Meta buys AI pendant maker Limitless to boost wearables development.

Meta acquires AI device startup Limitless

title image

Meta has acquired Limitless, an AI startup previously known as Rewind that developed conversation-recording pendant devices. The acquisition marks Meta's continued push into AI-enabled wearables as competition intensifies in the emerging market.

Limitless announced the deal on Friday, revealing that it will discontinue hardware sales and provide customer support for only one more year. The company's $99 AI pendant, which could be worn as a necklace or clipped to clothing, recorded conversations and transformed them into searchable data using artificial intelligence.

Founded by Brett Bejcek and Dan Siroker, the former CEO of Optimizely, Limitless underwent a significant pivot last year to become an AI device manufacturer. The startup originally operated as Rewind, offering software that recorded desktop activity and made it searchable. However, this non-pendant functionality will be phased out following the acquisition.

Existing customers will benefit from the transition, as subscription fees are being eliminated and users moved to an Unlimited Plan temporarily. The company also promised to provide data export options for customers who want to retain their information or allow them to delete it entirely through the app.

The acquisition aligns with Meta's broader vision of delivering "personal superintelligence to everyone" through AI-powered wearables. Meta currently focuses on AR and AI glasses, including its Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, and Meta Ray-Ban Display products. The Limitless team will join Meta's Reality Labs wearables division to accelerate these efforts.

Market pressures appear to have influenced Limitless's decision to sell. The AI hardware space has become increasingly crowded, with major players like OpenAI and Meta developing competing devices. Limitless's pendant competed with similar products, including the poorly-received Friend AI pendant, making it challenging for smaller companies to maintain market share.

"When we started Limitless five years ago, the world was very different," Siroker explained in the announcement. "AI was a pipe dream to many. Hardware startups were considered unfundable, and a business that did both AI and hardware would have been considered ludicrous. But today is different."

The startup had secured substantial backing throughout its journey, raising over $33 million from prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), First Round Capital, and NEA. This funding helped the company develop its innovative recording technology and pivot from software to hardware.

Meta's statement regarding the acquisition was brief but optimistic: "We're excited that Limitless will be joining Meta to help accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables." The tech giant provided no additional details about specific integration plans or how Limitless's technology might enhance existing Meta products.

The acquisition reflects the rapidly evolving AI hardware landscape, where standalone startups face mounting challenges competing against tech giants with vast resources. Rather than continuing to battle for market share independently, Limitless chose to join forces with Meta to pursue its vision of ubiquitous AI assistance through wearable devices.

This deal represents Meta's commitment to expanding beyond traditional social media into next-generation computing platforms, particularly those involving augmented reality and AI integration. By acquiring teams with specialized hardware experience, Meta continues building capabilities needed for its metaverse ambitions.

AI communication startup triples valuation with human-centric approach

Ex-Googler's Yoodli triples valuation to $300M+ with AI built to assist, not replace, people

Yoodli, an AI communication training startup, reached a $300M+ valuation following a $40M Series B round. The Seattle-based company, co-founded by ex-Googler Varun Puri and former Apple engineer Esha Joshi, uses AI for simulated role-plays to improve speaking skills.

Unlike typical automation tools, Yoodli positions itself as human-assistive, helping with sales calls, interviews, and coaching. Major clients include Google, Snowflake, and Databricks. The platform supports multiple languages and integrates with various large language models, focusing on enterprise training rather than replacing human coaches.

AWS needs you to believe in AI agents

AWS launches AI agent tools while fighting to catch up

Amazon Web Services made a bold statement at re:Invent 2025, unveiling a comprehensive suite of AI agent tools as the cloud computing giant attempts to close the gap with industry leaders in artificial intelligence. The announcement represents AWS's latest effort to prove it can compete beyond its traditional infrastructure strengths.

The company is placing a significant bet on enterprise AI adoption, rolling out its third-generation chip technology alongside attractive database discounts that have generated enthusiasm among developers. These moves signal AWS's commitment to making AI more accessible and affordable for businesses looking to implement intelligent automation solutions.

However, the real challenge lies in demonstrating that AWS can deliver meaningful value in the increasingly competitive AI landscape. While the company has established itself as a dominant force in cloud infrastructure, the AI agent market requires different capabilities and expertise that extend beyond traditional cloud services.

The timing of these announcements is critical, as businesses across industries are actively evaluating AI solutions and choosing their technology partners. AWS faces stiff competition from established AI leaders who have already gained significant market traction and developer mindshare.

Industry experts are closely watching to see whether Amazon's infrastructure advantages can translate into AI success. The company's vast cloud ecosystem and enterprise relationships provide a solid foundation, but executing on AI innovation requires a different set of competencies.

The broader implications of AWS's AI push extend beyond technology, touching on important questions about return on investment for AI agents and the practical applications businesses can expect. As companies evaluate these new tools, they'll need to weigh the potential benefits against implementation costs and complexity.

For AWS, success in the AI agent space could solidify its position as a comprehensive technology platform, while failure might limit it to being primarily an infrastructure provider in an increasingly AI-driven world.
