Meta tests facial recognition for spotting ‘celeb-bait’ ads scams and easier account recovery

Meta has announced expanded testing of facial recognition technology to combat scam advertisements and improve account recovery processes. The company's VP of content policy, Monika Bickert, revealed that the technology will primarily target "celeb-bait" scams, where fraudsters misuse public figures' images in deceptive advertisements.

The system works by comparing faces in suspicious ads against public figures' official Facebook and Instagram profile pictures. Meta claims that early tests with a select group of celebrities have shown promising results in detecting and blocking scam ads more efficiently. The company emphasizes that facial data is immediately deleted after comparison and isn't used for any other purpose.

Beyond scam prevention, Meta is testing facial recognition for identifying celebrity impersonator accounts and introducing video selfie verification for account recovery. This new recovery method aims to provide a faster alternative to traditional ID-based verification, though Meta claims it will maintain strict security measures for biometric data storage.

Notably, these tests are being conducted globally but exclude the United Kingdom and European Union, where strict data protection regulations apply. This geographic limitation aligns with Meta's recent efforts to influence European lawmakers regarding privacy protection policies.

While Meta presents these features as security measures, the timing coincides with the company's broader push to collect user data for AI model training. This development raises questions about the balance between security enhancement and data privacy, particularly as Meta expands its AI capabilities.

‘Blade Runner 2049’ producer accuses Musk and Tesla of circumventing copyright with AI imagery

Alcon Entertainment, producer of "Blade Runner 2049," is suing Tesla, Elon Musk, and Warner Bros. Digital over alleged copyright infringement involving AI-generated imagery. The lawsuit claims that after being denied rights to use imagery from the film, Tesla and Musk used AI to recreate similar imagery for promoting Tesla's new concept cars at a Warner studio lot event.

The producers allege this was a deliberate circumvention of their intellectual property rights. The legal action seeks unspecified damages and aims to prevent Tesla from further distributing the promotional materials in question. This case represents a new variation on AI-related copyright lawsuits, focusing on the use of AI to recreate protected content rather than the more common complaints about AI training data.

AI is not just about processing data faster, it's about discovering new ways of thinking about problems. It challenges our assumptions about intelligence and pushes us to understand both the capabilities and limitations of human cognition.

DataCrunch: Europe's Green Bid for AI Computing Dominance

In the rapidly expanding world of AI computing, a Finnish startup is carving out a unique niche with an environmentally conscious approach. DataCrunch, founded in 2020 by Ruben Bryon, aims to become Europe's first AI cloud hyperscaler, with a distinctive focus on renewable energy powering its operations.

The company has just secured $13 million in seed funding, structured as a combination of equity and debt – $7.6 million from investors including byFounders and J12 Ventures, and $5.4 million in debt from LokalTapiola and Nordea. This unusual financing structure reflects an industry trend: using valuable Nvidia GPUs as collateral for loans rather than diluting equity.

DataCrunch's business model revolves around offering "GPU-as-a-service," making AI processing more accessible and cost-effective. The company has already attracted notable clients, from corporate giants like Sony to individual AI researchers working at companies like OpenAI. This diverse customer base reflects Bryon's commitment to serving both large corporations and independent researchers, acknowledging that today's PhD students could be tomorrow's industry leaders.

What sets DataCrunch apart is its strategic location choices. With data centers in Helsinki and Iceland, the company leverages natural advantages for sustainable operations. Iceland's grid runs on 100% renewable energy, while Helsinki's facilities capture waste heat to warm the city. The cold Nordic climate provides natural cooling, further reducing environmental impact.

These green credentials come with trade-offs. DataCrunch isn't competing on ultra-low latency – customers might face 100-millisecond delays rather than 10 milliseconds – but Bryon believes this is acceptable for many AI workloads. The company focuses on compute tasks that don't require split-second responses.

Currently operating from shared co-location facilities, DataCrunch has ambitious plans to build its own data centers starting in 2025. Bryon envisions taking the company public eventually, acknowledging that significant capital will be needed for expansion. The company might even consider expanding to similarly climate-advantaged locations like Canada in the future.

In Europe's growing AI infrastructure landscape, DataCrunch positions itself against competitors like France's FlexAI and the newly public Nebius. But with its focus on renewable energy and sustainable operations, DataCrunch is betting that environmental consciousness will become increasingly crucial in the AI computing arms race.
