Microsoft announces massive India investment to dominate AI battleground

Microsoft to invest $17.5B in India by 2029 as AI race accelerates

title image

Microsoft has unveiled plans for a massive $17.5 billion investment in India over the next four years, marking the tech giant's largest Asian investment as global companies compete for dominance in the rapidly expanding AI market. The funding will support new data centers, AI infrastructure, and training programs from 2026 to 2029, building upon Microsoft's earlier $3 billion commitment made in January.

The announcement came during CEO Satya Nadella's visit to India, where he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India has emerged as a critical battleground for major tech companies, thanks to its enormous base of internet and smartphone users, thriving developer community, and government initiatives promoting digital transformation.

A centerpiece of the investment is a new data center region in Hyderabad, set to open by mid-2026. This facility will be Microsoft's largest in India, featuring three availability zones spanning an area roughly equivalent to two Eden Gardens stadiums. The company will also expand its existing data center regions in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.

Beyond infrastructure, Microsoft is partnering with India's Ministry of Labour and Employment to integrate AI capabilities into two major government platforms: e-Shram and the National Career Service. These platforms will use Azure OpenAI Service to provide AI-driven services to over 310 million informal workers, including multilingual access, job matching, predictive analytics, and personalized career pathways.

The company is also launching new sovereign cloud options designed to help Indian enterprises meet regulatory and data-residency requirements. These include a Sovereign Public Cloud available across all India regions and a Sovereign Private Cloud powered by Azure Local for both connected and air-gapped operations.

Microsoft's commitment to skills development is equally ambitious. Through its "ADVANTA(I)GE India" initiative, the company has already trained 5.6 million people since January, well ahead of its original 2030 target of 10 million. Now, Microsoft is doubling down, aiming to equip 20 million Indians with basic AI skills by 2030 through partnerships with government agencies and digital platforms.

This investment intensifies competition with other tech giants. Google recently announced a $15 billion AI hub and data center plan for India, following its earlier $10 billion commitment. Meanwhile, OpenAI and Anthropic have established Indian offices, and companies like Google and Perplexity have formed partnerships with major telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

However, expansion in India faces significant challenges. Data center development is hampered by inconsistent power supply, high energy costs, and water scarcity in several regions. These infrastructure constraints could slow AI development and increase operational expenses for cloud providers.

Despite these hurdles, the Indian government continues aggressively courting tech investment, viewing large-scale AI and data center projects as essential to its economic and digital infrastructure goals. New Delhi has introduced incentives for AI and semiconductor projects, streamlined regulations, and encouraged partnerships with domestic firms.

"Microsoft has been part of India's fabric for more than three decades," said Puneet Chandok, president of Microsoft India and South Asia. "As the nation moves confidently into its AI-first future, we are proud to stand as a trusted partner in advancing the infrastructure, innovation, and opportunity that can power a billion dreams."

Microsoft currently employs over 22,000 people across Indian cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune. These teams develop AI products like Copilot Studio, Azure AI Search, and Azure Machine Learning for global markets while supporting domestic operations. The new investment reinforces India's position as both a crucial market and development hub in the global AI race.

After CodeSee's acquisition in 2024, founder Shanea Leven partnered with AI researcher Sean Robinson to launch Empromptu, enabling non-technical business owners to build AI applications through simple chatbot interactions.

The platform creates classification and generative apps on demand while maintaining enterprise-grade security and compliance. Unlike vibe-coding platforms, Empromptu focuses on production-ready software with built-in governance and evaluation tools.

Precursor Ventures led the $2M pre-seed round, with funds targeting staff expansion and proprietary technology development for regulated industries requiring complex data applications.

Google's AI try-on app Doppl adds a shoppable discovery feed

Google introduces shoppable AI-generated video feed to Doppl app.

Google announced on Monday that it's introducing a shoppable discovery feed in Doppl, its experimental app that uses AI to visualize how different outfits might look on you. The tech giant says the idea behind the new feed is to display recommendations so users can discover and virtually try on new items.

Nearly everything in the feed is shoppable, with direct links to merchants. The discovery feed features AI-generated videos of real products and suggests outfits based on your personalized style. Google determines your style by analyzing the preferences you share with Doppl and the items you interact with.

The move comes as short-form video feeds, particularly on TikTok and Instagram, have conditioned users to scroll visual feeds and buy what they see. However, unlike on TikTok and Instagram, where real influencers showcase products, Google's new feed only consists of AI-generated content.

While some may not be fond of an AI-generated feed, Google likely sees it as a way to surface products in a format that people are already used to. Plus, it makes sense for the company to try a new e-commerce strategy, especially as it continues to lose ground to companies like Amazon and social media platforms.

AI-generated videos aren't new to Doppl. While the app creates images of a virtual version of yourself wearing different outfits, it can turn these static images and convert them into AI-generated videos. The purpose of this is to give you a better sense of how the outfit would look on you in real life.

The new discovery feed is rolling out to Doppl on iOS and Android in the U.S. for users 18 and above. Although a feed consisting solely of AI-generated content would have seemed strange a year ago, the idea is now gaining traction. OpenAI launched Sora in September, a social media platform of just AI videos, while Meta also has a short-form video feed of AI-generated videos called "Vibes" in the Meta AI app.
