Meta says AI content made up less than 1% of election-related misinformation on its apps

Meta has revealed that generative AI played a surprisingly minor role in election-related misinformation across its platforms during 2024's major global elections. Despite widespread concerns at the start of the year, the impact of technology on electoral discourse on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads proved minimal.

Platform Security and Prevention Measures

The company's analysis covers major elections across multiple countries, including the United States, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, and several European nations. According to Meta's findings, AI-generated content represented less than 1% of all fact-checked misinformation related to elections, politics, and social issues.

Meta implemented proactive measures to prevent misuse of its AI tools. Its Imagine AI image generator rejected 590,000 requests to create images of major political figures, including President-elect Trump, Vice President-elect Vance, Vice President Harris, Governor Walz, and President Biden in the month leading up to election day, effectively preventing the creation of election-related deepfakes.

The company's approach to combating coordinated disinformation networks proved effective, even against those using AI tools. Meta found that these networks made only minimal gains in productivity and content generation through AI use. The platform's focus on behavioral patterns rather than content allowed it to maintain effective enforcement against covert influence campaigns.

Counter-Measures and Industry Context

Meta successfully disrupted approximately 20 new covert influence operations globally aimed at preventing foreign interference. Most of these networks failed to build authentic audiences, often relying on fake engagement metrics to appear more influential than they were.

The company noted that while AI-generated misinformation was limited on its platforms, other social media sites faced greater challenges. Meta specifically pointed to X and Telegram as platforms where false videos about the U.S. election linked to Russian-based influence operations were frequently posted.

Looking ahead, Meta plans to continue monitoring and adjusting its policies based on evolving threats. The company's success in limiting AI-generated election misinformation suggests that existing content moderation frameworks can effectively address new technological challenges when properly implemented.

This revelation comes at a crucial time as social media platforms face increasing scrutiny over their role in protecting democratic processes. Meta's experience suggests that while AI presents new challenges for content moderation, traditional safeguards, and behavioral analysis remain effective tools for maintaining platform integrity.

The findings also highlight the importance of proactive measures in preventing misuse of AI tools. By rejecting potentially problematic image generation requests and focusing on behavioral patterns rather than content analysis, Meta demonstrated that platforms can effectively manage AI-related risks without compromising user experience.

As the technology continues to evolve, Meta's approach to handling AI-generated content during elections could serve as a model for other platforms. The company's focus on prevention and behavioral analysis, rather than solely content moderation, offers valuable insights for the broader social media industry.

These results suggest that while concerns about AI's impact on election integrity are valid, well-implemented security measures can effectively mitigate these risks. As social platforms continue to develop their approach to AI-generated content, Meta's experience provides important lessons for balancing innovation with security.

Google’s video generator comes to more customers

Google is expanding access to Veo, its AI video generation model, to Google Cloud customers through the Vertex AI platform. The model can create 720p videos up to six seconds long in different visual styles, with capabilities including VFX and masked editing. While competitive with models from OpenAI, Adobe, and others, Veo still faces challenges with object consistency and physics. Google hasn't disclosed its specific training data sources beyond mentioning possible YouTube content use and includes prompt filters and SynthID watermarking to address risks. The cautious rollout, with customers like Quora and Mondelez gaining early access, reflects concerns about AI's impact on creative industries.

‘Surreal Elderhood’ using OpenAI’s text-to-video model, Sora

Professional photographer Eugenio Marongiu, an alpha tester for OpenAI's Sora text-to-video model, has created a project called "Surreal Elderhood" through his Katsukokoiso.AI initiative. While acknowledging the model can be challenging to work with and remains controversial, Marongiu found that Sora accelerated his creative process compared to traditional image-based animation. The project took about two days to complete, with most time spent on conceptualization, testing, and editing rather than the actual video generation.

Samsara Launches AI Suite to Transform Physical Operations

Samsara, the pioneer of Connected Operations Cloud, has unveiled Samsara Intelligence, an ambitious AI initiative designed to revolutionize how physical operations are managed. Drawing from what it calls the world's largest Connected Operations dataset - processing over 70 billion driven miles, 265 million digitized workflows, and 10 trillion data points annually - this new suite aims to bring AI innovation to the frontlines of industry.

At the heart of this launch are two key offerings: Samsara Assistant, a generative AI tool providing instant operational insights, and Intelligent Experiences, which embeds AI-driven recommendations throughout the platform. The Assistant can handle complex queries ranging from vehicle fault diagnostics to driver safety scores, while Intelligent Experiences brings visual intelligence and automated training capabilities to everyday operations.

"Samsara Intelligence combines AI with an unprecedented scale of data and brings it to the people who do the hard jobs that power the world," explains Kiren Sekar, Chief Product Officer. This focus on practical application is already gaining traction - according to their State of Connected Operations Report, over half of industry leaders are currently using AI, with 87% planning to increase investments next year.

Early adopters like Performance Food Group, the second-largest food distributor in the U.S., are already seeing benefits. Thomas Olitsky, their Vice President of Safety, notes that the Assistant "can enhance the productivity of the management team by enabling them to find answers and resources quickly and effortlessly."

The platform's Visual Intelligence feature can identify safety hazards from job site photos or measure trailer storage capacity from images, while its AI Course Builder can transform policy documents into training modules automatically. These tools are designed to be customizable, allowing organizations to fine-tune AI model sensitivity to their specific needs.

Currently available in beta to North American customers, Samsara Intelligence represents a significant step forward in bringing AI capabilities to physical operations, promising to make the complex work of keeping the global economy running both smarter and more efficient.
