Microsoft commits over $1 billion to expand Thailand AI infrastructure
Microsoft Deepens Thailand Partnership with more than US$1 billion Investment, Spanning Technology, Trust, and Talent
Microsoft announced a significant expansion of its Thailand partnership following a meeting between Vice Chair Brad Smith and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in Bangkok. The tech giant plans to invest over $1 billion from 2026 to 2028 in cloud and AI infrastructure across Thailand, marking a major milestone in the country's digital transformation.
The investment forms the core of Microsoft's initiative to advance Thailand's national growth and global competitiveness through AI. Prime Minister Charnvirakul emphasized Thailand's ambition to become a regional leader in Asia's digital economy, stating that the announcement demonstrates clear confidence in Thailand's future.
World-Class Technology Infrastructure
At the investment's heart lies Microsoft's commitment to building state-of-the-art cloud and AI data center infrastructure meeting global standards for performance, reliability, and sustainability, including green energy and water positivity initiatives.
Microsoft has established strategic partnerships with leading Thai companies including Gulf Development Public Company Limited, Advanced Info Service, Charoen Pokphand Group, True Corporation, and True Internet Data Center. These collaborations aim to create lasting economic value beyond physical infrastructure, generating skilled employment opportunities and transferring technical expertise to local partners.
The initiative addresses AI diffusion gaps between developed and developing economies. Currently, nearly one in four working-age people in the Global North actively uses AI, compared to roughly one in seven in the Global South, highlighting the critical need for sustained AI infrastructure investment.
Building Digital Trust and Security
Microsoft's investment emphasizes placing Thailand's digital future firmly in Thai hands through trusted digital foundations aligned with the country's data governance, cybersecurity, and AI regulation frameworks. This approach positions Thailand as an attractive international investment destination while ensuring autonomous digital decision-making.
The company collaborates actively with Thailand's government institutions, including the Office of the Council of State (OCS), to develop legal and governance frameworks for the AI-powered economy. A notable example is TH2OECD, an AI-powered legal analysis system built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI that cross-references Thai legal documents against international OECD standards supporting Thailand's OECD accession bid.
Additionally, Microsoft Thailand partnered with the United States Trade and Development Agency, providing a $950,000 grant plus $250,000 in Azure credits to Thai AI developer Ai-ssistance for building AI-powered e-commerce solutions across ASEAN countries.
Empowering Thai Talent
Building on existing commitments, Microsoft has already helped over 2 million Thai people acquire AI skills over the past two years. The partnership with the Ministry of Education modernizes the National Digital Learning Platform, reaching more than 600,000 high school students nationwide with AI-powered educational tools.
Microsoft is introducing Microsoft Elevate for Educators and Microsoft Elevate for Changemakers programs in Thailand, strengthening education and workforce systems to help more people thrive in the AI economy. These programs provide trusted technology, free credentials, professional communities, and capacity building through strategic partnerships.
The workforce development initiative, partnering with the Ministry of Labour's Department of Skill Development, aims to upskill and certify 150,000 workers. Over 280 Microsoft AI courses in Thai are available on the DSD Online Training platform, supported by government-Microsoft credentials and nationwide trainer programs reaching every province.
Dhanawat Suthumpun, Managing Director of Microsoft Thailand, emphasized AI's potential for inclusive growth, stating that putting intelligence in every Thai person's hands enables innovation and creates competitive advantages while building a better society for all.
This comprehensive investment aligns with Thailand's Thailand 4.0 and National AI Strategy ambitions, supporting the country's innovation-driven S-Curve industries through coordinated efforts across government, industry, education, and civil society sectors.

Meta funds ten gas plants for massive AI datacenter
Meta's natural gas binge could power South Dakota
Meta's upcoming Hyperion AI data center will consume electricity equivalent to the entire state of South Dakota. The company plans to build ten natural gas power plants in Louisiana generating 7.5 gigawatts, despite its environmental commitments.
These facilities will emit 12.4 million metric tons of CO2 annuallyβ50% more than Meta's entire 2024 carbon footprint. With methane leakage from natural gas supply chains, the climate impact could exceed coal power, contradicting the company's sustainability goals.

CBSE students to learn AI and computational thinking from Class 3
CBSE launches AI curriculum for Classes 3-8 starting 2026-27.
The Central Board of Secondary Education has launched a groundbreaking curriculum on Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence for Classes 3 to 8, set to begin in the 2026-27 academic session. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan introduced this transformative framework at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, marking a significant step toward future-ready education.
The new curriculum aims to provide young students with early, structured exposure to emerging technologies. It will be supported by comprehensive learning modules, detailed teacher handbooks, and student assessment tools to ensure clear implementation from the outset.
Minister Pradhan emphasized that this initiative embodies "AI for Education, AI in Education," helping children develop critical thinking, design-based approaches, and innovation culture. The curriculum prepares students to engage meaningfully with the digital future as India's technological role continues expanding globally.
The framework focuses on building AI-readiness through computational thinking, teaching students logical thinking, problem-solving, pattern recognition, and understanding AI applications in daily life. Rather than creating passive technology consumers, it aims to develop responsible technology creators who can work ethically with artificial intelligence.
This program aligns directly with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. The rollout follows a phased approach, introducing Computational Thinking first to establish strong foundations before advancing to complex AI concepts in higher grades.
The teaching methodology emphasizes activity-based, experiential learning through games, puzzles, worksheets, and hands-on exercises. Assessment moves beyond memorization, incorporating written tests, computational thinking puzzles, group activities, and Teacher Observation Journals for practical progress tracking.
Officials stressed that this curriculum represents more than learning a new subjectβit's about preparing children for a world where technology will fundamentally reshape work, learning, and communication patterns in unprecedented ways.
