Samsung's axing thousands of jobs amid AI market woes. It turns out that even tech giants can get a nasty case of AI jitters.
OpenAI's DevDay is showering developers with goodies like the Realtime API. It's Christmas in Silicon Valley, and Santa's wearing a hoodie.

Anthropic hires OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma
Anthropic, a rising star in the AI industry, has made a significant move by hiring Durk Kingma, one of the lesser-known co-founders of OpenAI. Kingma announced his new position at Anthropic through a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), indicating that he'll be working mostly remotely from the Netherlands while frequently visiting the San Francisco Bay Area.
Kingma, who holds a Ph.D. in machine learning from the University of Amsterdam, brings a wealth of experience to Anthropic. His career includes a stint as a doctoral fellow at Google, followed by his role as a founding member and research scientist at OpenAI. At OpenAI, Kingma led the algorithms team, focusing on developing techniques for generative AI models, including image generators like DALL-E 3 and large language models like ChatGPT.
This hiring coup is part of a larger trend of talent acquisition for Anthropic. The company has previously recruited other high-profile figures from OpenAI, including:
Jan Leike, OpenAI's former safety lead, in May
John Schulman, another OpenAI co-founder, in August
Mike Krieger, Instagram, and Artifact co-founder, as head of product in May
Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, is himself a former VP of research at OpenAI who left the company reportedly due to disagreements over its growing commercial focus. Amodei brought several ex-OpenAI employees with him when founding Anthropic, including Jack Clark, OpenAI's former policy lead.
This pattern of recruitment underscores Anthropic's strategy to position itself as a more safety-focused alternative to OpenAI. By assembling a team of experienced AI researchers and leaders, Anthropic aims to develop powerful AI systems responsibly.
Kingma expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating that Anthropic's approach to AI development aligns significantly with his own beliefs. He looks forward to contributing to the company's mission and working with former colleagues from both OpenAI and Google.
As the AI industry continues to evolve rapidly, moves like this highlight the intense competition for top talent and the different approaches companies are taking in the development of artificial intelligence technologies.
Samsung to Cut Thousands of Jobs Amid Struggles in AI Market
Samsung Electronics is implementing significant job cuts across its global operations, particularly in Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The layoffs could affect about 10% of the workforce in these markets, with similar reductions planned for other overseas subsidiaries. The company, which has about 147,000 staff overseas out of a total of 267,800 employees, is not planning layoffs in its home market of South Korea. These cuts come as Samsung faces challenges in key markets, including falling behind in memory chips for AI and custom-made chips. The company's shares have dropped over 20% this year. Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee is now tasked with leading Samsung through these challenges. Read more

β¬οΈ οΈ Trends: How Businesses Implement AI
AI's Potential to Disrupt Healthcare: A Slow but Promising Revolution
Despite the recent cooling of the AI hype in the stock market, generative AI is gradually finding its way into real-world applications, with healthcare emerging as a potential candidate for significant AI-driven innovation.
Key Points:
Healthcare's Underperformance: The sector has underperformed in 7 of the last 8 years, despite being the only S&P 500 sector with positive annual earnings growth for 21 consecutive years.
Barriers to AI Adoption: The complex web of players, regulations, and legacy systems has slowed AI adoption in healthcare.
Potential AI Applications:
Streamlining insurance approvals
Improving manual record-keeping
Enhancing claims management
Accelerating medical imaging and diagnostics
Big Tech Involvement: Companies like Google and Microsoft are partnering with hospitals and startups to develop AI tools for healthcare.
AI in Patient Care:
Aims to empower healthcare professionals, not replace them
Could help predict patient outcomes and model care to anticipate complications
Drug Discovery: Morgan Stanley estimates that small improvements in preclinical development success rates could lead to significant increases in new drug approvals and market value.
While the adoption of AI in healthcare is progressing slowly, industry experts see it as a key to unlocking long-term growth in the sector. The focus is not just on cost-cutting but on revolutionizing patient care through improved diagnostics, treatment selection, and drug discovery.

πΈLetβs Teleport in The Future
RippleX, the development arm of Ripple, is launching an AI Fund to support innovative projects combining artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. The company announced an upcoming information session on October 2 to discuss the XRPLGrants AI Fund, application requirements, and answer questions from potential applicants.
In other Ripple news, the company issued a warning to the XRP community regarding its new dollar-pegged stablecoin, RLUSD. While the asset has remained in private beta testing since August, there has been public on-chain activity as Ripple mints and burns large batches of RLUSD. The company emphasized that RLUSD is not yet available to the public and warned users to be vigilant against potential scams.
On October 1, Ripple continued its tradition of unlocking one billion XRP from escrow, releasing the tokens in three transactions totaling 626.9 million dollars in value. This practice, ongoing for six years, supports Ripple's operational expenses, provides XRP to institutional clients, and maintains market liquidity. Following the release, Ripple returned 800 million XRP to escrow for future use.
The unlocking process involves withdrawing XRP on the first day of each month, using a portion for various purposes, and then returning the majority to escrow. This systematic approach helps Ripple manage its XRP holdings while supporting the broader XRP ecosystem.
As Ripple continues to innovate in both AI and blockchain spaces, these developments highlight the company's ongoing efforts to expand its technological offerings and maintain transparency with its community. The upcoming AI Fund, in particular, signals Ripple's interest in fostering new projects at the intersection of two rapidly evolving fields.
