Microsoft strikes nuclear power deal to meet AI demands
Microsoft AI Needs So Much Power It's Tapping Site of US Nuclear Meltdown

Constellation Energy and Microsoft have signed a groundbreaking 20-year agreement to restart Unit 1 of Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear facility. The move reflects AI’s massive power demands—and marks the first-ever commercial nuclear restart of its kind in the U.S.
As AI and cloud computing scale rapidly, traditional power sources struggle to keep up. Microsoft’s decision to invest in nuclear—despite regulatory challenges and public scrutiny—signals a shift toward reliable, high-capacity energy that runs 24/7, independent of weather variability.
The restart of Three Mile Island’s 835-megawatt unit could power over 700,000 homes. Microsoft’s involvement provides the financial security to justify the estimated $1.6 billion required to revive the site, which was shut down in 2019 for economic reasons.
Investor response has been overwhelmingly positive—Constellation shares surged 20% after the announcement. The deal is seen as a vote of confidence in nuclear’s long-term viability, driven by AI’s insatiable energy needs.
While the projected restart is set for 2028, the facility has not yet filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The restart must clear significant regulatory hurdles and local permitting in a region still haunted by the 1979 partial meltdown of Unit 2.
This is not Microsoft’s only nuclear play. It’s also partnered with fusion startup Helion and other advanced energy ventures. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Bill Gates are backing nuclear startups like Oklo and TerraPower—indicating a broader shift in tech’s approach to energy.
Microsoft’s move sets a potential precedent for other tech firms facing similar energy challenges. The Three Mile Island deal could mark the beginning of a nuclear revival, transforming national energy strategy to meet the demands of an AI-powered future.

OpenAI is launching the Sora app, its own TikTok competitor, alongside the Sora 2 model

OpenAI has unveiled Sora 2, an enhanced video generator that creates more realistic content by better following physics laws. The company simultaneously launched the Sora social app, featuring a TikTok-style feed where users can share AI-generated videos.
The app includes "cameos," allowing users to insert themselves into generated scenes after identity verification. Available initially in the US and Canada for iOS, the invite-only platform lets ChatGPT Pro users access Sora 2 without invites. The free app will charge for extra video generation during high demand periods.

Google unveils AI-powered Nest indoor and outdoor cameras, and a new doorbell

Google launches new AI-powered Nest cameras with enhanced security features.
Google has announced a revamped lineup of Nest smart home security devices at its Wednesday Home event, featuring the $149.99 Nest Cam Outdoor, $99.99 Nest Cam Indoor, and $179.99 Nest Doorbell. All three devices showcase Google's Gemini AI capabilities and include 2K HDR video recording, delivering the highest resolution Google has shipped to date.
The new cameras offer significantly improved features including a wider 152-degree diagonal field of view and enhanced low-light performance with 120% more light sensitivity than previous models. The doorbell features an even wider 166-degree view with a 1:1 aspect ratio, providing better coverage of visitors and packages at the door.
Gemini AI transforms the user experience by making notifications smarter and more contextual. Instead of generic alerts like "motion detected," users receive descriptive notifications such as "dog jumps out of playpen" with zoomed-in video previews. The AI can interpret complex scenarios, distinguishing between a FedEx driver delivering a package versus general motion detection.
A new "Home Brief" feature summarizes 24 hours of activity, allowing users to ask specific questions like what time kids arrived home or whether packages were delivered. Gemini also helps users set up home automations through natural language commands, such as requesting to "feel safer" and receiving suggestions for security routines.
Google is doubling free event history from three to six hours, with 10-second video clips for each event. The cameras come in sustainable, plastic-free packaging with new color options including Snow, Hazel, Berry, and Linen depending on the model.
To expand market reach, Google partnered with Walmart to offer budget-friendly alternatives: the onn Indoor Camera Wired ($22.96) and onn Video Doorbell Wired ($49.86) with 1080p resolution. The existing Nest Aware subscription is being rebranded as Google Home Premium, with integration into Google One plans and consolidation into the Google Home app.
