⚡︎🔋Meta is launching "AI Studio"

And more: SoftBank forms AI healthcare JV

Good morning, aspiring leaders of the next-gen! ☀️

🚀 Here’s what’s going on today in the AI space…

Axelera, an AI chip startup, recently secured significant investment amid growing demand for AI chips driven by the generative AI boom. With a focus on AI chips for edge devices, Axelera's technology supports applications in security, retail, automotive, and robotics. The company, leveraging unique AI hardware that includes the RISC-V ISA and in-memory computing, announced a $68 million Series B funding round, bringing its total funding to $120 million. This funding will help expand into new markets and further develop its flagship Metis AI platform.

SoftBank Group and Tempus have formed a joint venture, SB Tempus, in Japan to develop AI-driven personalized medical services, initially focusing on oncology. SoftBank and Tempus each hold a 50% stake, with SoftBank investing about $188 million. SB Tempus plans to start by collecting and analyzing genetic data from Japanese patients to enhance medical treatments and expand into other areas like neuropsychology and cardiology. The venture aims to make genomic testing more accessible in Japan, enhancing personalized treatment options.

Meta is launching "AI Studio," allowing Instagram creators to develop AI versions of themselves to interact with their audience via direct messages. These AI bots, still in limited beta testing, will display a stars icon and disclaimers in chats to indicate their artificial nature. The feature aims to handle repetitive queries for creators, but raises questions about the authenticity of social interactions. The broader impact on social media's genuine engagement remains debatable as Meta explores this AI-driven approach.

Can chatbots replace human therapists? Some believe they can. A study found 80% of people using ChatGPT for mental health advice see it as a good alternative to therapy. However, the human connection in traditional therapy remains crucial.

Enter Sonia, an AI therapist developed by Dustin Klebe, Lukas Wolf, and Chris Aeberli. Available via an iOS app, Sonia uses generative AI to conduct therapy sessions, charging $20 per month or $200 per year. The app offers homework and visualizations to help users manage issues like depression, stress, anxiety, and sleep problems.

While Sonia has not received FDA approval, it uses advanced algorithms to detect emergency situations and direct users to hotlines. Despite none of the founders having a psychology background, they consult psychologists and are hiring a full-time clinical psychologist.

With around 8,000 users and $3.35 million in funding from investors, including Y Combinator and Moonfire, Sonia is expanding its reach. Reviews on the App Store are positive, with users finding it easier to talk to the chatbot than a human therapist.

However, concerns remain about the chatbot's ability to handle complex issues and cultural nuances, and the founders emphasize that Sonia is not a replacement for human therapists. Instead, it aims to fill the gap for those unable or unwilling to access traditional therapy.
