Meta deploys AI to detect underage users through physical analysis

Meta will use AI to analyze height and bone structure to identify if users are underage

Meta has announced a new AI-powered system that will analyze users' physical characteristics, including height and bone structure, to identify children under 13 who shouldn't be on Facebook and Instagram. The technology represents a significant escalation in the company's efforts to address underage usage on its platforms.

The social media giant emphasized that this isn't facial recognition technology. Instead, the AI examines general visual patterns and physical cues to estimate users' ages without identifying specific individuals. Meta combines these visual insights with analysis of text content and user interactions to significantly boost its ability to detect and remove underage accounts.

Currently operational in select countries, the visual analysis system is part of Meta's broader plan for global implementation. The company is working toward expanding this technology across more regions in the coming months.

Beyond physical analysis, Meta's comprehensive approach includes scanning entire user profiles for contextual age indicators. The system searches for clues like birthday celebrations, school grade mentions, and age-related references across posts, comments, biographical information, and captions. The company plans to integrate this technology into additional platform features, including Instagram Live streams and Facebook Groups.

When the system flags a potentially underage user, Meta automatically deactivates their account. Users must then complete an age verification process to prove they meet the minimum age requirement or face permanent account deletion.

This announcement follows significant legal pressure on the company. Just weeks ago, a New Mexico jury ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties for misleading consumers about platform safety and endangering children. The court also mandated fundamental platform changes. In response, Meta has threatened to shut down its social media services in New Mexico entirely.

The New Mexico case represents just one of numerous child safety lawsuits targeting Meta and other major technology companies. These legal challenges have intensified pressure on social media platforms to implement stronger protections for young users.

Alongside the age detection announcement, Meta revealed expansion plans for its "Teen Accounts" system on Instagram. This technology automatically places teenage users into more restrictive account settings with enhanced safety features. Teen accounts limit direct messages to people users follow or are already connected with, hide potentially harmful comments, and default to private visibility settings.

The Teen Accounts system is expanding to 27 European Union countries and Brazil, marking a significant international rollout of these protective measures.

Meta is also bringing Teen Accounts technology to Facebook for the first time, starting with users in the United States. The company plans to extend this system to the United Kingdom and European Union by June, creating a more comprehensive safety network across its platform ecosystem.

These developments reflect the ongoing tension between social media companies and regulators over child safety online. As legal scrutiny intensifies, platforms are deploying increasingly sophisticated technological solutions to address concerns about underage usage and the potential risks young users face on social media.

The implementation of AI-powered physical analysis represents a notable shift in how platforms approach age verification, moving beyond traditional methods to more invasive but potentially more effective detection systems.

OpenAI released GPT-5.5 Instant on Tuesday, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant as ChatGPT's default model. The upgrade reduces hallucinations in sensitive fields like law, medicine, and finance while maintaining low latency.

The model scored 81.2 on the AIME 2025 math test versus 65.4 for its predecessor, and achieved 76 on the MMLU-Pro benchmark compared to 69.2. Enhanced context management allows the model to reference past conversations, files, and Gmail for personalized responses, initially available to Plus and Pro users.

Etsy launches its app within ChatGPT as it continues its AI push

Etsy integrates native app into ChatGPT for natural language shopping.

Etsy announced Tuesday the launch of its native app within ChatGPT, creating a new shopping experience for users to explore over 100 million product listings through natural language conversations.

The integration moves beyond traditional keyword searches, allowing users to describe their needs conversationally. Instead of typing "wooden coffee table" and filtering results, shoppers can now say "Help me find a Mother's Day gift under $100 for my mom who loves gardening." Users simply tag @Etsy in their ChatGPT prompts to access relevant product listings they can browse, compare, and click through to purchase on Etsy's platform.

This marks Etsy's second ChatGPT experiment. The company previously partnered with OpenAI's Instant Checkout integration in September, which allowed direct purchases within the chat interface. However, that initiative ended in March due to low sales volume, prompting Etsy to develop this native app approach instead.

Alongside the ChatGPT launch, Etsy is testing a beta conversational search experience on its own platform focused on gift discovery. This AI-powered assistant acts as a personal shopper, guiding users through preferences to surface relevant products.

The move represents part of Etsy's broader AI strategy, which includes curated discovery collections, seller tools for generating product descriptions, and writing assistants for buyer communication. In 2024, Etsy introduced a "Designed" label to identify AI-generated content, promoting transparency as AI artwork becomes more common on the platform.

The ChatGPT integration follows Etsy's strong Q1 2026 earnings, which exceeded revenue expectations at $631 million. The marketplace saw 6% year-over-year growth in gross merchandise sales and active buyers increased for the first time in two years to 86.6 million, with 5.6 million active sellers.

Etsy joins companies like Angi, SeatGeek, Tubi, and Wix in building native ChatGPT applications, taking advantage of the development capabilities available since October.
