First Lady promotes AI robots replacing human teachers in education
Melania Trump wants a robot to homeschool your child
In a surreal White House scene that felt ripped from a science fiction movie, First Lady Melania Trump appeared alongside a humanoid robot from Figure AI at a Wednesday press conference. The duo made their entrance walking down a red carpet before the mechanical companion delivered brief remarks, stating it was "grateful to be part of this historic movement to empower children with technology and education."
The unusual demonstration launched the First Lady's new initiative called "Fostering the Future Together," a global summit bringing together international leaders to explore how educational technology and artificial intelligence can transform children's learning experiences.
During her presentation, Melania Trump painted a vision of education's future that many would find either revolutionary or deeply concerning. She asked attendees to envision "a humanoid educator named Plato" that would serve as the ultimate teacher for children worldwide.
"Access to the classical studies is now instantaneous — literature, science, art, philosophy, mathematics, and history," she explained. "Humanity's entire corpus of information is available in the comfort of your home. Plato will provide a personalized experience, adaptive to the needs of each student. Plato is always patient, and always available."
The First Lady suggested that this robotic replacement for human teachers would help children "develop deeper critical thinking and independent reasoning abilities." Figure AI acknowledged the invitation on their social media, posting they were "honored to be invited to the White House."
While these concepts remain largely futuristic given current technological limitations, the underlying philosophy of automating education and potentially replacing human educators has been gaining momentum in Silicon Valley circles. The Trump administration has actively promoted such technological approaches to learning.
Educational experiments like Alpha School have captured attention over the past year. This private school network uses AI to accelerate children's learning and has received significant media coverage and administrative support.
The current administration has embraced these experimental approaches while simultaneously criticizing traditional public education systems. Education Secretary Linda E. McMahon, who is paradoxically working to dismantle the very department she leads, recently visited an Alpha School campus and praised the educational opportunities it provides.
"Alpha School is reimagining K–12 education by equipping students with practical AI skills and preparing them for a rapidly evolving technology-driven workforce," the administration stated following McMahon's visit.
Wednesday's event highlighted the administration's broader vision for education's future, with the First Lady recognizing the "participation of leading American technology companies, whose engagement reflects the growing role of the private sector in supporting safe and effective educational innovation."
The demonstration occurred simultaneously with the Trump administration's announcement of a new technology council populated by prominent Silicon Valley executives, underscoring the administration's commitment to tech-driven solutions across multiple sectors.
While the spectacle certainly generated headlines, it also raised important questions about the future relationship between technology and human connection in education, leaving many to wonder whether AI-powered robots can truly replace the irreplaceable human elements of teaching, mentorship, and emotional support that traditional educators provide.
🔍 Which AI Dilemma Should We Tackle First?
- ⚠️ 1. Speed vs. Understanding The rapid pace of AI development is outpacing our ability to comprehend or regulate it.
- 🧠 2. Lack of Alignment AI systems don’t necessarily optimize for what’s good for humans—even when they seem to.
- 🏢 3. Power Concentration AI is consolidating power into the hands of a few tech giants and governments.
- 🤖 4. Automation Without Purpose AI is replacing jobs faster than society is creating meaningful alternatives.
- 🛑 5. Loss of Human Agency We risk becoming passive consumers of AI decisions, losing creativity and independent thinking.
The decision is yours
Confusing, jargon-packed, and time-consuming. Or quick, direct, and actually enjoyable.

Campaigners welcome Meta and YouTube's defeat in landmark social media addiction trial
Jury finds Meta and Google built addictive platforms harming children.
Parents and campaign groups are celebrating a groundbreaking legal victory after a Los Angeles jury awarded $6 million to a 20-year-old woman who sued Meta and YouTube over her childhood social media addiction. The landmark case found that Meta, which owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, and Google intentionally built addictive platforms that harmed the young woman's mental health.
The plaintiff, known as Kaley, began using Instagram at age nine and YouTube at six, encountering no age verification barriers. She testified that by age 10, she was experiencing anxiety and depression, later developing body dysmorphia from using Instagram filters that altered her appearance. Her longest single day on Instagram lasted 16 hours.
Jurors awarded $3 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages, determining both companies "acted with malice, oppression, or fraud." Meta will pay 70% of the award, with Google covering the remaining 30%.
Both companies plan to appeal. Meta argued that "teen mental health is profoundly complex and cannot be linked to a single app," while Google claimed YouTube is "a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media site."
The verdict comes amid growing scrutiny of social media's impact on children. Australia has imposed restrictions on children's social media use, while the UK is piloting a potential ban for under-16s. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the status quo "not good enough," emphasizing that change is inevitable.
Kaley's lawyers argued that features like infinite scroll were designed to be addictive, with Meta targeting young users who stay engaged longer. The case represents a potential turning point, with hundreds of similar lawsuits pending and another major trial scheduled for June. Campaign groups hope this verdict will force tech companies to prioritize child safety over profits.
