Microsoft Copilot AI bug accessed confidential customer emails without authorization
Microsoft says Office bug exposed customers' confidential emails to Copilot AI
Microsoft has acknowledged a significant security flaw that allowed its Copilot AI assistant to access and summarize customers' confidential emails without proper authorization, raising serious concerns about data privacy and corporate security protocols.
The vulnerability, which was active for several weeks beginning in January, enabled Copilot Chat to read and create summaries of sensitive email content, even when customers had implemented data loss prevention (DLP) policies specifically designed to protect confidential information from being processed by Microsoft's large language models.
Originally discovered and reported by Bleeping Computer, the bug affected Microsoft 365 customers who pay for access to Copilot Chat, an AI-powered feature integrated across Office software products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This premium service is designed to enhance productivity by providing intelligent assistance within familiar workplace applications.
Microsoft has officially designated the security issue with the tracking identifier CW1226324, allowing system administrators to monitor and reference the bug within their organizational systems. According to the company's technical documentation, the flaw specifically caused "draft and sent email messages with a confidential label applied" to be "incorrectly processed by Microsoft 365 Copilot chat."
The implications of this security breach extend beyond simple data exposure. Many organizations rely on confidential email labels and DLP policies as critical safeguards to prevent sensitive corporate communications, legal documents, financial information, and other proprietary content from being inadvertently shared or processed by third-party systems, including AI platforms.
Microsoft began deploying a fix for the vulnerability in early February, though the company has not provided a specific timeline for when the patch will reach all affected customers. The tech giant's response has been notably limited, with company representatives declining to comment on key aspects of the incident, including the total number of customers impacted by the security flaw.
This incident occurs amid growing scrutiny of AI integration in workplace environments. Earlier this week, the European Parliament's IT department took the precautionary step of disabling built-in AI features on lawmakers' work devices. The decision was driven by concerns that these AI tools could potentially upload sensitive or confidential correspondence to cloud-based systems, where data security and privacy cannot be fully guaranteed.
The European Parliament's action reflects broader institutional concerns about the rapid deployment of AI technologies in sensitive governmental and corporate environments. Many organizations are grappling with the balance between leveraging AI capabilities for improved productivity and maintaining strict data security protocols.
For Microsoft 365 customers, this incident highlights the importance of regularly reviewing AI feature settings and understanding how these tools interact with confidential data. Organizations may want to reassess their current data protection policies and consider additional safeguards when using AI-powered features in their productivity software.
The bug's existence for several weeks without detection also raises questions about Microsoft's internal testing procedures and monitoring systems for AI features that handle sensitive customer data. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into essential business tools, the need for robust security measures and transparent communication about potential vulnerabilities becomes more critical.

WordPress.com launches built-in AI assistant for website management
WordPress.com adds an AI Assistant that can edit, adjust styles, create images, and more
Automattic's WordPress.com has introduced a built-in AI assistant that helps users manage websites through natural language commands. The tool can adjust layouts, styles, and colors, add sections like contact pages, and update content including translations and bio rewrites.
The assistant also functions as an editor, offering headline suggestions and grammar checks through the block notes editor. For visuals, it leverages Google Gemini's AI models to generate or edit images. The feature is opt-in and works exclusively with block themes, not classic ones.

SpendRule raises $2M, emerges from stealth to help hospitals track spending
AI-powered platform helps healthcare systems prevent overspending on contracts.
After selling their respective companies and serving out non-compete agreements, entrepreneurs Chris Heckler and Joseph Akintolayo found themselves ready for their next venture. Heckler, coming off a five-year non-compete from his healthcare startup exit, realized he was "too young to retire" from angel investing. Meanwhile, Akintolayo had just sold his fintech company and was exploring new opportunities.
Their collaboration resulted in SpendRule, an AI-powered platform that launched last summer to help healthcare systems track spending more effectively. The company emerged from stealth this week with $2 million in funding led by Abundant Venture Partners, with participation from MemorialCare Innovation Fund and Zeal Capital Partners.
SpendRule addresses a significant pain point in hospital operations. While health systems use three-way matching for barcoded items, many purchases lack easy identification, including maintenance, janitorial services, translation services, and laundry contracts. These complex purchases often lead to overspending due to poor tracking and validation.
The platform integrates with existing enterprise resource planning software, contract management systems, and accounts payable workflows. It pulls data from contracts, invoices, internal databases, and vendor information to validate invoices before payment release, flagging discrepancies and advising teams on payment decisions.
This automation replaces the traditional approach of hiring auditors every two years or manually reviewing each invoice. Major healthcare systems including Kettering Health, MemorialCare, and MUSC Health have already adopted the platform.
The founders leveraged Heckler's industry connections to close their initial funding round by Halloween, just months after starting the company. The capital will support team expansion and continued development of their AI infrastructure.
SpendRule differentiates itself from competitors like SpendMend and GHX by focusing specifically on purchase services without barcodes. As Akintolayo explained, their vision is "to build a more resilient hospital system" by connecting data and enabling better financial decisions.
