulties in sourcing high-quality, human-made training data.

Why it matters: The shift to synthetic data marks a critical evolution in AI development, addressing the bottleneck in real-world data availability and opening new opportunities for more efficient and scalable model training.

Mark Zuckerberg gave Meta’s Llama team the OK to train on copyrighted works, filing claims

Meta Copyright Training

Meta’s controversial AI training practices under scrutiny

According to newly unredacted court documents, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg approved the use of LibGen, a dataset of pirated e-books and articles, to train the company's Llama AI models despite internal concerns.

The filing alleges that Meta stripped copyright information from the materials and used torrenting to access the data, with Meta engineers expressing reservations about the legal implications.

Why it matters: The case, involving plaintiffs like Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, challenges Meta's fair use defense of its AI training practices, raising significant legal and ethical questions about the use of copyrighted content in training AI models.

⚡ Trends for the Future

AI Cameras Lead California's High-Tech Battle Against Wildfires

AI Wildfire Detection

Explain The Picture

The details:

As a 27,000-acre inferno threatens Los Angeles, firefighters are deploying an innovative arsenal of technologies to combat the blaze, ranging from AI-powered detection systems to specialized aircraft. This combination of cutting-edge artificial intelligence and traditional firefighting equipment represents a new frontier in wildfire management.

Leading this technological evolution is UC San Diego's ALERTCalifornia project, which has established an extensive network of AI-enabled cameras throughout the state. In Los Angeles County alone, 115 cameras maintain constant vigilance, forming part of a larger network of over 1,140 cameras across California. The system's effectiveness was recently demonstrated in Orange County, where it achieved its first AI-detected vegetation fire, enabling responders to contain the blaze to less than a quarter acre.

Sonia Kastner, CEO and cofounder of Pano AI, a Salesforce Ventures-backed startup, explains that this shift toward early detection reflects an adaptation to worsening fire seasons. "You can think of it as similar to how we treat cancer," Kastner says. "We screen early, then treat cancer aggressively at stage one, so that it never becomes stage four."

The traditional approach of relying on bystander reports has significant limitations, according to Kastner. "It's a matter of luck of whether a bystander sees the fire," she notes. "And then there's a mandatory confirmation step where a single fire engine is dispatched to drive around and try to find the fire. With that, you lose hours." The new AI-powered systems aim to eliminate these delays by providing rapid, precise location data to first responders.

What makes this crucial: This blend of AI-powered detection systems, advanced aerial equipment, and traditional firefighting methods represents a comprehensive approach to wildfire management. As fire seasons become increasingly challenging, the combination of early detection technology and rapid response capabilities offers hope for more effective wildfire containment in the future.
