OpenAI raises $6.6B and is now valued at $157B
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has closed the largest venture capital round in history, raising $6.6 billion at a staggering $157 billion post-money valuation. This mammoth funding round, led by Thrive Capital, brings OpenAI's total raised capital to $17.9 billion.
Key investors and their contributions include:
Thrive Capital: $1.3 billion (with an option for $1 billion more)
Microsoft: Just under $1 billion
SoftBank: $500 million
Nvidia: $100 million
Other participants: Khosla Ventures, Altimeter Capital, Fidelity, and MGX
OpenAI plans to use the new funds to strengthen its AI research, increase compute capacity, and develop tools for solving complex problems. However, the funding may come with strings attached, as reports suggest OpenAI asked investors to avoid backing rival startups like Anthropic and xAI.
This unprecedented funding puts OpenAI in a league of its own, far outpacing competitors. For context, Elon Musk's xAI raised over $6 billion at a $24 billion valuation, while Anthropic has secured $9.7 billion in total funding.
OpenAI's massive capital needs stem from its expensive operations. The company reportedly spent $7 billion on model training and $1.5 billion on staffing, with older models like GPT-4 costing over $100 million to train. ChatGPT alone was said to cost $700,000 daily to run at one point.
Despite these costs, OpenAI is the market leader in generative AI. ChatGPT boasts over 250 million users (10 million paying subscribers), and the company's annualized revenue has reportedly surpassed $3.4 billion. OpenAI ambitiously projects $100 billion in revenue by 2029.

US Commerce Dept. plans to announce $100M funding for AI-driven semiconductor research
The U.S. Commerce Department plans to award $100 million to boost the use of artificial intelligence in developing new sustainable semiconductor materials. This funding aims to support universities, national laboratories, and the private sector in developing AI-powered autonomous experimentation for sustainable semiconductor manufacturing. The initiative is part of the department's $52.7 billion allocation for U.S. chip manufacturing and research grants. This announcement comes as the U.S. also welcomed India's Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, to discuss bilateral cooperation in areas including strategic technology sectors, space, semiconductors, and clean energy. Elon Musk's AI company xAI has moved into OpenAI's former headquarters in San Francisco's Mission district. Key points:
xAI is now occupying the office space previously used by OpenAI for several years
Musk's lawyers claim he originally leased the building when he worked at OpenAI and has continued paying for it
OpenAI recently moved to a new office just 4 blocks away
xAI hosted an open house in the new space hours after OpenAI's DevDay event
xAI employees said they just moved in Monday but will spend most time at their Palo Alto office
This comes despite Musk's recent claims he would move his companies from California to Texas, though xAI may be an exception
