Elon Musk praises Mythos/Fable, promises not to 'cut off' Anthropic

Can Anthropic trust Elon Musk? That question has been circulating online after users on X raised concerns that Musk could one day simply pull the plug on Anthropic's access to SpaceX's servers — a move that could cripple a major competitor. Musk responded with surprising warmth toward the AI lab, insisting such a move is "not my style."

"I was clearly wrong about Anthropic," Musk wrote, walking back a September 2025 post in which he claimed that winning "was never in the set of possible outcomes" for the company. That comment aged poorly — Anthropic had already secured the largest enterprise AI market share at the time.

Fast forward to mid-2026, and Anthropic is now one of SpaceX's biggest customers. In May, Anthropic signed a landmark deal to purchase 300 megawatts of compute — the full output of xAI's Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The price tag? $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, totaling roughly $40 billion in revenue for SpaceX's xAI unit. For context, Google also inked a deal to rent SpaceX infrastructure through June 2029, at $920 million per month. (xAI merged with SpaceX back in February.)

Musk has been vocal about his admiration for Anthropic's current standing in the AI race. "They are obviously currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable, and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon. And I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor. That's not my style," he wrote.

To back up his claim, Musk pointed to several past decisions he views as evidence of fair play. He cited Tesla's 2014 pledge not to initiate patent lawsuits against those using its technology in good faith, its decision to open the Supercharger network to competitors, and SpaceX's policy of launching rival satellite systems without price hikes or unfair terms. "Even my worst enemies can attack me on this platform," he added.

That said, Musk's track record isn't spotless when it comes to rivals. He has sued OpenAI, a company with which he has a long and contentious history. So while his words carry some weight, they aren't the only thing keeping this deal on track.

Anthropic has more practical safeguards in place. Breaking the contract would come with serious legal and financial consequences for SpaceX. Beyond that, the deal is simply too lucrative to jeopardize. Anthropic pays handsomely, and SpaceX's engineers stand to gain deep experience supporting one of the world's fastest-growing AI platforms — much like Amazon's engineers have benefited from their close work with AI clients.

Still, the arrangement raises eyebrows. During his trial against OpenAI, Musk acknowledged the reality of AI "distilling" — a practice where one company creates fake accounts to repeatedly prompt a competitor's model in order to reverse-engineer how it works. When asked whether xAI had ever distilled from OpenAI, Musk offered a telling reply: "Generally AI companies distill other AI companies."

Anthropic itself accused three Chinese AI firms of doing exactly this to its Claude model back in February. Presumably, both Anthropic and Google have safeguards in place to prevent SpaceX from doing the same while hosting their infrastructure. Even so, having physical access to Anthropic's compute gives SpaceX an unusually close view into how the company operates — closer than most competitors could ever get.

For now, the arrangement looks like a win-win, with SpaceX raking in billions and Anthropic securing the compute it needs to scale. But as the three-year contract progresses and the competitive landscape shifts, the dynamics of this unusual partnership could get a lot more complicated.

SK Hynix smashes records with a $26.5B US IPO, fueled by AI chip demand.

SK Hynix raises $26.5B in the biggest foreign IPO in US history, is urged to build new US fabs

South Korean memory chip maker SK Hynix raised $26.5 billion in its US market debut, surpassing Alibaba's 2014 record for the largest-ever foreign IPO. Trading on Nasdaq under the ticker SKHY, the stock opened 14% above its IPO price, with demand reportedly exceeding supply by seven times.

The success is largely driven by SK Hynix's production of high-bandwidth memory chips, a critical component in Nvidia's AI GPUs. Funds raised will go toward new facilities in South Korea.

Meanwhile, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is reportedly pushing SK Hynix and Samsung to build new factories on American soil.

Meta removes controversial AI feature on Instagram after backlash

Meta pulls Instagram AI photo tool after widespread user backlash and agency scrutiny.

Meta has removed a controversial AI feature from Instagram that allowed users to modify photos sourced from public accounts. The feature, which launched earlier this week as part of a broader rollout of AI tools, has been quietly pulled after the company acknowledged it "missed the mark."

The feature was part of Meta's new Muse Image tool, an AI image generator developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs. It allowed users to generate new images by @-mentioning public Instagram accounts as visual references. Critically, the feature offered no notification system to alert users when their photos were being used in this way — a significant oversight that sparked immediate and widespread criticism.

Meta addressed the backlash in a blog post published Friday, stating: "Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We've heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it's no longer available." Puck News founding partner Dylan Byers was among the first to report the company's decision to reverse course.

The controversy is part of a broader pattern surrounding AI and social media. Since AI tools became deeply integrated into major platforms, they have repeatedly been misused — most notably to generate non-consensual intimate imagery of female celebrities. Despite ongoing efforts by platforms to introduce safeguards, those measures have consistently fallen short of curbing the abuse.

In Meta's case, the potential for misuse seemed evident from the outset. According to Byers, the decision to remove the feature came amid mounting pressure from both users and major talent agencies, including Creative Artists Agency (CAA). The swift reversal signals that even tech giants are not immune to public pressure when AI tools cross clear ethical boundaries.
