Meta to use AI chat data for targeted advertising
Meta plans to sell targeted ads based on data in your AI chats

Meta has announced a significant expansion of its advertising strategy, revealing plans to use data from user interactions with its AI products to create more targeted ads across Facebook and Instagram. The company will implement this change through an updated privacy policy taking effect December 16, 2025.
This new data collection policy will apply globally, with notable exceptions for users in South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, where stricter privacy regulations prevent such practices. The move represents Meta's latest effort to monetize its AI investments while strengthening its core advertising business.
The social media giant has built its empire on detailed user profiling for hyper-targeted advertising, and AI interactions provide an exceptionally rich data source. With over one billion people chatting with Meta AI monthly, these conversations offer intimate insights into user interests, preferences, and behaviors that were previously unavailable.
The scope of this data collection extends far beyond simple chatbot conversations. Meta's new policy encompasses all AI offerings, including interactions with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which capture voice recordings, photos, and videos analyzed through AI. Additionally, data from Meta's AI-video feed called Vibes and its AI image generation tool Imagine will contribute to advertising profiles.
According to Meta's announcement, the targeting system will work intuitively – users discussing hiking with Meta AI might see advertisements for outdoor gear, while those asking about cooking could receive ads for kitchen appliances or food products.
However, Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez clarified that ads will only appear on Facebook and Instagram when users are logged into the same account across all Meta products, ensuring cross-platform data integration.
Notably absent from Meta's announcement is any opt-out mechanism. Users cannot prevent their AI interactions from being used for advertising purposes, raising concerns about digital privacy and user autonomy in an era of increasing AI adoption.
Meta has implemented some privacy safeguards, promising that conversations involving sensitive topics won't trigger targeted ads. These protected categories include religious views, sexual orientation, political beliefs, health information, racial or ethnic background, philosophical beliefs, and trade union membership.
Privacy policy manager Christy Harris revealed during a media briefing that Meta is still developing the technical systems needed to fully implement AI-based advertising. This suggests the company is taking a measured approach to rolling out these capabilities.
This development reflects broader industry trends as tech companies seek sustainable monetization strategies for their AI investments. OpenAI recently introduced e-commerce capabilities in ChatGPT, taking transaction fees from purchases made through the platform. Google has similarly outlined plans to integrate advertisements into its AI-powered search features.
While Meta currently has "no immediate plans" to place advertisements directly within its AI products, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously hinted that such integration may be inevitable as the company seeks to generate revenue from its substantial AI investments.
This policy change serves as another reminder that "free" products from major technology companies often come with hidden costs. Users effectively pay through their personal data, which becomes increasingly valuable as AI systems become more sophisticated at analyzing and interpreting human behavior and preferences.
The announcement highlights the growing intersection between artificial intelligence and digital advertising, potentially setting a precedent for how other tech giants might monetize their AI offerings while raising important questions about privacy, consent, and the true cost of AI-powered services in the digital age.
Honestly, would you actually use something like this?

Google expands AI coding agent Jules with CLI and API.
Google’s Jules enters developers’ toolchains as AI coding agent competition heats up

Google is expanding its AI coding agent Jules with a new command-line interface and public API, allowing deeper integration into developer workflows including terminals, CI/CD systems, and Slack. Jules Tools reduces context switching by bringing the agent directly into developers' terminals, eliminating the need to switch between web interfaces and GitHub. Unlike the more interactive Gemini CLI, Jules is designed for scoped tasks and executes independently after user approval. Google has also made Jules' API public for better workflow integration and is exploring support for other version control systems beyond GitHub. The tool offers structured pricing tiers starting with a free plan.

OpenAI ropes in Samsung, SK Hynix to source memory chips for Stargate

OpenAI partners with Samsung and SK Hynix for Stargate memory chips.
OpenAI continues its aggressive expansion in AI compute capacity by securing partnerships with two of the world's largest memory chip manufacturers. The ChatGPT maker announced Wednesday that it has signed agreements with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to produce DRAM wafers for the ambitious Stargate AI infrastructure project and establish data centers in South Korea.
The partnership was formalized through letters of intent signed following a high-level meeting in Seoul. The gathering included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee, and SK Chairman Chey Tae-won.
Under the new agreements, Samsung and SK Hynix will significantly scale their manufacturing operations to produce up to 900,000 high-bandwidth DRAM memory chips monthly. This production capacity would more than double the current industry capacity for high-bandwidth memory chips, according to SK Group's statement.
The collaboration supports Stargate, a massive $500 billion infrastructure initiative led by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank aimed at building AI-dedicated data centers across the United States. This partnership represents the latest in a series of major investments OpenAI has secured to expand its computing capabilities.
Recent weeks have seen a flurry of activity around OpenAI's infrastructure expansion. Nvidia announced a potential $100 billion investment providing access to over 10 gigawatts of compute capacity, while Oracle agreed to a $300 billion compute capacity deal over five years. OpenAI also plans to develop five data centers with SoftBank and Oracle, targeting 7 gigawatts of total compute capacity.
Beyond memory chip production, OpenAI is collaborating with Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT to explore data center opportunities outside Seoul. The company has also partnered with SK Telecom for additional data center development and signed agreements with Samsung subsidiaries for further expansion in the country. As part of the deal, both Samsung and SK Group will integrate ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI APIs into their operations.
