A recent incident involving Character.ai, a platform for creating AI personas, has sparked outrage and raised serious ethical concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence. The platform hosted a chatbot that mimicked Jennifer Ann Crecente, a young woman who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend 18 years ago, causing immense distress to her family.
Key points of the incident:
Drew Crecente, Jennifer's father, discovered the chatbot through a Google Alert.
The AI used Jennifer's name, and yearbook photo, and falsely described her as a journalism expert.
The chatbot had been used in at least 69 different conversations before discovery.
Character.ai removed the bot after the family's complaint, citing violation of their policies against impersonating real people.
Drew Crecente, who runs a nonprofit to raise awareness about teenage dating violence in memory of his daughter, was shocked and traumatized by the discovery. He immediately reached out to Character.ai, demanding the removal of the chatbot and assurances that no future bots could be created using his daughter's identity.
Brian Crecente, Jennifer's uncle and a well-known video game journalist, took to social media to express his anger. He described the situation as "disgusting" and called for public support to stop such practices.

An anti-theft upgrade is coming to Android phones
Google is rolling out a new AI-powered anti-theft feature called Theft Detection Lock for Android phones. Key points:
The feature uses AI to detect motion associated with theft, such as snatching and running away.
When suspicious motion is detected, the phone immediately locks its screen.
The tool uses the phone's gyroscope and accelerometer to monitor for theft-like movements.
